I get only about 15 miles per gallon. Msn Carpoint says I should be getting atleast 21mpg. That means I'm loosing atleast 6 miles for every galon! What could be the problem?

http://carpoint.msn.com/Vip/Engines/Nissan/240SX/1992.asp

I know I gotta get my fuel filter changed, and that my engine is old (130,000miles). Is there anything else I'm missing out on?

Thanks

I would tell you what kind of gas mileage I'm getting, but can't because my friggin' odometer's broken. I can tell you though, that it isn't good. I smell gasoline in the exhaust fumes.

Not like this helped any, just letting you know you're not the only one getting shit mileage.

Well that sucks, But the good news is that mine was at the same thing, But I took it in and got my O2 sensors cleand and it helped out quite a bit.. I still get crap tho (lead Foot Syndrome)

I was geting 13 per gallon, (lead foot)
I now get 15 per gallon, (lead foot)

If I drive like a normal person its about 19 per gallon.
I hope this helps.

27mpg with mostly highway driving. 187,000 mile SOHC, no leaky injector here.
try fuel injector cleaner.

I get 27mpg usually. If nothing anybody's suggested works, just get your foot out of it. I checked mine at my last track day and it deteriorated to 9.7mpg.

Well, I only drive 10 minutes tops per day cuz I just drive to the BART station (it's a train, Bay Area Rail Transit, or something) to go to school on San Francisco. Trust me, half hour train ride and a couple blocks up from the station is way better than sitting an hour in gridlock, then driving around in a crowded city like SF to find parking, then pay for it. I thought I'd bring that up as a side note in case some folks are wondering why I don't drive to school instead. Hehehe.

Anyway, doing that everyday, I get like, I dunno, 13 or so miles per gallon and my broke ass teggy's supposed to get, what? 22 city? *shrug* I guess I'll replace the fuel filter and pour in some fuel injector cleaner. Then again, I drove around from place to place for an hour and half one day and the trip meter said 48 or 60 miles I forgot, when I got home and my tank was only a half to 3/4 inch empty. I guess it also matters where you drive too. Cuz if you're driving in the highways a lot more than you do in the city streets, you'll get better gas mileage since you're not stopping and going all the time.

i absolutely feel you, i'm gettng like 13mpg... i have a 93 coupe. but, just last week, i decided to figure out the problem, and drove VERY nicely, i got 250mi on the tank which is 17mpg... i really have no clue. i'm gonna try repalcing these:

fuel filter
02 sensor
air filter

maybe in the next month or so

also try:

spark plugs and spark plug wires
changing your oil (helps more than you think) mobil 1 5w-30 is good
make sure your tires arent under-inflated

oh and i get 24 city 33 highway...

Castro makes great oil too. Tested in a 1.6L 4 cylinder Mirage, and I got extra 2 mpg.

33 MPG, beat that

This was on a highway trip from Vegas to Tucson. Changed oil, oil filter, spark plugs and wires just before leaving. Changed air filter the oil change before that.

I averaged 27 on my commute before this work, I'll recalculate it afterwards. Granted, my drive is predominantly highway miles, though I still can't fathom how you can get 13 MPG in an s13

Here is your list of things to check/change (good stuff to do just as a basic tune-up)

Spark plugs/Wires (got me an extra 2mpg)
Oil (I think for your app 5w-30 is a little lite. I would use at least 10w-30 b/c of the miles on your engine)
Distributor/rotor cap
Fuel filter (get a 300zx TT filter)
O2 sensor
Air filter
and dump in a Bottle of Fuel injector cleaner

If that doesn't help,
Clean out you Throttle Body, and make sure your MAF isn't dirty. If these were part of the problem there would be other symptoms such as odd idling problems, etc..

Also make sure you don't have any wetness around your injectors. Not generally a problem on the 91-up 240's but you never know.

I know this thread is OLLDDDD.

But I recently just started paying for my own gas and I have noticed that im getting terrible gas milage. I recently went on a 200 mile drive, all highway. I left with a full tank and got back with a little bit over E when I got back.

Sometimes I have to give it a little gas when I start my car. Even after driving it all day. Would this have anything to do with it? Maybe a loose vacum line somewhere? Where should I start?

I get between 25 and 30, it just depends if I do alot of highway driving or not. If I drive conservatively I can easily get 400 miles on a tank, a little more aggressive gets me down to 360-375.

I was like, WHO THE HELL BROUGHT THIS BACK?!

I got 16 mpg recently, then I said "FUCK THAT" cleaned my air intake filter (AMSOIL) and sprayed some throttle body cleaner into the intake manifold. I am getting about 20 mpg now I think.

Stock KA with intake and exhaust.

When I was NA i got 24ish driving hard with mixed driving.

Turbo:
If I dont screw around on the highway I have got 29mpg with out cruise control, and some WOT to keep me awake, average speed 80-85mph. With my city and some rural driving I normally get 16-17, but I drive it hard and see 15psi often. 75# injectors like to suck down the gas :(

My jeep get 10.5mpg in the winter when I use the autostart.

I changed the spark plug, spark plug wires, disturber cap and rotor, air filter, and a oil change to 10w-30 royal purple and for some odd reason the top half of my tank of gas goes down really really really fast, like unbelievingly fast. I filled up on Wednesday and its Friday and I'm almost down to half with only 60 miles traveled. The funny part is the bottom half of my tank is fine I averaged out to about 160 miles mixed driving. I do have a bad EGR, does it really throw off a tank of gas like that?

i average a combined of 21mpg with 93oct on an auto, relatively stock car with regards to performance parts.

I bought the car last january and between then and now have replaced the plugs, wires, air filter (oem), use synthetic oil, new tranny fluid, new diff fluid, new distbutor and cap, Z32TT fuel filter, and I may have replaced the o2.

i drive fairly normal, hard at times steady at times.

24-27mpg. NA KA @ ~65mph on average and that's with a leaking egr, bad O2 and cell showing on mostly freeway driving. 15mpg!? LOL
