I just got quoted at Earl Scheib for some paint. Here's the break down, they're top of the line paint Pro 3 Plus which includes:

-machine and hand sand
-wiping it down w/ their solvent
-base primer that seals
-2 coats of paint w/ integrated clear coat
-2 coats of EURO clear
-UV protection
-other protection stuff
-6 yr warranty
-painting my roof a diff color
-painting the door jams
-painting chuki sidesteps
-painting 3piece OEM rear valence

Cool guy, shops been around 30+ years, I was looking at other cars they had in the shop, two 240s, one w/ an SR, two accords and a VW. Looks good and they only got the Pro2 w/o EURO clear. Minor orange peel. Everything would have cost $1100, then $850 for the months special but after some haggling, he went down to $550 OTD and he'd need 2 days to paint it. What do you guys think? I'm in no need of show winning paint but dont' want ghetto ass rattle can paint either. What do you guys think? Drop it off tommorow? Take off my lights and door panels? Here's my before pic I snapped today:

sounds like a decent deal. Id find out what kind of paint they are going to use. I know they have a even better repution then maaco. But for 500 I would expect much and Im sure ur not looking to get alot out of it.

this may be off-topic.. but i was wondering if primer is suppose to be exposed like that for a top notch paint job.. one of my friends says that primer shouldnt be exposed and paint should go on it after primer goes on your car..

you usually sand it down anyways before paint, regardless of how long the primer has been on there, even lay down an extra layer of primer after sanding...

i mean it's just primer and will add on less then an hour to the process...

Not too expensive, but I would be scared of the quality of the job at that price..

So their single staging it and then clearing over that for a deeper look im assuming? What brand of paint are they going to use?

primer is technically used to correct minor imperfections, cover mud-work, and cover low grit stratches. you don't need to have a coat of primer to start with. If you're changing the color, most likely you will just because you'll need to cover up the spot's you'll go all the way down to metal when sanding the car down. but even then, its for adhesion...not for a "show car quality" look. the best way is to finish repairs...then sand entire car down with 400grit, etch prime the spots where metal is showing. let that dry, sand that smooth, seal the entire car(you can either go wet to wet after sealer or sand down the sealer once its dry) and then go to base/clear or single stage. for 500 bucks on a color change, it's well worth it even if it doesnt look 100% but i would be weary after a year or so. most likely, since its so cheap, they are going to use a adhesion promoter and not do much sanding(other than smooth out rough spots). and most of those "guarenteed" products will start to lose adhesion after a certain amount of time. After its painted, just be careful with air hoses and power washers around your newly painted car or you might see the old color start to shine through.

just forewarning you of a worst-case scenario.....to be honest, just ask if you can be present during the preperation...just to make sure they are indeed sanding/scuffing the entire car prior to paint to eliminate worries of peeling and shit like that. are they taking off all the moldings and removing the windshields? taking the doors off? etc etc. also...ask to see cars they painted over a year ago(non-employee owned)...this will also give you an indicator of how their long term quality is(which is most important i'd say)

The shops within 5mins driving distance from my apt. and 8mins from my school. I have a huge gap bet. 9-3 tommorow so I'm gonna chill over there and watch them do the work. I figure, I'm not gonna keep this car for more than 2 years long time quality isn't that important. They were telling me how maaco uses a custom mixed paint with a promoter in it but they use something else. I was watching them prep another car and they sure sanded the shiet outta it. For the longest time I was debating the silvia face which I have stored for now. It seemed pretty pointless for me to convert while my front end is perfectly fine. Only thing is, my front bumper is stretched... I don't know what it is.

yah man i feel yah, anything is better then what you got right now.. but earl shiesty?? ive heard macco was better.. This isnt the shop off chicago is it? My mom had 2 cars painted there, and tho it was better then what they looked like before, lets just say after 6 months, the van was back there for touch ups.

have you considered looking for 1 day paint and body? I heard thier work is way better then both of em.

Call McKinney Motorsports, they did the prep on their purple S13 (if they still have it) and then took it and got it painted at one of those discount paint shops...im sure its been a while since they did it....see how its holdin up w/theirs! Also I agree with the guy up there.....try and see if you can hang out while they do it, Id wanna know they are taking all the steps they say they are! Take me w/you Khoa, you know how picky I am! Anyways good luck!

sup koah, yah as hypertek stated 1day paint (certain ones) i have seen turn out easily 1100 worth of work for like 600. i heard the one in glendale is really nice. im not that generous to pick you up way out there, but tr some other places, i know that one shop proto does really really good work for 1100. even just 500 would turn out better then a earl(quantity over quality) schieb paint.

IIRC Earl Scheib uses nason paint. (At least the one I went to) It's single stage booboo.

Their prep sucks ass, BTW. They usually don't even sand the car for "hook up" jobs or the discount w/ flyer jobs.

I had the paint on my old car, it wasn't too bad, but as soon as the paint took any kind of impact (even like bumping another car while parallel parking), the paint came right off.

I doubt it would have lasted any longer than 2 yrs at most.

Not trying to scare you off, just giving you the facts.

However, given the current condition of your car's paint, I'd go for it.. you're not gonna get a decent job doen for that price unless you know someone or you get a mad crazy hookup.

It wont look bad, so if you can live with it and dont wanna spend $2k on a good painjob, go for it.

This is very true.
My friends celica's paint came right off after small impact.

Oh, and your prices arent cheap...
same shit you've listed was done cheaper even with handful dents.

saw this mr2 on the board that got just got painted steel mist grey, got 15+ dings/dents out, and painted doorjams for 6-7 something (pro 3 or euro pearl package or something). pics looked really good. i was considering doing it too. either earl or maaco, something cheap. you guys/gals know of any more "bang for the buck" paint shops?

khoadogg, which one you going to? for some reason when i went, they budge really easily. they dropped the price a couple of hundred in response to me asking what colors they have. post pics and tell us how it goes...

nason is dupont's budget paint below chromabase and way below premier. BUT a guy at my shop just painted this talon hes going to sell with nason single stage black and its laid out pretty well. If you arent going for show, they're aint nothing wrong with nason for the price(ie how cheap) it is. i don't know anything about this earl's place as we dont have them out here but its hard to compare it to maaco because places like that have decent bodymen and usually pretty decent painters. the problem is, people want CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP and so they'd lose their asses if they spent the time to prep it correctly so thats why you hear all these horror stories about them. so they just make it LOOK decent and ship it.

Oh no, I didn't wreck it, the owner after me wrecked it. I met this young kid who had an SR'd car that had some wiring problems and SR problems and he had to go to test only out here. So we traded cars minus our suspension, interior and wheels. He just paid someone off and I did a little extra work to get my new car registered. I did leave the fuel management, aero gear and KA-T setup. I liked the old car better but something about that higher redline and always wanting changed pushed me to trade cars. All in all, we both got what we wanted. Thanks for the comment and concern!
