Teins: Flex or SS for a '93 vert?

My '93 vert is my wife's grocery shopper, with a few mods - intake exhaust and the biggest is the AT-> 5 speed conversion.

I'm thinking about Tein coilovers for the next step and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. Since its going to be for the wife I'm 90% sure that I am going with the Super Streets, but the guy at the shop said the Flex's had a higher spring rate.

My understanding is that the vert is alot heavier than the fastback/sedan but I didn't know by how much.

Since this car isn't going to be drift machine should I spend $300 more and go with the Flex? I don't really need the pillow ball upper mounts, nor do I want my wife to complain that the ride is crazy stiff.

So if anyone out there has experience with Tein coilovers - lemme know pls.

I know that the front brake pads are different... and I think that the stock suspension springs rates are different too - question is by how much...

i don't really understand why you want to put coilovers on a grocery getter... ? if it needs new suspension just use the stock springs and slap on some oem replacements like gr2's. save some cash.

The grocery machine is also my weekend project. My ride is a 6" lifted Bronco (I went the other way with mine :) ) so I need the wife's car for the "on road fun"

Anyone out there with some Tein info? I did a search on this forum - it doesn't seem that too many people have the newer Tein coilovers.... would love to hear any Tein comments.

well, if u got the cash to spend...

i would go with the tein flex + EDFC. it's pricey, but one of my friends here in NJ (and we got SHITTY roads in NJ) runs tein flex + EDFC. he says it's pretty passable and can even smooth on the softest setting.

on the other hand, tein's are starting to get a bad reputation... some ppl here have blown their coilovers pretty quick. undervalved, too much spring and bumpy roads = kboom. then again flex is relatively soft... not like he's. i also heard some things about rust...? totally inexcusable on a 1500 coilovers. never seen it in person though, so ask around a bit more.

Anyway, if its her grocery getter, then the higher spring rates will just make the ride much more firm. I would go ahead and just get a spring/strut combo to give it a little more sporty ride and not be so bone jarring. I like the mods done to the 'vert, got any picks of it all?

I got the "new" type FLEX. They don't seem to bother me but a lot of people that ride in my car say it's too stiff. Car guys love it, normal people hate it.
If this was your car I would say go for it. but, I have no clue how your wife feels about stiff suspensions.

actually there are a lot of Tein users on this board but not guys who have verts. At least there were 6 months ago when I was posting regularay. I don't think you need to go with the Flex b/c it has higher spring rates. Unless you just want to go really low stick with a strut/spring combo.

What you should do if your worried about spring rate.... find out the factory rates on the vert and coupe and go from there.

OK i found the factory rates on the FAQ -

Spring Rate - F : 2.0 kg/mm | 112 lbs/in (w/ sports pkg. 2.2kg/mm | 123 lbs/in)
Spring Rate - R : 2.0 kg/mm | 112 lbs/in (w/ sports pkg. 2.2kg/mm | 123 lbs/in)

I think no one knows what they are for the vert....

I was trying to find the weight difference of the vert vs the coupe/fastback and also couldn't find it on the searches...

help pls..

azn - thanks for the info. but I think consumer guide's is wrong.

some one PMed me that the weight is 3020lbs. I think that is a reasonable number.

reason being is that all the springs i have seen online RSR, Eibach, etc show the 240sx springs as (exc convertible)- so i am assuming that there is a serious weight difference. cause if it really is 2800 lbs as it says in cons guides that would make it lighter than the automatic fastback (as it says on the nissan scanned page from your first link)

anyway i'm not trying to prove you wrong, but just trying to state the facts and that consumer guide is wrong. - don't take it the wrong way - i'm not some anal shmuch who's got nothing better to do but surf the net. -just trying to get as much info to get the right coilovers for my fat ass s-13

bottom line is that i ordered the super streets - i'll take pics as i put them on, and post them when i get a chance.

lol no problem man. i dont take much personally, especially over the internat. anyway those are curb weights... 2800 would put it 3000+ with fluids etc. i'd be really surprised if the car was 3000+ curb... that would make it significantly heavier then even the s14. 3000 on a scale with fluids and grime sounds about right for any of these cars though. then again i've never actually driven (or even seen!) a s13 conv for that matter. at any rate, good luck with the SS, let us know it works out.

I am running 8/6 and only occasionally I wished it were softer...I have the KTS Betas and since I have been experimenting with dampener settings the ride has gotten MUCH MUCH better. (start soft like they say too then work up).

The land yacht ride is great for getting copilot sex ;), but now that I am married that is not on the bullet list. My car rides very well though when compared to a 1988 mustang GT and my 96 Saturn on just eibachs and GR2's....my 97 GTI VR6 may have been better if I wasn't on 205/40R17's (dunlop SP8000's)

I stomp over shitty roads though....that was my reason for going 8/6 instead of 6/4 or so. If Joe 4x4 (welcome to South Florida) is going to try and cut me off at the right turn after a railroad crossing while he waits for the light to turn green he picked the wrong guy ;)

On the pro-4x4 note, I helped my dad build a 408 cubic inch 96 Eddie Bauer Bronco (like only 300hp, but 450TQ starting at around 2000rpms at the wheels for towing his boat with) that with a modified 4EOD can spin until almost 60mph (the truck is close to 3 tons)

I've had Tein SS and HA, driven on Flex with someone elses car. They feel great, I just hate the fact that the perch gets rusty and seizes. Make sure you keep them well lubricated esp. after they get wet.
