View Full Version : No Clockspring... S13

I bought a 240 recently and it doesn't have a clockspring (the part in the steering wheel that makes all the electrical parts work supposedly... like the horn, cruise, airbag I guess.)
The other owner had a aftermarket steering wheel put on (but he took it off before he sold it) and I guess it's taken out but he says that he doesn't have it.
I had a horn installed wuth a button to pass inspection but I hear these clocksprings are like $400 or something outrageous, even the shop said theres no explainable reason why they are so much $$.
Anyone know where I can get one or does anyone have one or are there alternatives... I'm no expert on clocksprings.
Anyways if this doesn't turn out I'll check out a junk yard... it's just a little hike up there.
Thanks

S13s do not have clocksprings. Simple.
The S13 column housing has three pins that provide horn/cruise contacts, the OE wheel has three brass rings that mate to these pins when installed. Generally an aftermarket wheel hub will only have a single contact for the horn, in which case you need to modify the hub or the housing to accept all three contacts, or relocate the cruise switches entirely.

i went through the same thing. i didnt really care bout my horn, so i never cared. i installed a nardi wheel a while back and the horn button did not work, so i got a horn button routed and installed so i could pass inspection.
for some reason b4 i had my horn fixed it would work sometimes if i touched the wires together, and sometimes it wouldnt. i think its an issue with connectivity.

on a S13 (non-airbags) you pop the horn cover off and you will see a large nut in the middle. Remove that and pull the wheel off. I can't remember if there was anything else, it was a while ago last I did it. It was a pain in the butt to get my wheel off for whatever reason. Good luck.

I had a clockspring, well actually I didn't have a clockspring, but it was close to that. I had a HICAS sensor.

My horn doesn't work, and my turn signals wont turn off once I've completed a turn, and I have stock steering wheel.. lol :P
I think its cause the back of the wheel isnt touching the steering column, it sitsoff it a few inches.
It's weird.

Yes. Turn signal cancel is built in to the wheel, if it's not flush it won't make contact.
