All rite, I know we're supposed to tawk about cars and stuff but this is kinda related.
As I was reading the "Employment" topic I noticed that a lot of you are in computer tech related jobs so I thought that I'd see if anyone might be able to help me. I was gonna scan some pics of my car to post on my web page (see the relationship) and the scanner won't work. I've also notice that my web cam no longer functions and my Logitech keyboard won't load properly on start-up. All of which either connect to my USB ports or have USB ports in them (keyboard). So, I think that my 'puter won't recognize my USB ports anymore. The thang crashed last summer and I had to git the hard drive formated and reload everythang, I haven't worried about it until now 'cause I didn't need to use the scanner. I tried to re-load the drivers but that didn't help so I'm wondering....is there a driver or sumpthin that I need to re-load or install so that the 'puter will recognize the USB ports?
Any help will be appreciated! <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>

what mobo do you have?...what operating system are you running?
i think u either have hardware failure (ur mobo) or have a worm on ur system.
[edit] to check for a worm, look at ur startup files in ur registry, and in ur system config util. if u see any foreign progs (u prolly will) and one seems to be a dnetc or some other type of web proggie, or if u have a "notepad" type thing starting up, u prolly have a worm.

Yeah, 240sxnewbie is probably on the right track. Either that, or it could be the processor itself. But what motherboard do you have, what processor, and what operating system?

If you're computer crashed, they could've either reloaded it and not put the right O/S (Win95 v. A and B don't do USB) or they could have not even loaded the ports in.
Go to My Computer, right click.
Properties,
Device Manager Tab,
Scroll Down To USB and you should see your ports there.

I would say flash the bios of the mobo and then check to see if the system is set to plug and play for starters

AHAHAHA!!! you guys know jack about computers...twofortysx was the closet to coming to the solution...you do go into your device manager...if your scanner is plugged in...it should show a yellow exclamation point...depending on the error code, usually 10 or 17, there are different solutions which also vary between different os'...if you are getting a code 10, you are probably connected to a usb hub...if you are running xp, the easiest way to solve this is to connect the device directly to the port on your mobo...this method also, works with 2K, but you would have to install the software before you plug in the device...a code 17 could mean a lot of different things according to which os you are running...i won't explain it...but if i'm still awake and you post the error code and os you are running, then i'll help you out...or you can hit me up using AIM...ya heard!
also, your rig crashing last summer has as much relevance as the fast and the furious, talking about dropping an sr20 into a honda...blah!

Dang, I knew that you computer geeks (no offense) would jump all over this but I didn't think that you'd jump all over me for forgetting to tell ya that I'm running ME. That's why I posted the question. I know a lot about cars, but little about computers. Been tweekin' on cars fer about 19 of my 32 years but only been messin with computers fer about 5 so gime a break.
I went to Device Manager and saw no USB and no scanner. The only ports listed were COM1, COM2 and LTP1. There is an Unknown device listed under Other devices with a yellow exclamation point. I clicked properties on that and tried to locate a driver but Windows couldn't fine one and I don't know what it is either.
I use Norton Antivirus and update it regularly so I don't think that I have a virus, but anythangs possible.
Y'all have to remember....I know cars, not computers so you must speak in a language that I can understand. Take for instance "mobo" I'm guessing that means "mother board" which is kinda like the engine block, rite?!? <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/huh.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''>
I went to my friends house and scanned sum pics of my car. Posted them on my web page too. But I still want to git this thang fixed.

I'm sorry sir, but I will need to refer you to the manufacturer of that scanner, as it is a third party product <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'>
Let me break it down for you. You're running ME. Never run ME <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hehe.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':hehe:'> If only I was joking. Seriously, I would look into wiping the HD and installing a more stable OS. If you don't want to do that, your next problem is the fact that you have no USB devices listed in Device Manager. Make sure you are looking in the right place (they should be toward the bottom in Device Manager listed in their own group, not listed under Ports). If there are indeed none, first check your BIOS to make sure USB is turned on. Second, download your chipset drivers (or USB drivers if they are seperate) for the motherboard and install them, or extract them to a folder you will remember. Go into Device Manager, make sure the Unknown Device is gone, if not, remove it and reboot. When it asks for the drivers, point it to the folder where it extracted the chipset drivers.
Also, remember once you get the USB ports working, the correct way to install a USB device is almost ALWAYS to install the software BEFORE you connect the device to the computer, and once the software is installed, THEN you can connect it.

Not knowing anything else about his system, I will bet that the "unknown device" is his USB port(s).
1) Go back to the Device Manager and find the "unknown device"
2) Click the device, click remove.
3) Reboot.
4) When the system comes back up, it SHOULD prompt you that it has found a new device. It should also prompt you to locate the system drivers.
5) Again, not knowing anything about your system...
I will judge by your comments that you are LIKELY running a prebuilt system such as a Compaq, HP or other compatible. A lot of times these systems will have all the drivers on the hard drive. The first place you should try to point windows to is c:\windows\options\cabs and see if it finds the file it's looking for. If not, try to locate either: A) Your system restore disk (If you are in fact running a compatible system like I mentioned), or B) Your motherboard cd. Search either/both Cd(s) for some type of directory called drivers or something similar and see if it's there.
If that still doesn't get you running, give me more info on your computer and I will try to get the info to you.
- Matt

Nathan: Never run ME, huh? Ok! Yep, I was lookin in the rite place, No USB. Allrite, how do I check the BIOS? Where do I download the chipset drivers and how do I figure out what kind of motherboard I have? The rest of what you said makes sense to me. Remember: me car guy, you computer guy, we no speakum same tounge. <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/hehe.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':hehe:'>
I believe that I did have the stuff connected before I tried to install the software. I'll try and unhook everythang and re-install and see what happens.
Matt:Thanks fer the info. I'll try that too. But not tonight, I got ta git to bed, me tired! <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/dozingoff.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> And yes, it is a prebuilt system. Everex, 800mhz PIII, 128 meg RAM. I think that the motherboard is a Mainboard FA13, but I don't know. I just have a book and CD with that on it that came with the computer. What else do ya need to know?
Dang, I got to go to bed. I'll try this stuff and let y'all know what happens.
Thanx!

