I looked around here and even had my mom call a friend at the Bureau of automotive repair but he has not gotten back to me or her at the moment so I need to know what California’s state rules are for db levels and test persuaders

What rpm do the test it at?

Maximum db is 95.

How far away dose the db reader have to be?

I had my car tested yesterday and the tested it at 4200 rpms and I thought it had to be done at 3000 rpms, he put the db reader A foot away from my car and it ended up being a 102.2 db was the best I got out of three. So any help w/ this would be great.

I read they tested it at half of what your redline is.

I looked for more info, but the J1169 standards cost $45 from the SAE store and is not listed on the dmv website.

Yeah its pain in the ass all I could find was the Db limit and where to get tested nothing about test requirement, or testing procedures. Hopefully the guy at the Bureau of automotive gets back to me then I will know for sure what the rules are.

I have access to all the SAE books at school. Unfortunetely I won't be back on the campus till the 15th. Some universities or local libraries might have them for you to refer to.

They’re the people that decided how to measure what weight oil is, and I'm sure a bunch of other shit to. My mom says they standardize things. :mepoke:

my dad thought the same, i guess it used to be? but then we looked it up on forums and stuff and its iv heard people say 12 in thats wat this ref said at my school, to 12 in, off a forum. and its supposed to be a 45degree angle away. i have a db meter at my house and i got 108 without silencer and 93 with silencer. nd thats at 3500 rpm

Yours didn't seem to be louder than mine but I guess it was. The 45-degree angle thing is correct that’s how they did mine. Seeing as how you have a Db meter you should test it at 4200 rpms and see what you get.
