I got my SSautochrome exhaust today. It shipped the same day I won the auction and I got it exactly one week later. I have to say, really nice welds, full stainless steel, and it came with all the gaskets I needed plus a bunch of extra bolts and a silencer. Exhaust hangers all fit in the stock locations and it bolts right onto your stock cat. They even gave me an extra 3 bolt exhaust gasket which I didn't need. Well on for the pics and the movie of how it sounds. Oh yeah it was 223 shipped!

I've got the S14 version, going on 8 months, can't say anything but good about it. Quality and fit are great and the price can't be touched.

any idea if its simular to teh megan racing exhuast?

90RS13
01-19-2005, 03:55 AM
similar in what way? At least in looks it's nothing close. I have the megan racing cat-back. It exits straight, and the tip sticks out farther. Most people hate how far the tip sticks out but I like it cause I never have to clean the black exhaust crap of my bumper. It's cool that there are two really cheap, quality exhausts available now.

Can someone with this Exhaust on an s14 post some pics? I got rid of my N1 Dual and was about to pick up an ex-mag, but for half the price this may be a better move...

EDIT: also any info on how much these things weigh?

I can take a pic and host it on my tmobile site, but I can't email it to anyone, my mail is down.

Weight is near nothing, they use hollow hangers and without a resonator I'd guess it to be like 15lbs total. OE is like 34,567lbs. Per piece.

i have a ka24de N/A with cat-co cat and the ss autochrome cat-back, it is only raspy and ricey when the car is not fully warm, otherwise i have got comments that it sounds like an STI, and many have mistaked my car for being turbo charged for being so mellow, i bit of droning at somewhat high speeds though(mines very dirty  )

I would like some pics from a S14.

Correct. RDM I, the blue car, was laid to rest a few months ago. RDM II is running the exhaust now, but I forgot about this thread and haven't taken pics yet. And it's now 23 degrees outside and dark, so no pics until maybe tommorrow.

There are no clearance issues, it's very much like any N1/Bee*R/GP Sports style exhaust. With OE manifold and the silencer it's very subdued with a low, throaty sound, on the old car with an SR downpipe and RT cat there was more growl to it, but still a very nice tone. I went through six different catbacks and numerous manifold/header combos and the SSA is the best sounding I've had.

That is a very convincing statement. Hmm, if ever think of an exhuast, this one is pretty much the one I"ll buy from all the praise. Love the angled look...mmmmmm....

(can anyone who has this exhaust in the Davis/Sac area give me a ride??)

so if i want a deep mellow gentle noise and not some obnoxious coffeecan rattle, is this a good exhaust for me?

some of the posts above compared this exhaust to that of a WRX or a 350Z. i think those are both very nice sounding exhausts, but they sound nothing alike imo. i have a 89 sohc n/a so do you think the sound will be a bit too loud and obnoxious?. you guys have the final word on whether or not i get this catback system so any feedback would be much appreciated.

o ya. other than the exhaust looking very dirty (ugly :/) after a while, and the crappy tone during startup, what are all the other negative side effects? do any of you have problems with clearance issues? does the exhaust scrape the ground sometimes? does it leave black residue on the rear bumper?

thanks in advance for ur help

i was just wondering why your exhaust looks nothing like the ones in the ebay ad... is it just cuz its dirty? or does the chrome finish eventually become like that for all exhausts?

projectRDM
01-27-2005, 08:32 AM
It's not chrome, it's stainless steel. Dirt, abrasion, exhaust gas, all make it change color a little. When it's clean (mine anyway) it looks fine. You obviously can't expect something hanging under the car to stay pretty do you?

Mines arrived like 4 days after i bought it. SSautochrome has great customer service and all and shiping is super duper quik. I got the cat back for $235 shipped. welding and quality looked above decent. very well built. hollow hangers, comes with gaskets, even an extra one, bolts bolts and bolts!

So my friend and I installed it into my s13 w/ sr20det in his garage and was soo excited. We thougth it would sound simular like the ones in the clips of this thread but sounded a bit different.

i installed a whole new exhaust system. 3" megan racing downpipe, straight pipe, and ssautochrome cat back. I also had a turbo outlet, but there were complications witht hat which i will will install later on. (everything was fine, but the silencer was shitty.) took us about 2 -3 hours installing everything because we used all hand tools, and didnt even have pb blaster or wd-40! lol. No lifter...just a jack and 4 jack stands.

when we tested it and turned on the virgin catback exhaust...VROOOM!!!!! CRAZY LOUD at cool temp. Now i always wanted the STI sound on my car, but never thought it would be possible with the 240sx, but with my set up, it went swell and Subaru WRX STI it sounded like. it idles like "gurgle-gurgle-gurgle-gurgle-gurgle" adn the more you rev, the faster the "gurgle (of course). When rolling on neutral, catback was completely silent. downshifting isnt so loud. best of all, cruising is just a constand "brrrrrrrbrrrr" sound, not very loud at all, until you downshift and accelerate, or step on it at a sudden, the thing is fucking loud as hell! sounded exactly like an STI or a muscle car. Power gain was drastic. probably over 20 hp's (to the wheels).

