View Full Version : Alphabet soup (chips vs. the rest)

Erm, I don't know what that face is supposed to mean, but It's sort of how I feel. Just saying.

Anyway if I'm not too misinformed there are a couple of options for those of us running boost.

There are super chips out there that do all the tuning for us (sorts out A/F, boost, monitors this and that etc etc) These generally tend to be done by... err... US companies? (have no idea)

and there are all the separate gizmos, AVC-R, S-AFC, TTs (not really related),  BCS and a bunch of other things that we can run separately so we can adjust each variable to our liking. HKS, Trust, Apex'I and them all make these.

Is that about right? what do most of you run? First thing to put in along w/ the SR20 (or turbo if you're sticking to the KA) ? I assume it'd be a Boost Controller and Turbo Timer... what about all that AVC-R and S-AFC, F-CON IV and those?

Helllllppp I'm stuck in alphabet soup!

boost isn't controlled by the ECU actually.
'most' of the electronics for our cars are from japan.
boost controller and turbo timer are the basic electronic upgrades for a turbo car. AVC-R is actually a boost controller. S-AFC is a fuel computer, and it's optional as far as i know.

I couldn't begin to explain every peice of electronic gadgetry that will enable you to fine tune specific functions of your car by overriding ECU or other operations.  

I'll give you a helpful shorthand though - there are no "chips" that do it all for us - and really, no chips at all.  (too complex here to explain why).  You CAN buy an entire aftermarket ECU that has been reprogrammed to maximize performance for the modifications you have done.  If you had and SR, you might find that there are a few companies that offer "daughter boards" that allow you to skip certain ECU areas and replace those codes with higher performance oriented settings. (a poor man's ECU upgrade).  Some people making these boards have ripped the source code and refined it for certain add ons.  In the US, good luck finding the boards or people who can make them!  (I know of one person who may be doing it)

"no chips"? ... I guess the equivelant would be the completely redone ECU then, or at least for my purposes.

Okay so considering BCS and TT are the most basic/standard add ons, who make good Boost controllers? I know Trust Apexi and HKS do, but of them, which do you prefer and why? Seriously though, which systems do y'all use?

How useful are the Speed Limiter Defenser and Fuel Cut Defenser? or whatever they're called...

Is it too complex to explain that the chips are soldered onto the circuit board, not socketed, and that desoldering chips is something that requires some skill, without which the ECU can be damaged in the process?
