Went to get a front clip on saturday, looked at a bunch, and then found the best looking stock looking clip, and woohoo the motor knocks loud as can be. This was the only motor that i didnt try to start and God knows i am regretting it :smash: Remember guys, looks can be deceiving!.. I got it from Noyanusa, their selection was really shitty this time around however everyone there was nice, Im replacing it on friday, wish me luck.

Japan ran out of good Redtops and Blacktops so we are getting all the shitty ones here in the states......becareful. Always start them yourself, bring a fuel pump and some gasoline.

do you actually need to physically start the motor?? isnt a compression test just as good and alot easier?
does Noyan sell short blocks? i'm preparing myself for the worst when the helicoil dosent take and i end up blowing up my motor w/ metal shavings in the block lol...well not lol but whatever

Well, like Mike said, there is a knock in the motor. the motor might have perfectly fine compression, but still be bad. bad timing chanin, stickig lifters, and other things can be easily discovered by starting it, but not by just turning it over for the compression.

Exactly what Blu808 said. I remember a time like 3-4 years ago when the S13 Redtops and Blacktops were selling for $1400 shipped complete (Motorset). Those motors were cherry, clean most ran good, now and days the stuff I've been seeing has been straight garbage. I mean it's like all the good pickles in the barrell are eaten, now we have the fucked up soggy ones on the bottom.
For instance, I went to Georgeous Garage in Milpitas and asked if they had a redtop/blacktop S13 motor in stock. They showed me one that they were selling for $2400, I mean this was a real piece. (No offense to GG) The throttle body was glued shut, which means there is moisture buildup on the inside of the motor, shit was rusted to all getout. I mean, we are just gettin garbage here in the states now.

spoon fed: they said they get a bunch more in 2 weeks... so you should def. wait cuz those ones are really shitty, like on one the compression was 150,100,150,150, on another the spark plug threads on t he hole are stripped
its really gone downhill...

Maybe this is a sign to the end of the 240SX/Silvia scene.

Try ctune racing for all you so cal folks. Got my motor from there, and started it up without a hitch! Great prices too. Sam stands behinds his motors. If anything happens they will take care of you. Btw, they sponsor charlie (formula d driver). Good customer service.
P.S. Not trying to advertise or anything, I just keep going back to buy parts because they keep hooking me up. Better prices than jspec and phase2 for everything I buy.

Well guys Im going back friday this is what im going to do to check every clip:
Startup test
Noise test (how does it sound)
Leaking?
Mileage (if any)
Compression
now for compression, i found one motor it ran fine but compression was 150,100,150,150 thats bad right? Ive heard that compression doesn't matter and that it does matter. one motor had 165, 159,155,149 which i thought was good but it used to be an automatic sr and was converted with shitty wiring etc..
In your opinion what is important to look for in compression # results?
sepulchral
02-07-2005, 02:57 PM
Could compression be off from sticky vavles, carbon buildup? I mean i doubt the stock looking motors would have piston ring or headgasket damage so that what leave the valves to blame.
whatyall think?
blu808

Low overall compression is usually a tired worn ring motor, even compression in all but one cyl is usually a blown ring, or bent valve.
no compression in one cyl is usually a hole in the piston, or a dropped valve.
lower compression in one cyl on a motor that has been sitting for a year or soo can also be rust on the rings, or in the cyl :wiggle:
sepulchral

oh so basically low compressoion period even in a motor thats been sitting for a long time is a BAD thing and cant be fixed by running for a long time?>

Ouch man....that sucks. That was one of my biggest things against swapping out my 240 was getting a bad motor.
