I have a '92 240 with Silvia front sheetmetal, first and foremost.
The hood release will not do as its name suggests. Is there any way to release the hood manually that does not require the hiring of a midget and/or trained rat?

do you know why it won't release? have you tried adjusting the hood latch?

Pull the hood release lever and then pound the hood really hard with an angry fist right above the latch...its always worked for me.

Your release spring might be broken.. put a screwdriver in a crack between your hood and bumper, push down so there is pressure. Then pull the release. The pressure should pop it up.

I'll adjust the hood latch after I get the hood open.
If it helps to know, when I pulled the release, nothing happened. No click, it just stretched. Now it has tons of play in it, like it disconnected itself.
Pounding didn't work. Neither did using a screwdriver... the tolerance between the hood and center garnish is too tight. I just really hope it doesn't fly open on my way to Clairemont tonight...

This past year, my hood latch started sticking because the grease on the latch was all gunked up. The handle did the same thing, just felt slack after I pulled it. Luckily (sort of), my bumper fits like shit, and I could get my finger in enough to pull it up. If you do get it open, try cleaning the latch real well with wd-40, and if it still doesn't work, it probably needs to be adjusted.

try pushing the lever all the way back in before pulling it back out..

raise the front end. pull the release by hand....same thing happened to me, except i ripped the cable out when i went to open my hood..now its ghetto rigged with bailing wire and a belt hook. oh well...it works
one thing that might have happened is that the lever piece broke (the part that retains the cable section in order to let it be "pulled")
mine did, i used to have to pull it really hard while simultaneously banging on the hood from the driver's seat...hehe i got long arms

all the S13's ive been in have that problem and most cases it just needs a pound on top of the latch. and for my car it always pops up when i shut my door.

Maybe the cable broke. That happenned to me with my old car, first it sorta stretched, then nothing, it just moved back and forth.

'Twas six acorns, of course!
I guess it had loosened since I last drove, and when we (a friend came over to help) tried to open the hood, it popped right away. We removed the acorns (which required two people because acorns are small, of course) and now it opens perfectly every time.
Damn you, squirrels!
