how much for head gasket replacement?

As the title says, what should I expect to pay for a head gasket replacement as well as machine work if I have a warped head? My s14 is overheating and after much research and troubleshooting I narrowed it down to this. Thanks.

I was thinking about dropping in another motor that a friend has but I don't know the history of it. So I don't want to run into any other problems after I get it installed.

$400 isn't too bad with a transmission, I was expecting a bit more. I have a mechanic friend to do the job so i'm expecting he isn't going to charge me shop rates.
