searched this topic...no good...so...my trans is about done...are there replacements i can turn too...the big deal i keep hearing is that you can use a KA24 Transmission and swap out the bell housing off the SR...is that true/false...because local mechanic i know swears that the KA trans/bell housing are one solid piece, which is insepperable...and if this is all possible, does anybody know the difference in gear ratio's between SR20 5speed - KA24 5speed...??? i've also heard that one of the RB transmissions could be a possible replacement...i dont remember if i was told a RB25 or RB20..well..
info would be much appreciated...thanks fellas

CA18, KA24, RB20, SR20, VG30E, all same transmission, just different bellhousings. They'll all work.

Aren't the gearing alittle different? I thought some gears were cut for NA and vice versas? I might be thinking of something else.

ummm no. gearing in 1-4 exact same. fifth gear is a little differnt but you would never notice. all this is covered in search. (fifth gear in SR is like .739 and KA is .583 or something) they are all the same. find a KA swap the guts into the SR and go about your merry way

On hard/fast/hi-rev shifts (usually 3rd to 4th), mine makes a sounds/feels like like a pencil getting snapped in half! Otherwise, it makes nice-nice with the engine.
Luckily, KA transmissions are plentiful and cheap...

Your local mechanic is like... 20% right.
The bellhousing doesn't just unbolt like the bellhousing on an old school American transmission. The bellhousing is attached to the front half of the transmission case; what you're actually swapping is the bellhousing and the front half of the transmission case.
But it can be done, it has been done plenty of times, it's just more work.
KA gearing = SR20DET gearing for most years. 0.759:1 fifth gear and all. SR20DE and CA18DET has 0.838:1 fifth.

AKADriver - are you SURE it was only the DE and the CA? I can remeber a couple people saying the DET had the differnet fifth also... i need to search...
