Yeah this is gonna suck cause I don't have pics but...
The black box that mounts on the driver side shock tower that has vacuum lines coming out of it, whats it do? I'm in the middle of a swap and I see SRs without it, can I scrap this?

I was gonna take pics but my camera is dead, I'm going up to work on the car tomorrow so I'll get pics then.
Another thing: when I took off the intake there's oil on the intake side of the turbo but not the exhaust. This worried the hell outta me, but my dad insists that since there's no oil on the exhaust side, it's probably just cause the engine was on it's side and oil dripped in from the head and it's no problem. Could it be a bad turbo?

Small black box with an 2pin electrical plug on it? Throw it away, it's the OE boost solenoid.

OE boost soleniod? This was already on the car when it had the KA in it.
I found a pic on google, I circled it...

THEROMAN thats your egr on a KA. For sr its the boost solenoid, most likely. If it has a pipe connecting to the exhaust it may be the AIV.

Its the AIV, the EGR is under the intake manifold near the firewall :)

Sr's have egr?

Sr's have egr?
They sure do.
They sure do.
99% sure jdm SR only has aiv, no egr.
The ROMAN
01-16-2005, 05:25 PM
Ok cool, so can I remove it? It's just for emissions right, will it affect idle on an SR?

Fuck I don't remember.
It's one or the other.
I'll go look later.

my redtop is getting fucked over by emissions for not having an EGR.
You could get some $$$ and have one installed... Yeah right

i'm pretty sure my redtop has just an aiv, well an aiv plug.

s13 sr has no egr, just AIV, get rid of it

yeah, i'm dumb. disregard.

That is your EGR system and yes you can bypass it. Whether or not you throw a code I dont know, but it will minimaly increase your performace as you are now burning clean air only as opposed to some spent exhaust....
Holy shit, nice reading skills.
20 minutes of discussion about that box being the AIV, and you come in and say it's the EGR.
To the original poster, I had assumed you were discussing a part in the SR clip, my mistake. Yes, it's the AIV, and no, you don't need it.

ahh bite me, wtf is an AIV and why does my car have it?

Air induction valve - lets warm air heated by exhaust into intake tract. It's a smog thing.
Ultimately bad for performance, but good for emissions.

Would removing this cause us with the Ka to fail smog?

it might fail visual if your tech notices it's not there. all S13 had it but no S14 had it.

what you described is a TAC(Thermostatic Air Cleaner) system which 240's dont have.
When you let off the gas the timing retards and CO emission go up. The AIV system takes fresh air from the intake system and puts it into the exhaust and the extra oxygen helps burn off the CO emissions before they get to the cat. It wont rob any power because it's a valve and not an air pump which would run off a pulley. . When the valve opens, the vacuum created by the exhaust pulses suck the air in automatically eliminating the need for pulley driven pump.

You get an A+ for the day Var. Yes, scrap it.

Not if you have a decent running KA.
I pulled my AIV and EGR and passed emissions with flying colours.
Not only that, but I laughed and told the tech I pulled them. He just said "Wow... and it passed...thats cool".
Then again, the standards for an 89 sohc may be different from that of a newer dohc.
the SOHC motors run less compression and timing so you can get away with no EGR, but the DOHC for some odd reason dont do well. every single one i've tested had really high NOx. ??!? the comp isnt even that high..9.5:1.. I think it's the 20ยบ of timing that does it.

that looks like a vacuum line for his wastegate going across the top of the valve cover...his throttle cable is routed fine...
