View Full Version : Blue smoke under boost

I just finished my engine swap, and installed a new turbo while I was at it. When I took it out the first time I noticed that I was getting alot of blue smoke during boost. but none at idle and none to speak of during normal driving. The engine had sat for 4-5 months without use, and the turbo was new. So I guesse my question is how do I determine which one it is.

Piston rings...

That is kinda what I am leaning towards as well. I pulled the plugs before starting it up, the first time, and I noticed that there was oil on the piston heads. This engine feels great, and the car has never idled this smooth. just like a new car. is if it is the rings, is there any way to fix this, as in the engine restore, or am I basically screwed. lastly, is this something that might go away after warming the engine up and running it alittle. thanks.

could it be oil pushing past the seals on the turbo too?
what kind of oil setup do you have for it?

check turbo on compressor side maybe that will be it :w00t: .I dynoed tuned a supra that once you would let go on boost it smoke like shit but that was the turbo

check your vacuum lines in the back of the motor. I had this same problem when I first had my ka-t. I had a ripped vacuum line and that fixed the problem.

really, if it was a vacume line wouldnt It idle slightly rough. The turbo is a new t3/t4 from Garret, I kinda hope it is the turbo, that way I would get a free one cause of my warranty. If it is from the turbo I should see some oil in the compressor when I take the down pipe off, correct. and if it is in the engine I should notice really low compression numbers., does this sound about right.

Your compression might be within spec. It is the oil ring that is not doing its job. If it is the oil ring you can replace just the rings. But you have to deglaze the cylinder bore and will have to use iron rings. That's if it is the rings.

If it's in the compressor it would be in the hot pipe not the DP.

right, right. nothing in the hot pipe, Thank God. The turbo is worth more than the engine.

sometimes when a car sits for a while the valve seals dry up and then when you start it they crack and start leaking oil into the combustion chamber. Usually if it's a valve seal you can keep driving it and the oil will burn off within 10 minutes and then the smokeing will stop until your turn the car off again. If the smoke continues i would say rings.

(then again since it's only under boost it may be the rings)

I guesse I am hearing that it was billows of grey smoke, what would this mean. thanks.
