View Full Version : How to tell if your diff is shot?

I think my differential is gone. Anytime I make a hard right turn my car shakes bad from the rear. Also, I can't get a good launch. Everytime I try to launch hard it just shakes. Like yesterday I ran the rpms to 4k and dropped the clutch and my car just shook hard and then started accelerating slowly. Could it be something else? Like a bushing that is bad?

Bad shocks, slipping tires, worn subframe bushings can all cause these types of problems. You really want to know if your diff is bad, try removing it from your car, take the back cover off & inspect it. That's the only way to know for sure. Oh..just so you know....dumping your clutch at 4K is not a good idea...it's bad on the drivetrain...from the clutch/driveshaft/diff/tires & subframe. All that power has to be absorbed somewhere....keeping it up only kills it faster...

Its the stock open diff on a 91. I am wanting to replace it anyway, but I want to make sure that it is the problem and not something else. The tires are brand new with only 2k miles on them (Fuzion ZRi). Yeah, it feels like wheel hop. And the only reason I dumped the clutch at 4k was just to see if I could get any kind of a wheel chirp. Also, whenever I am backing towards the left into a parking spot and it always makes a popping/grinding noise from the rear. Kinda like a loud fart.

It's kinda hard to break a stock open diff unless you run out of fluid.

When was the last time you checked your rear brake pads?? The rear brake pads on the 240 will make a grinding noise as you reverse your 240 when the brake pads are low. Pull the rear wheels and check both inside & outside pad. Chances are the inside pads might be worn.
Anyhow, hope this helps.....
