ok well i got a rebuilt sohc w/bout 700 mileson it, pacesetter headers with dp, gutted cat, 2.5in custom exhaust piping with n1 style tip. other mods are custom shorter intake, prot & polished head.. when i shift gears or downshift i get poping (backfires), people have told me flames come out the muffler on occasion. i havent noticed any loss in power. and was curious if this was bad or doesnt really hurt anything. thanx

do you know if the engine is running rich at all? that could be unburned fuel slipping out the exhaust and igniting on its way out. if it is that it can cause added stress on exhaust components just for the fact that its little explosions happening.

i dunno if its running rich. all i know is it eats gas like no other i filled tank today and gone like 100 miles and down to lil below half. is this normal? how can i tell if car is running rich thanx

well since u said u just got it rebuild, i would say that maybe timing is off a little.....the backfire could be cause by like... detonation in the cylinders... and the unburnt fuel.... could be a couple different things.....so get it checked out somewhere, it would cause u some bigger problems later on. oh yeah and if ur car is running rich...a good way to tell is if black smoke is coming out of ur exhaust...

ok well no black smoke actually no smoke at all just water. well do u happen to know what timing is for ka24e?

My redtop backfires like a bastard.
I've tried everything!
I checks the MAF, TPS, ignition, vacuum lines, BOV, you name it.
And it has progressively gotton worse, along with the condition of the engine. The car runs like shit sometimes and now developed a rod knock or something. I decided to just scrap the whole thing and install a new motor this spring.

...probably has a lot of build up in the motor. Usually excessive build up in the head can cause a lot of backfire.

backfiring is a GOOD THING it makes your car go faster :bowrofl:

JK anyway it sound like your spark plugs are getting a little loose tighten all of them up, everybody told me it was the timing too but it just turnred out to be my spark plugs being loose, just try it.

So it wasn't a backfire. A backfire would come out into the intake manifold. It would be a rich condition that would cause the popping out of the exhaust. At least you found it it was jst your spark plugs...

The flux capacitor failed which reverse biased the exhaust transistor and caused a short to ground which increased the Amps in the circuit resulting in unburnt fuel to ignite....

maybe you should learn how to pick up on some sarcasm and read into it as a possible means of making some humor?

well this thread is about tech not sarcasm ok :hahano:
plus he didnt emphasize he was joking on top of that.

anyway ND240sx3 did you figure out what it was? did you try what I said?
