i just bought a 91 LE hatch and i was going to change the front speaker. when i took off the speaker from the bracket i see this electric thing. does any one know what this is? cause my 89 SE didn't have this.
also, does any one have a 6x9 for the front speakers?

did your speaker grille say active speaker? if so it is probably a stock amp.  also i've fit 6.5"s up there, i heard of someone putting 6x9 but i think there would be too much rattling.

Whoa, mine says active speaker.
What exactly was this, an amplified speaker option?
I was gonna add 6x9's this weekend, will I have to rip the amp out or can I still use it, rather than getting a real amp?

yes its an amp for the stock crap speakers if your gonna put diff speakers eliminate it i doubt it will do anything to aftermarket higher watt speakers.

exactly the amps dont work too well with aftermarket speakers. &nbsp;also, they probably wont work with aftermarket headunits. &nbsp;Bypass them by running wires from the head unit.

I don't know how much power those "stock" amps have but there in my '91 too. I left um in thar and installed Polk Audio 4x6's in the stock location and mounted sum tweets on the plastic piece that covers the mirror mounting spot, above the door panel. (make sense) They sound really good, nice and clear. Both are pushed by the stock amps.

Then I installed sum more 4x6's in the stock location in the rear, they sounded like crap with no amp, so I put 6x9's in the rear deck and got a JVC head unit with 45 watts per channel.

Man, those 6x9's have a lot more bass than I thought they would. I couldn't turn the bass up much 'cause it would make the 4x6's buzz so I put bass blockers on all the speakers except the 6x9's and now I can crank it up! <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>

I have a box with two 10" MTX Cranker's, don't think that they make um anymore, I've had um fer about 10 years and they've been in several diferent trucks and cars that I've owned.... Anyway, I wuz thinkin' bout puttin those in the hatch area but I don't think that I'll need um now.....What the hell am I sayin? Of course I need um, they hit HARD!

Oh, mines a '91 SE Fastback btw.

I didn't by-pass anythang, I just hooked um up to my new Head unit and they work fine.

I used 6X9's up front in my 91' LE FastBack. WAY to much rattling up front. damn it sucks.

Do you think bassblockers and dynamat would help, or owuld 6.5's be better?
It may also be that they were underpowered.

okay, how the hell did you guys get 6x9" in the front doors? &nbsp;I had to shave my 4x6 kappas to get them in there at the correct angle (up toward the center of the cabin instead of firing straight across the floor and having shite acoustics) with a larger 6x9 magnet you guys didn't have issues with the speaker hitting the window glass when it's all the way down??? &nbsp;I'm confused.

i forgot to ask, does the rear spkrs have an apmp too. also so which color wires are negative and which ones are positive?

looks like it's possible to put 6x9. i've already made the spacers. the problem is the way the speaker faces. i think i could make it face the right way but it's kinda hard so i'll do that latter.
what should i get for the rear, 5x7's?

Since we're on the subject about speakers, whats the easiest way to get 6x9's in the stock area in the rear???

i think 6x9's are impossible in the rear stock locations. i put them on my hatch cover. &nbsp; if you look at the stock locations even 5x7s would be a pita but i've heard that its been done. &nbsp; as for solving the rattling with bass blockers/dynamat, there are just too many small pieces up their in the door/console area that are prone to vibration. i would go with a 6.5" component set, you will get much better mid/high then from a 6x9, plus it isnt a bitch to put in and you wont have much rattle.
