A worn out key cylinder will accept about anything. It's not just a 240 or a Nissan thing, every car in the world has that issue eventually. On some older GM cars you don't even need a key, just turn the cylinder and start it.

thats why newer cars have the inverted keys where the car key is a little rectangular cube and has an inprint of a key. you will never be able to jack them with "any worn out key".

The ignition was so worn out on my winter beater jeep that you didn't even need a key to start it anymore. Just grab the metal collar that usually surrounds the square end of the key and turn.

Well at the Uhaul I used to work at, some of the trucks didn't even need keys to start. You just turn the ignitiona nd it goes. AND we never locked the trucks because it is easier to move them around the lot. I just let U-haul's big secret. haha oh well f*ck 'em. =]

Think that's scary? My 240 key unlocks my friend's Saturn... It's useful for when he takes me shit though. :rawk:

it's a nissan thing. Like my wife's 240 key could start our friend's car, and my key could unlock his hatch.
It's all about similar keys and worn out lock cylinders.

it's not so bad with older cars where it's an issue of warn out cylinders, however it's kind of sad when my friend can accidentally unlock & start someone elses brand new neon. the only reason she noticed was because the car she got into was a 5spd, she drives an auto

Apperently some manafactures (like nissan im guessing too) use the same keys for varios models.
i also agree that it could be worn down, but it could be the same key too.

Lol... Anything would open my old NX, and for about 3 months I was starting it with a pair of scissors..... People would always see me jiggling scissors around in the ignition and think I was trying to steal it.... lol

The doors on both my 240's suffer from key slut syndrome, but thankfully the ignition won't accept just any old key.... yet!

I worked at a GM dealership, for years, and interestingly enough, some keys would open up to 3 vehicles, given they were the same model and year. I never did find a key that would start more than on new vehicle, but opening them was never a problem.

The reason it happens with new cars is because there is only a finite number of combinations you can fit onto a key. When a manufacturer sells 3 million cars a year, your going to have to start duplicating them after a while. However, the chances that you will run into another car with the exact same key is very slim.

Try this (http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/01/29/0233218&tid=172).

And you might be able to get it to fire.

I tried my friends '93 Altima key on my '91 240. If you tilt the key just right, you can get the drivers door and ignition to turn. The trumk won't unlock. Lucky for me she can't drive a standard.

Hmm...I gotta chime in here.

In my family there is a 2001 Frontier,1997 Max SE,1993 Max SE and 1991 Nissan 240sx FB.

I've tried all the different keys in all the different nissans, with no avail....And I've even tried my s13 and '97 Max on a couple of s13s around my freinds college campus just for the hell of it.....with no avail I might add.

I had to replace the door handel on my girlfreinds Jetta and the new handels key worked just fine with the other three doors. How odd is that
