View Full Version : My trunk does not pop-up

I have a 96 240SX and when I pull the trunk switch, it unlocks but does not pop-up.
Is all S14 like that or is there a spring that needs to be fixed?
Also, I can't open the trunk with my key but the key works for everything else even the grove box.
Thanks for any info.

Looks like your trunk was replaced. Mine doesn't even unlock anymore.

um on my 95, i started getting that problem with the key not working.. but i think the lock is just frozen or w/e for not being used, cus i managed to get the trunk open with the key but just turning it back and fourth a few times.

Yeah I guess it must have been replaced.
Now about not popping up, what's wrong?
Does ur trunk pop-up when you pull the lever?
Mine does not pop-up and key does not work so I need another person pulling up the trunk while i'm pulling the lever.
I'm ordering trunk solenoid to connect it my alarm's 2nd channel.

Unfortunately on the S14 there are no springs underneath the trunk deck.
There should be two metal rods that run underneath the rear speaker deck that connect to the trunk arms. Check to see if the plastic tabs on those metal rods have come loose or fallen off. I think those plastic tabs act as tensioners for the metal rod. It helps pop open your trunk when you pull the trunk release handle. Now if you added a heavier spoiler to the trunk than your stock SE spoiler, the additional weight of the heavier spoiler will prevent your trunk from popping up.
As for your trunk key not working. Two things, 1). either it's dirty and needs to be cleaned out/lubricated or 2). the metal rod which connects to the lock mechanism may have come off. Take a can of silicone spray & stick the nozzle tube inside the key mechanism to the trunk lock & spray away. Once you are done spraying, then take your key, insert it & turn it left & right several times. It should help "unstick" the lock provided the metal rod on the back is still connected.
Anyhow, I hope this helps..

D'OH!! :duh:
Just reread your post, check the latch mechanism!! If you stand directly behind your car & look down into the trunk latch mechanism, you should see a small "L" or "T" type bracket that slide up & down. Press it or pull it so that it is either completely up or completely down...not stuck in the middle. Not sure what direction you're supposed to have it, (up or down), but once you get it completely in the right direction, your trunk release latch will work perfectly.

The plastic tab that fits between the torsion springs is just an insulator, it serves no purpose to assist in lifting the trunk. If you take it off you'll hear the springs rattling together.

I know this is OT.. But since you guys were talking about trunk "springs". On my 98 accord, I installed 6x9s with a huge magnet that rubbed against the bars. So I went to kragen to pick up a pair of hydraulic shocks.

It pops all the way open when I pop the trunk, prett bad ass. Unless you don't want it to open all the way.

Your problem is simple. Adjust the trunk latch by loosening the two bolts holding it tight....then move it down about 1/4 inch or so and re-tighten the bolts. Then retry the trunk lever. Continue to move the turnk latch down 1/4 inch until it does work.

If that doesn't solve your problem.....you're fucked!! :)

J/K that should be it.

First remove tension springs.. ::::caution:::: can be dangerous, make sure you have someone hold the trunk while you remove the springs, cause the trunk is heavier than you think it is.

I did that on my accord so the mounting places can be different. But there was a pre-drilled hole in the trunk hinge, so I drilled it out bigger to fit in a bolt and nut. Next find a place to mount the shock, and from there it's pretty much trial and error. The shock is VERY STRONG so don't expect it to be easily compressed. Just make sure you purchase the shortest shock you can find, there were shorter ones but there were sold out. They go for about $20 each.

It took about two hours, looks easy, but it's not. If you do it faster..then more power to you.

As a note, DO NOT spray silicone into your lock mechanism. Use graphite lock fluid. Silicone will attract dirt/dust and your lock will be even more difficult to operate.

GamblerZ is right, use graphite lube in the cylinder. silicone will mess it up more. you can use graphite lube on your power antenae too. clean it real good and rub the graphite on it! peace

You don't have to take apart anything, it is that little sliding thing. I had the same problem. The lever and the key are two separate devices, even if the keyhole doesn't work, the lever should open it anyway. I had the same problem. Just look at it and you can figure it out.

I seem to recall that it is on the trunk door, not the in on the car. I had to do it from inside the trunk, though, so it could be on either one.

My hatch is having the same issue. I guess I'll have to try what you suggested when I get a chance.

For those of you who failed to notice...

Take a closer look at when this thread was started. The only new question here is how to reinstall the spring bars. Everything else was figured out 2 YEARS AGO.