All of that is good sound advice before you go jumping into what may be a bigger problem. It may be as simple as removing that conflicting unknown device, and rebooting. If you do have a system recovery disk though, you can try to insert that to look for drivers, or you may be able to prompt windows to look for it online (I'm not sure how ME works). You can actually go to microsoft.com to scan for drivers if you like.
I know my system BIOS does not have the USB on/off function for it, I have a feeling that most current systems will not either, as USB really is starting to take over. But, you are still running ME, so you can check that.
Ok, from personal experience, I know that yes, it can be a bad processor, so don't tell me it can't, Arcane. When I first bought and put together this computer, I received a bad processor, it had all sorts of things wrong with it. It would not detect the mouse or keyboard at startup w/o me unplugging them, plugging them into different ports, and them plugging them back into the right ports again. It would crash the system, freeze in the middle of programs, and cause all sorts of mayhem. The thing fried itself about a month after I had it, so I bought a new one. Well, all of my problems disappeared. The system hasn't crashed but maybe 4 times in 6 months, and those times were my fault.

To get into the BIOS, when it asks you to hit DEL or F8 or whatever when you are rebooting your computer, hit it. It should be a blue screen keeping the time, date, and temperature, and stuff like that. Scroll through it w/ the keyboard arrows.

When you formatted your hd did you install the motherboard chipset software? Nathan is correct (it's my name too), so if not, pop in that cd and install the USB associated software.
DrDubbleB

But if he bought the computer whole, then it should be on the recovery disk that came with it, and should have automatically installed itself.

The FA13 is a FIC motherboard. It does have an option to enable or disable USB connectivity in the BIOS. Hit the delete key upon startup to go into the BIOS. Once there, choose "Chipset Features Setup" and then you should see "OnChip USB". Make sure it is set to Enabled.
Your chipset drivers are located here. (ftp://ftp.fica.com/cd_pro/motherboard/cd_pro_v5_2/PATCH/Via4in1/435/435.zip)
The manual for your motherboard can be found here. (ftp://ftp.fica.com/manuals/motherboards/fa13/)
Hope that helps.

LIke i said..i think he has to update the bios version. I would also check to see if the PnP option is turned on or off. Also, i'd get rid of ME and throw on 2000..then again, he doesn't want to reinstall his operating system.

The "EDIT" in my post was not referring to you. Sometimes, if people edit their post, they will put "EDIT" at the bottom and put what they did. I left out a comma that made my whole blurb confusing, so my "EDIT" was to add a comma, or grammar.
At any rate, don't flash your BIOS. That is the absolute last thing you should try. It can be difficult and if done wrong could cause you many problems. It's likely that your motherboard does have USB enabled and that the conflicting device is your USB. I say this because it used to work before a new O/S install. The O/S install wouldn't change your BIOS settings. Try using the chipset drivers provided by blackout to get that device reinstalled. If that doesn't work, you can assess the problem and any errors you've received then that might point us in the right direction.

once again...twofortysx proves his knowledge...in regards to Windows ME, it's a capable operating system, and adequate enough to support "all (two) <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'>" of the functions that you use...that is of course, when you don't get all the crashes or errors...if you want a better os for the functions that you use your computer for, get Win98...it is probably the most user friendly windows os...but anyways, post the error code you're getting in device manager along with any other errors you're getting...verbatim would be nice...also, take twofortysx's advice and stay away from your bios...if you aren't really comfortable with computers, you may cause irreparable damage to it...however, it usually doesn't cause you many problems if you do it wrong according to what twofortysx said, you usually only get one problem: you're motherboard becomes inoperable...but hey good luck...

you now have my apology...but being that HotRodGuy's only error, is just his scanner (and not any other hardware)...i highly doubt it could be a dead or incompatible processor...usually if the processor is bad, you wouldn't be able to boot up or if you would constantly get a registry access/edit error...but yeah, again, my apologies...

Hey guys, I got it workin again. Thanks! Y'all are gonna think that I'm stupid but.... I bravely went into the bios and sure enough the USB wuz disabled, duh! <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/blush.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=''> So I changed that and it still didn't work so I downloaded the chipset that Nathan (blackout) told me about and now it works.
But that wasn't my only problem, if you remember in my original post I said that my web cam won't work and my Logitech keyboard won't load properly, both of which are USB. I tried to reload those drivers from the disks but still no luck.
Nuthin to worry about, I never use the web cam anyway and the only (extra) buttons on the keyboard that I used were the ones fer the volume. So I ain't worried about it now. I just need to use my scanner and it works now, so that's good.
Look fer pics on my web page since I can scan again! <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'>
