can you weld together 2 bits of piping
(say i have a 2.5" cat outlet and i want it to go to a 2.5" resonator inlet)
rather than expanding one and clamping, can you kind of butt the two up together and weld the seam? Or is it better to expand / clamp?
thanks

but will it hold up and not break or crack or leak or anything...what i mean is is it as effective as clamp and expand?

It won't as long as a skilled person welds it. If they weld it, it'll hold very well.

More effective...!
A good weld is stronger than the tubing on either side of it.
My whole turbo-back system is butted and welded, and has held up great, even under turbo heat and abuse.

Use a pipe expander to widen the pipe facing forward towards the engine then slide the other in and weld. http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=37354
