When it comes to engine rebuilding, do you think It would be better to have it done by a pro or is it something that can be done yourself and done right?

BTW in a engine rebuild, besides the obvious gasket changes, what else is changed, im sure i would opt for Forged pistons and stronger arms but any info on the process or links would be helpful.... thanks

Oh and about how long would it take for a shop to rebuild compared to a person or a couple people working a few hours 2-3hr max a day on it?

And do most shops provide somekind of warranty on engines they rebuilt and or would they install parts you provide them IE Forged pistons and aftermarket headers?

Thanks!

do it ur self....so u can learn more about cars...also u save on $ to get better parts...a good manual will tell u all the torque specs u need

No offense, but if you have to be asking that question, then get it done by a shop. All the gaskets, seals, and bearings (the stuff that corrodes the easiest) is technically all that is required in an engine rebuild. Once you get into replacing the Pistons, rods, cams, and valves & springs (although valves and valve springs could be done in a regular rebuild), you really are starting to get into building your own engine like tuners such as JUN and Tomei do.
It would take you a good long while to get the engine done if you were only going to spend about 2-3 hours a day on it, whereas a shop could get it done anywhere from 2 to 5 days (depending on how busy they are). What engine do you plan on rebuilding? Why not go SR or CA instead?

1992 240sx Fastback

So i believe its KA24 something right?

well i want to make the engine stronger to run NOS or consider throwing a super charger on it, ive been reading up alot about it... its not a matter of not knowing how to do it.... rather never dont it and not knowing where to start on the project!
I mean if i can buy a book that will tell me how to do it then thats not a problem, if i cant follow instructions then i should not even own a car to begin with correct? But im just considering my options for this winter coming up when after I have the car for a summer and save all my money to dump into it durinfg its down time in the winter.....

A factory service manual should tell you all you need to know on how to rebuild an engine. The details are great, and I agree about your statement about following directions! ; )
Unless you plan on not driving until the spring, then save your mods for the spring time. It sucks to have more power in the winter because then you have to deal with snow and all of that crap and getting used to the increase in power. Besides, if you wait until spring, then you can get even more mods! : ) When do you plan on getting the car? Welcome to our world!

First... Thanks for agreeing with me, second here is my plan
Shortly after I sell the car I have no I will have roughly enough for this 92 SE Fastback I found for sale.... Im going to work all summer and keep my car stock execpt for my CD player..... with all the money i saved all summer after I buy what i need for myself for school in the fall, I will dump into the car when I take it off the road for the winter.... when its off the road I wont have to pay for the insurance obvioulsly so what little money I can make while im in school working part time can go towards the car, then I will pull the engine, rebuild, add the parts that I want, Headers, cam gears, intake, and the rest of the usual suspects, order and install the body kit i want from Bomex along with a nice looking deck spoiler they make.... get rims and tires ready and being to finish off audio and other minor cosmetic stuff.... then when it warms up around this time next year, get it re painted and throw on the rims.....
I want to keep it Clean and nice looking yet have it extremely effective.... depending on how much I can muster in the summer or scam from parents a turbo set up might be a consideration during the down time.....

Thats the basic plan....

Sounds like a good plan. You are much braver than I am if you are going to install the body kit yourself, that's one area of the car that I want absolutely nothing to do with! Of course, that could be because I want it molded on and yadi yada, but still, props to you if you can do it!!! I only plan on helping with the engine install, but after that, I plan on doing most of the work myslef (once I break down and buy the FSM for the SR20 that is).
I love your avatar by the way!

Well my brother is the bodykit hero when it comes to installing... he was down with that stuff when he got his first car way back in 1990 LOL.... it was brand new..... Audi, ugly by todays standards but it flew!
Ya my avitar is pretty slick now that you mention it!
BTW where are you from?

i have a chiltons for the 89-92 240.....the engine rebuild section i've carefully looked over (cause i plan on doing that to a ka dohc that i'm gonna drop in my 89) and it's seems pretty thurough to me.....of course all i've seen is just the chiltons, i'm searching for a factory service manual right now but its a real bitch on tracking down...courtesy nissan down the street said that i would have to contact nissan publishing or somethign like that cause that's a whole separate division from the dealer or parts division for that matter so i'm expecting a great pain in the ass to get it

That's awesome that your bro is into it also, Fresh 240SX. I live in Northern VA, if you're ever near D.C. I see that you are from New York, judging from the Niagra comment.

Fresh 240SX, you could check E-bay and yahoo auctions for the FSM for your car. Also, any Nissan dealership should be able to get one for you.
