Get what you can from a reliable source.
Either motor is fine...but I would personally get the S14 blacktop.

The S14 motor will be newer and easier to install into an S14 chassis. It will also be easier to source and install upgrades like FMIC.

If you are just going to autox do you really need an sr?

s14 SR
it rules
blows away s13 sr
and if you prefer s13 feel, take the s14 motor and unplug the vtc

If your budget can afford it go with the s14 sr20.

If you like being an underdog and run against supercharged M3s... ;)
I don't think the SR is the best engine you can get for auto-x

Even with 4.36 gearing, the SR is still too weak down low for autoX.

if you have money, S14 SR of course. its not just the motor thats gonna cost more. everything you want to upgrade later will be slightly higher for S14 SR motors so, like i said. if you have the money to spend now and later, S14 SR would be nice. if not stick with a S13 red/blacktop.

Amen. By the time boost hits you're slowing down.

I wonder how the SR would do with a 4.636 final drive...

dont buy a sr if you gonna autocross, buy a rb20det or rb25det the rb20det is the cheapest one, good torque and good horsepower..
oh did you know you can swap a chevy LS2 engine and tranny in it if you wanna keep it NA almost double the horsepower and torq of a sr20det or rb20det...
keep your choices open , dont rush into it, you'll be sorry if you do.
take your time and do a little more researching on what you can do...
ever thought about keeping the KA and turboing it? for about $1200 you can get 250 whp out of it with only 6lb of boost, this is good compared to a stock s14 blacktop, at 7lb it only makes 230 hp (not whp less for whp), just be patieent and smart about what you get and do alot of research before buying anything, in other words know what you get...

How would a KA-T fair in auto-x? I'm assuming low end power is there....so its a better option?
a KA-T w/ a S15 turbo would be sweet...or even a T25 running like 10 psi
fast spool...especially w/ 2.4L and it'll make like 240 whp on the T25 (i've seen it done)

4.6 gears are good, but it makes 2nd gear too short for most autoX courses, especially if you have a good amount of power.
My friend has the 4.6 gears on his S14 (KA) and it's a big improvement.... his S14 SR should be going in in the next few months.
KA + 4.6 gears + autoX = good!

I REALLY disagree with this.
RB has too much weight. S13/S14 are heavy cars by Auto-X standards. Adding weight is not a good solution...
At least, with the SR, you get a very good weight balance.
Turboing the KA is a nice solution.
Adapting your driving to the SR is even better. Left foot braking, keep yourself high in revolutions, you should do ok.

A supercharger on a ka could possibly be the best thing. It would be a bitch to do and all though since there arent any supercharger kits out there to my knowledge. The hybrid ka engine might be nice, ka24e block with ka24de head. With cams and a full exhaust you will still have a lot of grunt down low and all through the rpm range; cheap as hell to boot.

well I just suggested to keep his options open, the rb weight 100-200 lb. more than the sr so I figured why not let him know. the rb has more power(HP and TQ) in stock form. I just didnt want him to go buy an sr and regret it, cuz right now I am. After researching for about 6 months, now I wish I would of turboed my KA. I would have 250 hp without grossly charging my visa and be in debt for about 4g..
The RB is maybe 100 pounds more, but most of it is in front of the axle... I wouldn't trust a RB for a good Solo II car.

Because MrMephistopheles thought it would be funny, so did I. I happen to be Turk and Muslim and I own a Turbo car, therefore, I am a Terror. ;)