Mounting on the car was very stiff and secure. nice direct bolt on with no complications. everything went smoothly.

I wish i had clips for you guys to watch, but me no camera no nothing. well, hope my post could convice that ssautochrome catback isnt a "shit" prduct, but a very impressive one. :D

Nismo hangars are how much closer to the body? Worth $50?
And, is SSA stainless steel magnetic? I know boost designs is, with slight surface rust gathering on it, so it's cheap, mutt stainless. The only way I can see these companies making this stuff for much less than I can even buy the raw materials (bends) for is by using mutt stainless.

True, but even so, it's still $230 shipped. That's not much more than your local muffler shop would charge you for a crappy pressbent aluminized steel system and muffler.

hmmm. i doubt youll have the STI sound if its an n/a KA. but itll still be loud and monstrous. i hear n/a ka with no restictions is supposed to be even LOUDER than turbo.

although i think itll only hav ethat "STI" rumbling sound if you run a straight pipe instead of a catalytic converter. i dunno. mine sounds extremely loud, but i LOVE IT. but you can barely even hear the exhaust if your going like 1500 rpm at 3rd gear, 2300 rpm at 4th gear, and 2500 - 27-2800 rpm at 5th gear. almost completely silent on neutral. but once you punch it (especially in 3rd and 4th) above 4000 rpm...oh man you cant even hear the music or the people talking in the car.

only thing is i always gotta beat around the bush when i sense cops.

I wonder if that will even fit without the rear bumper being modfied. I'm going to ask the seller if he can give me some mroe detailed measurements.

It's a replica of the Apex'i N1 Dual, should fit fine.

yeah it fits exactly like the N-1 dual. my friend just bought one, i saw it on his car the other day. i think i may get myself one of these.
its cheaper than a used Apex N-1 dual.

Plus i think i may powdercoat everything (all the piping except the canisters), flat black, for rust protection.

hmmm. i doubt youll have the STI sound if its an n/a KA. but itll still be loud and monstrous. i hear n/a ka with no restictions is supposed to be even LOUDER than turbo.

All N/A's should be louder then turbos. Turbo motors are quieter since they have a turbine wheel to muffle a large percentage of the noise.

Wow, this thing is looking like a good deal. I was debating on an exhaust for my stock KA, but I'm tired of the car being silent. If worse comes to worse I could always get a resonator put in.

I just got my ssauto exhaust today. I could not be happier. When I first got it I must have drove around for like an hour and a half just to listen to it. :2f2f: Just like the others said it is real quite when you are just driving normally but as soon as u hit the gas the exhaust comes to life. This thing is loud on a NA/KA when your at WOT.

Gonna be hot, especially when the car actualkly will make some noise!

So im assuming you have a n/a ka? I'm really thinking bout gettin one of these exhausts, im jsut worried about it being too loud without a resonator. Is it significantly quiter with the silencer in?
Does anyone know if ssauto is going to be making more of the dual exhausts? I shoulda jumped on that while I had the chance :bash:

I had a 3inch exhaust very similar to the SS autocrome one. I got a ticket for modified exhaust. So I put in the silencer to test it and see what the DB level was, hoping I could pass. heh heh.

...92 db at idle (with silencer) 104 at 2500 rpm. 107 at 3500.

if you have been reading correctly, we have been saying its QUIET for an exhaust when your driving normal like under 3k RPMS, but when you punch it of course its going to be loud....I guess coming from my megan racing that droned a lot this is a world of a difference....high flow = loud....would you like some ear plugs? :naughtyd:

Thank you. I'm glad there's another intelligent person in here.

For the people complaining about noise, I made my points about my own exhaust with silencer in and OE manifold/downpipe in place. Obviously with a header and/or test pipe it will be a LOT louder, any exhaust will, and anyone on this board knows that. But it's no louder than any other full 80mm, non-resonated catback made by any other manafacturer either.

Why hasn't anyone modified the hangers yet? Can't you cut a little bit off the hanger and then re-bend it to fit?

