Ok, so I've totally confused myself in the last 5 minutes.

I have, sitting next to me, the internals of an S14 VLSD. I was totally psyched about installing it later this year, maybe during summer (I dont have anywhere to work on my car right now).
So I was going through the billions of LSD threads trying to see what I'd have to use to install the S14 internals (I figured that since its just the internals I wouldnt need new output shafts, but I might need an S14's diff cover) when I realized something....
The last time I was underneath my car I took a gander at the diff and it had 6 bolts shafts coming out of it.
COnfUseD!!!
I mean, I guess I should really take another look under there...but since I bought the car used....you think it might already have an LSD installed???
:ughd:

Any way to test if I have an LSD already in there short of opening the diff?
(I know about the burnout way...but I dont really have anywhere to do a burnout.....and I dont really want to screw up my tires)

By the way, I have an S13.

Thanks.

Edit: Crap...more confused.
In the thread that you gave me, Dousan says that an open diff will (when doing the in-gear test) cause the wheels to spin in opposite directions...but in the 240sx.org FAQ's it says that WITH a VLSD the other wheel will spin in the opposite direction....
So who's right?

I AM RIGHT. trust me here. Read what I say in that thread..

I promise. I installed my diff myself, and have quite a bit of experience with it.

ALL 240SX have six-bolt output shafts from the factory... this doesn't tell you anything from the outside. I guarantee if you bought the car used and it was stock on the outside, it didn't have one swapped in.

There are all sorts of old wives tales to spot an LSD... sykikchimp knows what he's talking about, listen to him.

To install S14 internals into your pumpkin, you'll NEED VLSD output shafts. Your rear cover is fine, rear cover swaps are for swapping whole S14/Z32/J30 pumpkins into S13s.

My :mrmeph: opinion: if you can't tell by normal spirited driving if it has one or not, you don't need to install one yet.

Sheesh, you don't need to do a full-on burnout to test your diff.. Just rev up to 3000-3500 rpm, dump the clutch and scratch out for 10 feet. It won't hurt your tires that much, if you do it once. Besides, it's fun, ladies will sweat you, and your homies will think you're cooler. :2f2f:
