purchasing car from out of state... smog question

I'm purchasing a s14 with an sr20det from out of state. When i register the car in cali, i know i have to do a smog check but can i goto ANY smog check place or does the car have to goto a smog ref since its from out of state? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

One you tranfer the title to your name, the DMV will issue your registration and it should say if it's required to go to a Test Only station or just a smog station. I've been seeing more and more out of state vehicles being referred to a Test Only Station.

But usually DMV wont even issue you anything with out an initial smog check. The only way to find out is to try to have your car smogged at any station. If it works, you're good. If it doesn't work you have to go to a TO/ or a Ref.
