this might belong in tech but i think we couldchat it up a bit for a while. okay i did a lot of searching for this and nobody seemed to have any pics so here is a visual example of the IAV stuff and carbon canister i removed today.

if you have an SOHC rip this crap out and plug the holes that they leave: DONE.

I ditched my fan too so here are some shots of my engine bay.

Great, you'll be lucky if you gained 1hp. If you're big on weight loss, then loose some weight. :fawk:

Thanks for killing our air.

Since you are doing this for education's sake, the valve you removed is not the EGR, its the AIV system... completely different.

But good job simplifying your engine ;)

Ugh, I need to get rid of my carbon canister too. Makoto can you do some close up shots where the can was and what you did with the lines.

Well if you’re an SR20DET owner on a budget, this site should be helpful in gaining that extra little horsepower. http://www.royalpurple.com/dragsport1/ds1p1.html

yeah i just figured it was EGR cause that's how it's set up on my ranger sorta. whateva, the shizzle is gone.

oh and fug emissions. A- i don't care B- its a bunch of political crap C- i don't drive the car ennough to warrant the junk.

cali240sxdrifter- you just unbolt it, yank it out, and plug up the holes. its really that simple. just make sure you doont yank the little hose (the one that goes over the fan shroud) off of the brass fitting or else its a PITA to plug up the hole. just cut it and plugg up the tube.

If you're big on weight loss, then loose some weight.

i'm 6'2" 190lbs... if i lost weight i'd die.

Ha, you're doing the exact opposite of what I'm currently doing.

I removed my EGR and AIV a while back but I'm putting them back on since we'll be having emissions next year and so I can run STS in autox.

EGR never made a diff. so I'm hooking that back up. AIV made a huge diff. on my car so it's going back on for looks but won't be hooked up until emissions time.

I would just glue them back on for looks.

People, this same shit applies to twincam too, and for the ones of you worried about passing inspection, go somewhere that you KNOW the person that will be inspecting your car personally, like I will be

If you just plug the holes to the carbon canister the fuel tank can implode/collapse. I heard this is what happens if you do it wrong. What is the right way to do it?

Thats nothing...

I just loaded up my old parts that were in my garage into the WRX to throw away. List included is... Power Steering, HICAS, AC, Rear Seatbelts, AIV & EGT. Pointless crap. :)

yeah, i guess restoring a car to its former glory after 15 years of being abused is really nothing to be proud of.

i'll just go live under rocks with all the other people that put stuff that matters before SR swaps and JDM tyteness.

Makoto, don't be such a loser. Get an SR20DET and put a drifting sticker on your car. God, look at your wheels. You call that flush? What a poser.

did you "feel" any difference with the AIV and canister out? my car is still on jacks from my alternator install so i''m thinking about this.

If you "feel" a difference after doing this, it's from the crack you smoked before hand.

i'm 6'2" 190lbs... if i lost weight i'd die.

I'm 6'4" and 170.... I'm pretty sure you have a ways to go before you die :p

oh by die i meant "be scrawny". i basically ripped it all out cause i want my bay to look cleaner and i like to have space in the engine compartment. these crappy yokohama tires spin halfway through first anyhow so traction is killin me right now.

oh but i do have mad throttle response now.

yeah if you cap the wrong lines your gas tank won't vent anymore and everytime you open it to fuel up will hiss, I guess with too much you'd cause it to implode.

when i get this:

http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/sum-890101.jpg

and some wire it'll go in back. you can see on my site where its gonna go.

you guys really think my gas tank is gonna blow up?

eh, whateva.

wootwoot
01-31-2005, 03:16 PM
keep in mind how how much all that extra wire and the box is going to weigh. It will end up being the same weight with better distribution but still. Get that batery on PDM racing that weights 13 pounds and keep it in the front. SOHC'S ARE FOR NERDS!

My S14 does that sock.
my s13 did too but it was only a real quick vacuum noise. when I had the wrong things capped it seriously would suck for like 10 seconds when you opened the gas cap as you unscrewed it.

so which ones do you cap? the one that runs up to the fire wall or the big one on the frame under the canister?

without the fan cover the fan has to pull air from the entire engine bay losing velocity and not cooling as well as it would with the cover because with the cover it would only pull air through where you need it to...

nismo2491
01-31-2005, 08:17 PM
as for which ones to cap I don't know I just know its something I have to fix, I have to look at my shop manual when i get to that point in my project (cars not going anywhere so...)

as for the fan shroud its fine if you're running like a flexalite fan thats got basically its own shroud, butted up against the radiator, he shouldn't have any cooling issues with that, especially with only bolt ons on SOHC.

what part of all of them is unclear? idunno if the frame rail one does anything but since it appears to be a mere duct to route gases through the frame rail to the back of the car i left it alone.

89 hatch sr'd, bigger snail, tein he's, volks...ect get yo drft on

you have a sig option... fuggin use it and ditch the cliche bullcrap.

yeah, the fan shroud is goin back on once i'm confident my coolant lines are all good again (hadda replace one yesterday). its cold right now so i'm not too worried about it.

The fan cover is a joke. It is crazy how much flow it blocks. You only need it when you're stoped.

Most aftermarket fans have there own shrouds.

the part where you don't cap all of them was the unclear one for me. there's 1 or 2 that you aren't supposed to cap because it relieves vacuum pressure in the gas tank.
