symptoms of a bad pilot bushing? (searched)
i need to be more in depth with my situation. everyone's situation isn't always the same, hence searching doesn't necessarily clarify everything.
it's a LOUD noise coming from the rear of the engine, presumably the crankshaft. at low rpms the car would go make a clunk clunk clunk noise. when shifting to another gear, it goes claaaaack. think BOV, but a clack noise not a pshhh. my shifter does not vibrate, my clutch pedal does its regular vibration. just wondering if anyone has driven with a bad pilot bushing, and whether or not (if this is the problem) will result in major problems.
think BOV, but a clack noise not a pshhh
i threw up when i tried to compute this.

dood. it's not hard to decipher two sounds on a car. i hear it daily. yes, the car runs perfectly fine. i have my car diagnosed/logged/whatever u want to call it/ on-board with a pda and sure enough it looks normal to me. the sound is fuckin mechanical anyways
edit: ahhh... think "a bad axle" sound.
i just can't say whether or not it is the pilot bushing or a flywheel or whatever down there. sphygmomanometer sounds like the input shaft is clunking and clacking because of a bad pilot bushing. i just need to verify this situation before removing the tranny so i don't have to leave the car on jackstands longer than expected.

2 cases of what could happen.
1st, the pilot bushing is seized to the transmission which would not allow you to shift the trans when the engineis running.
2nd - warn out. Mostly when the clutch is engauged or dis-engauged there may be a clunk in the engine from play in the input shaft which will ultimately result in a bad input shaft bearing broken input shaft over time.

sorry for bringing this up, but it's the result of a search.
when in neutral and stopped, I hear a sound. it's kind of like a gear whine, but not as high pitched. When I depress my clutch pedal, it goes away. Ideas?
tranny bearings could be causing that..basically if the noise goes away when you step on the clutch it's something inside the transmission

I HAVE [driven w/ bad pilot bushin]... still am! I got it confirmed by a 20yr exp, trans specialist at Nissan Dealer [cost $150 w/o hookup]
Mine's no clack, but when I rev [in gear] to 4k+ rpm, just pushing down the clutch pedal makes a painful zzzzzzzz noise. Also, sometimes in 1st, push clutch down and gas = zzzzzzzzzzzzz, random, but the trans specialist was able to do it on command. Diagnosed as PB either disintegrated due to improper lube, or PB siezed to input shaft for same reason/misaligned due to poor install. All this means the input shaft is not rotating on straight axis and clutch is hitting pressure plate. I already know I will have to take off the trans, but since the car is perfectly driveable below 4k RPM, or whenever im in gear clutch up, I think I can put it off...
Lemme kno if u do urs, i heard removing PB is a pain... i think i PMed u about this b4 huh?

have you changed your flywheel recently?
might be loose

A pilot bearing may cause a rattle while in gear, idleing and with the clutch pedal depressed. Its main job is to support the imput shaft. A worn thrust bearing causes a clunk on deceleration and acceleration.

well I have a similar problem. I am sitting at idle and theres a sounds, kinda like a grinding. Not all the time, but intermitent with the engine rotation. Kinda like a grind, grind, grind with the engine RPS's. When I start moveing its just gets worse. When I put the clutch in it goes away which makes me think its a pilot bearing or throwout bearing or something. I purchased a clutch kit for the car (exedy stage 1) and it comes with all the bearing and bushings. I was just wondering if this would clear up the problem or not. I dont want to replace my tranny.
you dont replace your tranny until it stops working. mine's been making noise forever. your noise sounds like a trans problem

I guess, I mean it shifts smoothly so I'll replace the clutch and go from there.

Fuck take you car to a mechanic. A throw out bearing will only make noise when the clutch is depressed cause that is the only time it is being used...The pilot bearing will make a noise when the engine is idleing and in gear with the clutch depressed. This is because they are now spinning at a different RPM.
