I own a 97 240sx (automatic) and i was just wondering if automatics are really slow compared to manuals. Would i beat another 240sx that is a manual in a dragrace(Just Stock).

Yes auto's are slower. Tho they are even worse in the twisties than a drag race.

one thing no one ever talks about is the possibility of a manual fucking up shifting all it takes is one bad shift and autos have em...

thats why you practice shifting...You don't go and race right away when u don't know your car...Like, it can still happen by accident...but if u know ur car, and have good coordination without watching...your fine for the most part.
But in almost all cars Auto's have Less Power, Weigh more, and are slower in general, and can take a lot longer to shift.

Auto S14's have balls you know, my S14 can outrun a lot of manual cars, (I think that the last owner of my car changed the gearing or something somehow because my auto S14 seems alot quicker than this guy's at my school). Has anyone ever heard of an auto shift switch?

why are you going to say that a auto is worse in the twisties i beleave that we are about the same in the twisties it all depends if some one is comfortable when takeing a turn at about 50-60 mph and if they know the turn as well.my 97 auto whips on alot of manual cars on the road.

Its not as fun having an Auto as it would be a Manual.
like, to me, the way i see it...Auto is just Transportation.
But a manual...You get to know the car, you know when to shift by the sound...its like your part of the car.

Meh...i dunnno

there is no way an automatic is faster than a manual in any situation. i don't care how many manuals you can beat in your auto. show me 1 race car that's an auto, just one. stop telling yourself that your auto is better than it is. put the same driver in an auto and he'll lap the track probably 3-5 seconds slower. and another thing, i'm pretty sure the 240 auto's are 4 speeds. this whole thing about auto's being as fast as manuals is absolutely ludicrous.

a stock auto vs. stock manual

the manual will win.
but remember the automatic has alot of protential for drag racing, my buddy had a 96 auto with an fmax stage 2 and fully built motor and was pulling crazy times, 12.8-13.0 at only 15psi. man that think was quick. it always had boost.
unlike manuals, when u shift boost is lost. the thing was consistent every run.
plus he would power brake the thing at the line and would luanch unbelievable

Autos are slower, I have driven my 89 which is a SOHC and 5 speed then have driven an altima '93 DOHC auto. that car totally had a lethargic feel. the power just did not appear to be there ect. generaly with an auto at .5 to over 1 full second on your 0-60 times and easily the same in the 1/4 mile....

the only slow part about auto's is the launch. but that can be easily solved with a higher stall torque converter, which allows the engine to rev higher while brake stalling. once this is solved, auto's can whup manual ass. anyone who can shift faster and more precise than a auto is a god.

Of course manuals don't corner any faster, but an automatics exit speed is gona be pathetic. Auto will carry through the corner at like 3k or so and the manual will stay in the powerband throught the turn.

it all depends on the driver. i have an automatic, and it has its advantages & disadvantages. i love racing in traffic(parkway for example), or on a road with lots of turns, cuz most people who aren't real good at stick will be at a disadvantage. of course, when i run into a guy who's a pro at stick, i get my ass kicked. but still, i live in NJ, the most densely populated state incase you didnt know =) so i appreciate not having a stick when im caught in bumper to bumper traffic. but then again, when im street racing on a straight line i would kill for a manual transmission. i do like auto & i support it in auto vs. stick arguments, but let me be honest....if someone offered me a free manual tranny swap, I would take it. but i dont want it that much that i would spend time & money to change my tranny to stick, when i could use that time & money to make my auto faster. just my 2 cents.

Hey guess what? Almost all drag cars (like sub-10 second ones) are automatic.

for drag autos are better. everyone should know that if not know you do. but stock?! ha my 99 sentra sr20de best time was a 15.7 with stripped interior. manuals get mid to low 15's

you can control the power band with a manual and alter that. autos are ecu controlled and shift at the best times deemed for daily driving. autos are never buil;t with intentions of someone racing them. unless you mess with your torque convertor.

autos are better for turbos cause the turbo spools faster and like u said dont lose boost .
but a manual can still over come that with the right kinda driving. i dont know much about turbos as others do so i wont comment as much.

plain and simple like already stated stock vs stock a manual will win hands down

outta turns a manual will win you can downshift and go into lower gears with manual the ecu controls it.

its basic mathmatics

autos are slower............in the cases pointed out in my statement...........but it varies car to car mods to mods.

all in all manuals are more fun! *whiispers*and faster*end whisper*

Tru, if you flip in the back pages of any car magazine, where it has drag coverage...90% of those cars are Automatics.
SCC converted their Drag CRX Project Car into an Auto.
For pure stripped down fast ass drag racing, an auto is better...but for street (my opionion) Manual Dominates...it is more fun
But yeah, it depends on the driver...

*note, not all Manual Draggers suck tho...*dreams about Adam Sitzuwara's (spelling?) NSX...8 fahking seconds...*

I agree auto (or that semi-auto type...manual but its electronic so no cluth pedal) is better (faster shifting) for all out race cars, but their auto tranny isn't the same as an auto tranny that we have in our cars.

I have an auto too. How would you modify the torque converter to increse the power? What other mods can you do on an auto trans to make it faster?

compare 240sx to 240sx, manual will be faster.

Level 10 in Hamburg NJ does both the Valvebody mods and sells the higher stall torque converters for the automatics. Both run 595.00ea and make a completely different car out of the 240sx auto. Also I noted someone made a statement on the 5 speed compaired to the auto 4. Look at the spec's, the gear ratios are different. I have a turbo KA stage III and an automatic with Level 10 mods. I turn consistant high 12's at 15 PSI and my trap times are below 2.0 the lowest being 1.875.