Ahh... I don't think there is much you can do in terms of that as the muffler practically touches the back bumper cover as it is. I ordered some urethane hangers off ebay to reduce the movement and prevent stretching or sagging of the exhaust. I am still at stock ride height so I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Ah, didn't think of the muffler being right on the cover.

on my car the muffler rubs on the tow hook and its really obnoxious at certain rpms, havent figured out a good solution yet, i tried to take off the tow hook, but the bolts wouldnt budge. i will probably try to take it off and heat up the hook and bend it slightly so the muffler wont hit. :)

Anybody know if it's still possible to buy the s13 version? I checked on ebay and there are none listed, I checked the ssautochrome website and it's not there, I even e-mailed them and got no response. Any suggestions?

Okay, I need some help on this exhaust here. I want to buy the turbo back setup for my Sr20DET and was wondering what people thought of the setup as a whole? This includes the downpipe, outlet pipe, cat-back, and "cat pipe". I want to make a decent amount of power with my car and this is the most cost efficient way I have seen so far. Any input is appreciated.

iknowyoulike, do you just have the cat-back or do you have the whole turbo back? I'm only looking at this because it would save me money in my swap, otherwise, I was gonna spend a little bit more than this (by about 500 dollars) so it would be nice to know which parts are decnet and which aren't...............

At the end of the day, I think that I would rather buy some exhaust components that are modestly priced that have a better rep. I have been researching this all weekend and it seems to me that it will pay to go with my original exhaust plans. It may be a little more but I believe that it will be worth it as well. Since I live in CO and drive in the mountains, I have to worry about salt and mag-sulfate and that shit will eat cheap SS alive. I think I am gonna stick with Tanabe or Espelir.

i bought the turbo back for an s13, the only problem is that the dump pipe and downpipe doesnt sit right. it touches the frame so i had to force it in. other than that it made a big difference on the car

Hey Project D, if you're still reading this... I haven't had mine for that long, but the exhaust note is nice. The quality is definetly there, the exhaust is not made by SSAutochrome, It's made by some company called Motoria... SS just distributes/sells it. The exhaust is pretty light for the size and is worth the price. While I haven't had it for awhile, it has impressed me. I do agree with staying away from whatever SS is selling, the XS power from what I've noticed is horrible.

I got mine put on the past weekend. I got the 3 inch catback (single N1 style). Needless to say, it is loud, in a good way. I can feel the gain, nice quality for the price I paid.

Did anyone of you get a test pipe with the purchase of the catback system? I got a test pipe within the package (freebie?? ).

Here's my review on this exhaust.

I had an S14 OBX 3" resonator with a custom 3" bolt-on tail pipe/muffler for about 6 months. Super loud. Never got in trouble for it.

SSAUTO 3" exhaust. Not as loud as my old one, but I already got a ticket for it the day after I put it on. :ghey:

i know im bumping this back to the top, but i was curious if you guys have noticed that the N1 style ssac catbacks on ebay come with resonators now, and the pictures have changed. i was just wondering if anyone knows if they have stopped selling motoria catbacks and started making their own... if thats the case i dont know if i would want one. can someone who owns an ssac look at it and tell me if it looks the same? also does anyone have the dual catback? does it say motoria on it or come with the motoria test pipe?

hey guys i have the n1 duals replica installed in my s14.. hey for $150 their not bad.. it came with a free motoria test pipe as well(good thing too cus my after cat was really rusted.. its 2.5" from after cat to two 2.5" then 3" exhaust.. its really not as loud as i thought it would be and it has a nice deep tone to it i love it.. ive noticed i lost just a little torque on the low end but it sureelly makes it up at the high end.. When i floor it, it finally goes .. :naughtyd: .. fits perfectly with obx headers as well .. the only problem i had with it is the resonator in the catback is pretty low.. gotta raise my car up prob an inch cus TX has some bumpy uneven roads.. and i leave u with pics..

got mine too...but i think that the piping after the cat is 3", then two 2.5" pipes all throughout til the mufflers...anyways, this is a very high quality piece...i regret not taking pics before installing it cuz it was soooOOOooo bling and purdee...the tone is perfect with a resonator...first thru third gear @ 1000-3000rpm it sounds like a scoobie; nice throaty pounding...doesnt drone on the freeway...

however, it does seem like i lost a substantial amount of torque...i know i know, myth this; myth that...but hey, its my car, i drive/beat it everyday, i would know if i lost torque...plus, to all of you who swear by your dyno charts, yes 3" does make more power...but where? up top...i want down low. so for me, in a sense, it did lose power...bye bye scavenging...also, one of the hangers was waaaaaaay off :duh: ...its off by like 2-3 inches, which kinda pissed me off...and yes, be warned, ssac catbacks hang reeeeaaaallllyyyy low! i cant emphasize this enough...on ddrugs at full height, im scraping all over the place...the resonator is about 2.5-3.0 inches off the ground, no joke...pics soon...

basically to sum it up, for under $200 (price you would pay for crush bent custom), i will learn to deal with the lost in torque, i will buy a new exhaust insulator to compensate for the bad hanger, and i will angle more when driving...

