I'VE SEARCHED ALL DAY! here's the problem. I noticed a good amount of transmission oil leaking from my car, and the first thing I did was assume that it was the rear tranny seal because I know these tend to go out. I lift the car and to my surprise there isnt that much or any oil at all leaking between the driveshaft and the tranny. Turns out the leak is coming from somewhere around the shifter drips down then accumulates around the drain plug. Everything seems tight, the rubber boot that sits right on top of the transmission is cool, and the drain plug is nowhere close to loose. I know my car is low on transmission oil because now Im getting this weird grinding noise at around 2500-3000 rpm which is definitely metal. I need to know what other seals maybe up front, or any suggestions on how to address this problem.

assuming your tranny is similar to mine, its probably leaking out from that rubber boot under the shifter. theres actually a bunch of shifter boots...

#1 the one in the car (secured to cheapo plastic interior)
#2 the one under that one (bolted to the car itself)
#3 the one under that secured by 2 zip ties

mine was leaking from #3... there are two zipties that are supposed to secure it tightly with the shifter. i guess the boot itself got worn over time and/or the top ziptie got loose. tranny fluid would splash out from there (the area was completely covered... fluid was puddling making a god awful smell when i drove). so i re-ziptied it tightly and used RTV sealant where it meets the shfiter.

theres also a seal in the front (have to drop the tranny remove clutch stuffs for that one), or perhaps its leaking from one of the holes for sensors that plug into the tranny? hope u fix ur problem.

hey thanks for the help. i took off all boots again to inspect. i tried to do a ghetto job of fixing the boot that sits on the actual tranny with some duct tape hoping that it would save it. turns out the tape couldnt even stay on cause of the oil. there was a large amount of oil on as well so hopefully its just the boot that needs to be replaced. you think i couldve lost that much oil overtime just through the shifter? whats the seal you mentioned?

-"theres also a seal in the front (have to drop the tranny remove clutch stuffs for that one)"

I'll give that one a try if all else fails, hopefully it is just the boot needing to be replaced.

no problem. if u say its wet around the boot its def leaking from tehre. and alot of fluid is going to come out and dry out your tranny (not good).

go to your local auto store, buy zipties and rtv silicone sealant. the zipties should tie to the very top where it meets the shifter and the very bottom where it meets this bigger cylinder thing. cut the old ones off and tie those tight. then, use the rtv sealant and seal the area where it meets the shifter. u should also get some mt fluid and fill up your tranny, as alot of fluid comes out from there. this worked for me; i got it off someone else on zilvia... it should work for you. good luck!

I just had the same problem with mine, upon closer inspection my boot is ripped on the top and bottom. Any one know who would carry the boot that is on the shifter itself that has the 2 zip ties, if not Im gonna have to convince my wife that I need to buy a B&M short shifter for myself for XMAS! :p

lol. mmm any nissan oem parts dealer should have it. i usually use www.everythingnissan.com. also, any junkyard with a s13 or s14 should have it as well. although if the rip isn't too bad, i would just put it back together with goobers of RTV silicone sealant. should be fine.

k sorry it took a while to get back to you guys. i resealed all the sensors, and even the boot. drove the car around for about 5 minutes, went back to check on the leak and it is still F**king dripping! now I have to lift the car again and from where. i thought it was the boot because thats where i saw the most oil acuumulating. I guess thats not where its from. the oil seems like its coming from that area...towards the rear of the tranny. I'll check on the rear tranny seal again but I dont think thats it because I didnt see any visable gear oil around that area. Anyways let guys know what you think.
