offsets for dummy's

17x7 + 40 belongs on your crx, not a RWD car like a 240

offset means how much the rims will be sticking out or tucked into/from the car fender. the more negative offset, the more it sicks out (which looks better in my opinion). the more positive offset means your rims tucked under the fender which looks goofy.

if you want a perfect offset for your car, 0 offset would be perfecto.

if you want your ride to look super cool with 17"', then get soemthing like -32mm offset. it will look cool. (but again that just in my opinion)

Just get some nice 14x6 rims, with a +65 offset.

LOL, why are you posting this question? I know for a fact you know.

haahahah...+65 with 14 inch rims will look like your driving with your OEM spare wheels.

actually I dont know, ive never bought rims before so I never took the time to notice or read about it. .. a high post count doesnt mean i know allot.. it just means I post allot.. could be that I ask allot of questions? anyways so im seeing around
+0-35 im thinking that 17's may be too big but they don't make anything i like in 16s..
if I decide to go w/ a 17x7.5 do those offset number stay the same or do they change? I know what offset means now thanks to tirerack.com

ok I see alot of talking but nobody said the real definition of offset.well lets say there are two parts to a wheel the ring and the face. the face is the part with the spokes. now if that part is mounted in the dead center of the ring you have a 0 offset.if you move the face towards the outside of the car you have positive offset. and if you move it towards the inside of the car thats negative offset. 17x7 40 offset will not sit perfectly flush its close though. yes it has the stock offset but it is a wider rim.

the rim and the face... but your definition seems to be pretty good... cept for you messed up a little

if the face is closer to the outside in relation to dead center it's gonna be positive...dead center will be 0, closer to the inside will be negative

The best wheel and tire calculator I've found has been on this website. http://www.zilvia.net/faqs/offset/wheelstires.asp

also this is very helpful too!
http://www.miata.net/garage/garagetires.html
the The Tire Size Calculator and Comparator has proven very help full too!

dont do a 17x7, thats weak. Plus you will NEVER find something with a decent offset in that size.
For an 8" I would do around a 15 and a 9" mid 20s. Please dont do a 17x7, you will regret it.
