I think my synchros suck

A lot of time when I shift into third it grinds like you wouldn't believe. It's mostly when I shift from 5th down to 3rd, but also happens a lot when i'm trying to shift quickly from 2nd to 3rd. It didn't use to be this bad, it would only happen every now and then; I thought it was just me not putting the clutch down fast enough. But now, when I shift from 5th to 3rd, and trust me the clutch pedel is completely depressed, It grinds every time. And it doesn't matter how slowly I try to shift, it grinds a bit then goes into gear. It also does it sometimes going into 5th, but not as bad. I have no problem at all with grinding if I put it in 4th then straight into 3rd or 5th without releasing the clutch. So, what's up with my transmission? <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'> I think it could be my synchros but I'm not sure. Please help!

mine does this too, at least from the 2-3 shift. also when i start driving the car in the morning it's a little stiff shifting to any gear, <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':huh:'> &nbsp;but goes away after 15 minutes or so.

first off, make sure your transmission oil is full. although i think 5th and reverse are the two gears on the top, so if low oil was the problem it would be those two that would grind. but otherwise yeah, i'd say synchros. i've had synchros go out on 2 different cars.

I just had the transmission fluid changed about 15k mile ago. But I'll check it any way. If it is the synchros, thats a major operation isn't it? Have to pull tranny? it's a fairly decent operation, when i had 2nd replaced in my old eclipse gsx it was expensive, like 600 er somethin, i've heard they are a pain to work on. nissan transmissions aren't as bad, i think somebody told me 2-300 to replace synchros. don't quote me on this though, it was multiple years ago.

Sounds to me like a bad synchro... &nbsp;Does it seem to like shifting into that gear when the rpm's are lower? &nbsp;Lower rpm's should help out if a synchro is bad, but there should also be a sweet spot where it shifts in the best (depending on speed, etc). &nbsp;If that describes what it does, and the other things mentioned are fine, almost certainly a bad synchro, I think.
