I am so excited to finally be able to post. For some reason I couldn't figure out how to log in so in the proccess I have looked through roughly 250 pages of the chat forum to learn as much as I could before I posted. Anyways enough of the small talk...I am currently the owner of a '95 240se w/a full 4" custom exhaust w/blitz muffler, 300zx brakes, act stage 2 clutch, and a soon to be installed s14 sr(hopefully done by the end of the week). Here's my ? I will not be using the side mount intercooler and will be running @ stock boost levels, will I have any problems w/overheating while I save up for a fmic?(I have 2 12" electric fans on the radiator if this makes any difference)
p.s. Plz feel free to flame me cuz I wouldn't feel like a noob if u didn't

so you're saying you're planning on running non intercooled until you save up for a fmic?
No offense, but thats a pretty dumb idea. Even at stock boost levels, there's a reason why the sr comes with an intercooler from the factory. Use it. Then when you have enough money, swap it out for your new fmic.
BTW, Welcome to Zilvia.

You can try to drive the car without a side mount while you save up for a FMIC. But dont blame zilvia when something happens to your car. Even at stock boost levels. SMIC for stock boost levels, FMIC to up boost levels. But hey its your car! Good Luck!

still....why would anyone need a full 4" exhaust. Thats HUGE!
Anyway, why not just use the SMIC? There is a reason the car came with it.

ok then...if i go ahead and purchase a fmic what size should i look for(dimensions?) and what should i expect to pay(a inexpensive as poss). btw my goal for this car is +/- 300whp and while i know that i will need more that an intercooler for this i don't want to buy one that will be useless in a year

Go all out and get the GReddy with the piping, lol. If you are running a KA Radiator... you WILL overheat. No way around it. You need to get an upgraded stock SR radiator, or a Koyo/Fluidyne. Anyway, good luck, keep us posted.

if you want a FMIC kit which includes all the piping check the normal SR dealers for prices.
I have a SMIC and I'm glad I installed it b/c it saved me some of money when I first started the swap. The SMIC includes the bov so you don't have to buy one plus it's recirculated so my car doesn't randomly die... I have a HKS FMIC but am waiting on a couple other things before I install it.

Thanks Timinator....my only concern is that if i install the smic then if have to modify the bumper to allow proper air flow(?). the only reason that i am not having it installed right now is b/c the guy who's installing it says @ stock boost i wont need it and besides i did a search and someone had written breifly on this topic before and one of the replies said that a pipe from the throttle body to the compressor would suffice for the time being....and in my prev post i had inquired about whether or not it would help that i had 2 electric fans on the radiator do you know if this will help at all

Yeah, you need to cut a hole in the bumper and in the fender liner to allow air to get to the intercooler.

Maybe you should get him to sign something that says that so IF it blows up or whatever you can make him fix for free.. :hammer:

I have 2 fans (and a koyo rad)...most peolpe that switch to electric fans have 2. I've heard people argue that the clutch fan is actually better but I dunno. I'm sure it's safe to use the KA rad with the SMIC but when you put a large FMIC in front it's gonna block a lot of air no matter what fans you have.
