View Full Version : Sr20det'd a feasible daily driver in Los Angeles?
I recently got a job to work at a tech company near LAX. I only have one car, which is the 240sx, and I'm planning on swapping in a motor. I'm not going to add a body kit or anything flashy to attract attention. Now my question is, will it be feasible to use the car with a motor swap without much trouble in LA? Mainly worried about the police there. Which brings me to the next question, if you do drive your sr20det daily how do you go about being covert?

just drive it like you would a chevy sprint and you will be fine. No sudden outbursts of speed, don't shave your head and don't dress like a thug. easy

I have been driving around with my SR with no probelms since the 4 months I had it and I have a job very near to LAX too. But I do have a Ex-mag exhaust so it very quiet. Cops don't really look at me twice. As lot a you do not rev like mad and do burnouts you will do fine.

We don't have inspection. WE do however have smog unlike other states that have to pass all kinds of inspection. Passing smog is easy, just gotta know the right people. To answer the question to the original owner, just don't be an ass on the road and have a stock looking exhuast like everyone else said (rsr exmag) and you will be fine. Driven mine for a few months and all is well (except for a speeding ticket going to san fran doing 75!!!!). They treated me as if i was a normal person speeding. Nothing to get worried about. Have fun...

i was wondering if u had any Gauges n stuff visable in ur Car. The reason i ask is when u got pulled over did the cop look around or anything like that ? Cuz i kno Gauges get cops wondering about stuff sometimes. Gauges do look like dougnuts :yum: .... But back to the topic, i know guys that have had their motor for over a year now and like everyone said, don't do anything that would attract the wrong attention and you should be fine. Turbo motors tend to have a deeper tone than NA cars so its not as loud in lower RPMs to begin with.

No I didn't have any guages (too poor for one). When i went from n/a to turbo, my exhuast became ALOT quieter, in case ur curious.

Glove box is your gauges new best friend if you want it stealthy.

i had gauges before sr and now
before above center vents on s13
now on s14 its below airbag in dash
fuck it
haha
i dont ride w/ them on at night (defi BF is bright) but in days its on
depends on cop
and no use living in fear i think
most will hassle you but if you are polite and nice they let you go
very few are in the 'know'
i wouldnt stress, makes car life unenjoyable
dont live in fear.

You have a really loud exhuast too? Man if i didn't live in fear, i might actually try the Hipower or the nurspec, since they are more free flowing.

irght now tanabe w/ silencer its pretty quite
but after thursday yeah loud
i had a kakimoto on the s13, super loud, got pulled over one time. and ran it daily for about 20 mins to 30 min drive to work, including freeway and city
if you drive safely, slowly and dont do anything stupid you more then likely WONT get pulled over or hassled.

you have to think of it as a stock car. atleast in japan. its meant to be a daily driver in stock form. i have a redtop with a hks ssqv and i drive it daily without any problems. a puck clutch kinda sucks if your stuck in traffic. keep it stock and it should be good as gravy.
cool thanx for the replies. I'm going with the stock route. For added precaution imma have everything metallic exposed painted flat black.

I would worry more about vandalism than police around here. People have tried to break in my car here in Westwood and in the LAX area.

i have been driving a sr in my S14 for over a year now... no problems..
just once I got pulled over for my exhaust right after I got my sr..put some silencers on, went to the ref and got it passed...
I live in Brea... and drive to and from Cerritos every day... no one hassles if you don't act like a fool.

Acting like a jackass will get you into trouble.... so the concept is simple.... don't drive like a dick... and you will be fine.

I run low like PG does on there cars except im on 15s steelies. had to use c-clamps to hold ruber exhaust hangers higher to scrape less. Rite now Im using an old school RS-R exhaust. Big 3inch piping, very deep sound, can hear it on idle. I think what gets me buy is the fact that is has a gay looking domestic angled exhaust tip. Only times i been pulled over was for like not signaling and BS like that. Soon imma have a buddy club spec 2 copy made for me. Loudness is only those who don't sit inside race cars. SR is just like KA, its a motor, nothing special b/w them except a turbo. I would worry more about maintenance issues such as proper cooling and regular fluid changes.

this whole smog thing. if you have out of state plates you can you still be forced to smog and do CA inspection?

You are required by law to change your plates to CA plates within 10 days of the car's arrival in the state if you are going to become a resident.

im in the bay area but it can still apply: im not really worried about having the engine because my car looks stock except with exhaust.. my gauges/turbo timer etc are in the glove box. i dont really use my glove box anyway so i figured why not. and i just close it so the interior looks completely stock. the only times ive gotten pulled over was when i first got the car and i had no front plates, but i had the KA anyway. I have an hks downpipe+hi-flow cat+ JIC Bullet catback w/magnaflow 4" tip and it's noticeably loud.... just learn how to drive your car in the right RPM/gas range where it's most quiet. Cops have been behind me numerous times and follow me for a while but i dont freak out or anything i just drive...then they just leave me alone. just another car on the road

Gotta agree here. I roll with my loud ass 80mm gp sports exhaust on an n/a s14. The loud ass exhaust gets plenty attention at WOT. When I know there's a cop around I drive normal and keep it just a little above the speed limit. Don't drive suspiciously or worry when theres a cop near you. That's the main thing obviously. Almost all the time cops just ignore me and move on. I've only been pulled over once in this car and in my last s14 I never have been pulled over. And the only time I got pulled over was when I decided to have a lil session of spirited driving through traffic going 65+mph. My car was screaming to get impounded, but the cop let me go and I got out of 6 fines totaling to about $2500. IT also really really really helps if you have a clean record. I cannot stress how much that helps out. It also depends on what area of los angeles your at and if they have a "problem" with modified cars in the area. I live near LAX and the 2 cities I try my best to stay out of are Torrance and Carson.

Weird, I've never had problems driving in Torrance/Gardena/Carson, I was driving around those parts every day last year.
Shift into neutral and coast.
As for Irvine, just moved here recently, so we'll see how cops are. My car sticks out like a sore thumb in between the Bimmers and Benzes. I drove around LA for years with no problem from cops.

I use that method and it seems to work!! Ive had local enforcement officers pull me over and tell me that they like the car and just wanted a closer look at it and once they went around the car a few times just let me go! :coolugh:

When I was in irvine the cops there are pretty bad. Myself and my brother with his greddy sp has been pulled over. At that time i had a integra gsr with a greddy evo exhaust and that got me pulled over also. It was because of our exhaust. They busted a U-turn for me and tailed me for a few blocks before pulling me over. Seems like they have nothing better to do that day i guess.
