Does any any know, if a custom metal dash is street legal?? Also does anyone know the fine for being caught with lexan windows. The windows Im getting next month are lexan, and the front windshield has the two metal strips going down it to keep it from deforming at highway speeeds. Which is a dead give away for the cops. I serched every where on google, checked DOT and DMV, and I cant find the fine for a lexand windshield, and if an custom aluminum dash is illegal.

-Thanks, Snail

Well im in cali so just about everything is illegal.
With that Dash you should be fine as long as there is a VIN plate.

Lexan Windows are not for street use so watch out against the law!!!

i thought you could have lexan side windows and rear windows, but windshield had to be glass.
the dash should be fine.

but this is CA, so common sense goes out the window.

i was thinking about making a custom dash with autometer gauges and everything. it'd prolly be more trouble than its worth, though, for a street car. i mean, if you wnat things to look perfect.

I stripped the car out a while ago. I drove it for about 3 months with out a dash with out any problems. though I can remember If I got pulled over during that time. The car has been out of comission for over a year, the stock dash+dash vin is long gone, though I would rather sell the car befor I put a stock dash back in it. It was only till tonight that three friends of mine were trying to convince me that a metal dash is not street legal, though I never heard that it was illigal before. I just got back from talking with them , and searched for any laws profibiting a metal dash for street use but did not find anything. The Lexan I understand. I know it is illigal for street use, at least the wind sheild is, but what is the fine?

It's Removing a safety device. You can't remove your Airbag, safety glass or seatbelts. Most states have laws for seat belts but not for Glass. There is no enforcement. But, you will get hit for inhibiting your veiw with the strips.

Legal aside, You know if you get in a crash you're screwed? You'll break your arms/hands on the dash and the Fire dept will have a hard time geting thru the lexan if it hasn't broke and impaled you.

No standard airbag (s13), 4 point harness, and I agree the stock glass is safer. Since Lexan is stronger then glass, upon inpact, your head will not go through lexan, but just break your neck. Though if you get into a wreck to the point your head goes through the glass. then you might aswell be dead. The other thing is, If you manage to survive the impact of your head going through Lexan, It does not shater, but it creates flexible spikes that only go one way, you try to pull your head back out, and those spikes will stab into your neck. I still dont understand how they can place a fine on risking your own life. Does any one know how big that fine is?

Thanks, Snail

The most important ting about safty glass is the rescue aspect. If you flip your car, or someone t-bones you, what-ever, and the doors won't open, but the car is on fire, etc, saftey glass is very easy to break with a sprung punch that rescue workers use. Lexan won't break with it, and they probably won't be able to get you out. I just don't see the good of lexan for a street car out weighing the bad.

glass isn't THAT heavy guys. you're tryin to shave maybe 20 lbs in exchange for increasing risk of death like 1000%?

that's stupid. like removing your AC below the mason dixie line.... RETARDED.

HAHA. Is it really illegal? that’s retarded, lol. The dash is mandatory, but the lexan, I will think about. You guys have some good points, and maybe the lexan is not worth all the negatives it comes with. I’ll have to marinate on the thought for a minute.

TheSnail - I live in Macon, GA ... you can pretty much get away with just about anything in this state. But my suggestion to you: Go to the local DMV and ask them all of your questions or go to the police station that has jurisdiction in your area.

dude, why not go lexan on the side and rear, leave the windshield alone, and as far as the dash, do whatever the fuck you want. if you get pulled, and the cop gets into looking around your car for illegal things, hes gonna see a lot more than just your dash being metal... lol
you have an RB in it dont you. so i'm sure your equipt with a highly illegal exhaust, as well as many other things.

btw, its true...Suicide is illegal, though its not like they can do anything about it once youve committed the crime.

That’s all true, I want to get a balanced weight reduction so I want as much weight off the front as possible, but I know the illegal thing is to have a non-dot windshield, and like Coastek put it, just do every thing but the windshield. I think that’s what I'll do, No sense in dealing with the law over a windshield that weighs 15lbs less.

I think as long as it has a passanger pad on the dash its legal, aslong as its not like pointy or anything and dangerus
