Well I'm in the market for a stock stereo, and I'd like to get a stock Nissan one; single din, AMFM radio, CD player. Particularly, I've had my eye on S14-240SX/P10-G20 CD players, but I wanna know if owners have had any problems with them. I dont need superb sound quality, just decent (I dont expect Bose level super bass quality from a 95 stereo, just nothing rattly or staticky).

For those of you who own one of these units, do you have any persisting problems regarding them? Do they play all burned CDs? Do they skip CDs? Anything else?

Thanks.

I'm currently running on the stock 95 and it sucks!!!! Skips on clean new cds, rarely plays burned cds, and is rather sketchy on receiving signals (sometimes I can tune into the Orlando station 101.9, other times I can barely get a local signal [Jacksonville]). However, mine may be the exception for poor quality stock units.

Yeah I'll second that about the stock s14 unit. I think maybe the laser needs to be cleaned but I'll have to check afterwards.

My plays burned discs fince, just sometimes it doesnt accept the disc. Gets all pissy, i think it cant spin the cd or something, makes a weird noise. Usually reinserting it, does the trick.

A good quality aftermarket player can be had for less than eighty bucks. why not get one of those?

The simple fact is, with a 1995 model Cd player, you're going to get skip, backtracking, and distortion with the stock speakers, that's just how its going to be. I am running the Hipermaz system, and I don't get that many skips at higher speeds than I do at lower rates. Its just an accomodation you have to live with.

The S14 deck is preamp, so you'll have to add amplifiers. The 98-01 Altima/Frontier CD deck is a better choice, looks better, and plays CD-Rs fine.

from what i remember theres only amps in the SEs? i know cuz i had to run new wires to bypass my amps when i got new speakers and i asked a few people who had base models and they said they didnt have to bypass anything. plus i remember reading something that the SE had a better stereo system than base anyway.

I bought the 97 OEM CD headunit (ebay, $25 New Old Stock) and installed it into my S13 (by using extra harness plugs) and it works great. It's a low level output, so dont expect much w/o an amp. I've heard Clarion made the units...but I cant verify this.

I've never had a problem reading cds or CDR's and I've been using it for about a year now. I'd heard they had problems playing CDR's, but mine has always been perfect. (FYI, the darker blue the bottoms of the CDR's are, the better chance they'll play in older CD players...I always use the Old Verbatim's which were a metallic royal blue on the bottoms....if you can find them.)

I like the unit because its hardly theft bait, and its more respectible than anything else I could get for $25 (not that you'll be able to find this price, but....I did somehow).

You're correct, Clarion makes the OE units. The only piece not made by them was an optional 3disc indash changer, it was an Alpine unit.

Base models equipped with the 6spkr CD system have the amps as well, it's not just an SE standard, and all 97-98 models do not have amplifiers, the base and SE came stock with a cassette deck only, the LE models use a double DIN casette/CD unit, also with built in power.

Russ, the factory head unit I pulled outta my 95, burned, pissed upon and cursed within 6 days of purchasing the car was a panasonic, all of the speakers I did the same thing to were clarion though.

My old headunit was panasonic and the speakers were Clarion. My system sucked, the display would not work and didn't play burned CDs at all. But that's what I expect from a ten year old headunit.

not the best name, nor deck, but it's 2/3 the price you're talking about for a 10 year old STOCK system....
Plus this one will play MP3s!

if you don't like the color, cruise around the site, etronics is great :)
Get a harness, and maybe an install kit and you're set. (or pay thru the nose for someone else to rip you off on the install)

First off, I just want to say thanks to all who have replied. Your input was very helpful!

I have since bought a single dinn AMFM Radio/CD Player that came off a stock 2000 Nissan Altima. I also ordered the two harnesses necessary to make the adaptation (http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=265-634). It wasnt too hard, just a bunch of color-matching, crimping, and wire-stripping involved.

I matched up all the colors correctly (based on my old headunit's wire matching) and hooked up the new harness. For the most part, it was color to color, but some were different color to color. In the end, however, I have 3 unpaired wires from the new harness: orange, orange stripe, and black stripe.

The two orange wires have respective wires. However, I dont know where the black stripe one goes.

As for the finished (so far) product, the stereo plays CDs, burned and legit, just fine. I'm pretty sure the radio works fine as well, its just that my antennae is broken and I was in an area where I get poor reception from all stations at the time. The only real problem I have is that the stereo doesnt fully light up. The LCD display lights up perfectly, but the white lettering for the presets and such dont light up. As you can imagine, it is hard to see where the controls are. I'm sure this has to do with the leftover wires I have. Oh yeah, my rear speakers also dont work, but this doesnt surprise me, as they were in poor deteriorating condition for a while and I've been meaning to replace them.

I will continue to search to figure this out, but until then, any constructive advice is welcome. Thanks again, guys.
