View Full Version : Help diagnose my car...

I have a '92 FB with 120k miles.  About a year ago I had my clutch replaced.  Ever since then, whenever I drive in reverse (like pulling out of my garage or something) a loud moaning noise comes from the middle of the car.  It is similar to the noise made if you kind of "halfway" press the brakes on your bike and the rubber rubs against the bike rims.  I am thinking it is either a problem with the brakes or clutch, any ideas?  Thanks.

rotors have to be changed

Is it a Squeak or a Scrape. My bike makes both sounds. :/

If the rotors have to be changed why does it only make the noise when driving in reverse?

It is not a squeak or a scrape, kind of a deep moan.

Maybe your handbrake cable was adjusted to tight.  How many clicks can you pull the e-brake up to?

You should check your rear brake pads and resurface your rotors.

He has a valid point... Why would the brakes only make a noise when it is in reverse? I don't think direction of rotation should have any influence on the problem. You would think that if the rotors were warped, that the noise would persist either in reverse or drive.

does the moan change with speed in reverse?  change pitch? get louder softer?

I have the same noise in my '91 HB and I'm pretty sure it's a frozen(siezed) right-rear caliper.

The reverse gear is strait cut rather than helically cut like your forward gears, so when you back up you get a little gear noise. That’s my guess, nothing to be alarmed about; most cars are like this.

Thanks for the insight. Like GI Joes says, "Knowing is half the battle".

The noise occurs when I begin to back up and persists for about 10-15 ft before it dies out.  I didn't figure it was serious, that's why I've just ignored it for the past year.

It is probably a loose rear caliper like Coch said, I had the same problem in my 93 240 going in reverse. It is like the sound of running over something in gravel.. Some other people I know had the same problem

If it is the rear caliper then I'm going to be pissed off.  I don't know what the deal is, but I have had those back calipers replaced twice in the past two years!  Now that I think about it, the first time I had caliper problems it did make a similar sound.  Except it was about five times louder and made my car shake like crazy.

Anyway, thanks to all you guys who replied, I think I'll have it looked at now that it may be something serious.