IMO, well worth it...and its so cheap, try it out...use it at track event so you dont mess up your jDM tYte catbacks...if you dont like it, keep it around or sell it...you cant lose...

btw, does anyone know ssac's phone number? i wanna try and get something done about the defective hanger...after all, it does have a "1 yr. warrenty"...

So has anyone got this for their stock NA KA S13?

They only listed CA18DET & SR20DET on the auction. I emailed them and they said it won't work with the stock KA engine, but from previous posts it seems like people have installed their exhaust on a stock S13 before, so I don't understand why it'll work with an SR but not KA.

Are you going to ask this question all over the place? No one can make up your mind for you. One thing you might want to consider, N1 Duals are quite heavy and hang pretty low, though it does sound pretty good on an NA KA, not overly loud like some 3" exhausts. And SSAutochrome is identical to the A'pex unit, but cheaper and all stainless, but without JDM tyte brand. You have to decide what exhaust provides the best combination of looks, sound and price, we can't tell you what you want.

the bracket i'm talking about is in your 2nd picture, somewhat in the location of left top. its that lil bracket, you can barely see it. its just there on mine, didn't match up with the cars hole, (2 inches away from it) funny, all my hangers went in almost like it should.

i'm just thinking of buying a little metal sheet and weld it under the resonator/cannister to protect it somewhat.

ass15 - what i did with that bracket is add my stock hanger in there.. i bolted one end on the bracket of the exahust and then screwed the other end of the hanger to the stock position on the car since it was 2in away from that bracket.. worked like a charm.. ill be replacing mine with urethane hangers soon to tuck it in more..

sw-20 - looking good, loving the mesh wheels, once u get the rubber hanger in there it should help it out a bit more..

I'm probably gonna get one of these autochrome exhaust tonight, the turboback one, I have a n/a ka but i just wanted to be prepared for whats to come.
1. So the downpipe can be bolted on to the stock exhaust mani. and I can use the cat that it comes with without having any problems like the check engine light etc?
2. For those of you who are getting them for 234 shipped, did the price just raise to 275 or are you guys not getting them from their website, j/w?
3. The clearance of the exhaust shouldn't be too big of a problem with the stock right height I suppose but just double checking?
4. I'm just deciding over the turbo-back exhaust or the cat-back exhaust for my n/a ka, I know i'm gonna have torque loss but I hear the high end gains make up for it... i'm not asking the "what looks better kinda question", just wondering if the rest of the parts are worth it, are they good quality, the downpipe and cat that is. Do you guys think that I will get hearing loss becuase from what I hear its hella loud when you step on it?
Thanks in advance.

no, i have stock exhaust mani. i just figured i would get the package since all my parts are 10 yrs. old and my exhaust is ghetto, like one tip is missing, lol. Are you trying to say too loud? or its not gonna work?

well yeah, but your planning to get the "turbo back" package right? doesnt that include the exhaust mani.? thats what im saying, ssac exhaust mani, no cats, no resonator, and 3" piping is too loud for my taste...often times (even in this thread), people have been complaining about how the 3" catback alone is too loud...i personally like the way mine sounds with a resonator...so you should really meet with ppl who have it to really tell...

no, i'm not getting the sr package with the turbo mani. just the step down from that, with the downpipe, cat, mid sect. and rear sect., i know its probably gonna be pretty loud, but maybe the silencer will quite it down enough if it does turn out to be unbearable. so would you guys say it is as good of quality as the HKS Hiper? Also if i get it should i use the motoria cat or my stock cat with my n/a or does it not matter really? Alright thanks for the replys so far.
I don't mean to be jacking this thread just figured it was related. :2f2f:

bump, i need some answers real quick to my previous questions just so i can make my final decision. the downpipe will fit from the cat to the stock exhaust mani. right? Thanks.

I just put my SSAutochrome exhaust on this past weekend. I love it! I think it sounds great, a few V8 guys that i know think the same. Tonight i am putting it on the dyno and I am going to see what the difference in hp is with and without the rear baffler piece they give you. I will also post sound clips on the dyno

I'm still planning on getting the dual setup for the S13, just money's alittle tight, lol. As for nanging too low, anything can be re-welded... I'm thinking have the faulty hanger re-done, and clamp the exhaust hangers to gain .5 "

You buy the shit from their ebay auctions, then it ends up being like 230 shipped. You want a cat-back not a turbo back. No you wont get hearing loss. :loco:
