Overheating Problem

Hey guys,

First time using these forums so I figured I'd give it a shot. I just rebuilt a 95 S14 ka24de, and I've encountered some problems. I took the t stat out today and replaced it yet I keep encountering an overheating problem. I dropped both in a boiling pot and they were opening just fine. When I had the new t stat in my top radiator hose was getting heat but the bottom hose was cold as a cucumber. I took the t stat out and ran it without one to see if the water pump and radiator were circulating correctly, which they were, and both radiator hoses were hot. I drove the car around for like 30 minutes then smoke started coming from the coolant overflow cause it was boiling like hell. I'm kinda stuck on the whole t stat situation but I think it started overheating cause there was still an air pocket in the system. What do yall think?

How did you bleed it?

I drove it up on a hill and pulled the radiator cap with the bleeder plug on the intake, and pushed water through the radiator with a hose. I was squeezing the top radiator hose while doin this as well, soon as I saw it turn into a stream of water coming out the bleeder, I turned the car off and put the bleeder back in (with heat on full blast). Idled it with the cap off for about 10 minutes and thought everything was fine. No point in adding coolant just because of how many times I've had to bleed it.

Cars not boosted either I'm running an NA setup.

Sounds like an air pocket at the t-stat housing.

Did u cut/remove the jingle valve from the new t-stat? I find that helps coolant flow/bleedinging while the thermostat is still closed.

Naw I haven't yet I was gonna take some snips and cut it off, I'll have to try that tomorrow and see. The motors now shaking like a mother and idling high at 1k rpms, when I put it in first it bout wants to stall out on me. I don't know whether it's because the t stat is out or somethings up with the mass airflow sensor because I had to fix that signal wire today.

Tstat in or out will not effect idle or motor "shaking" sounds like a separate problem.

Yeah theres an ever so slight misfire.

Gotcha I’ll have to take a look into it today and get back to you, I drove it trying to get it home yesterday when it was boilin so hopefully nothing got damaged.

Been quite a minute since I've posted on here, figured I'd get back to anyone in case they were wondering. Since the last post, I've had to pull the head off because the shaking was a blown head gasket, had chocolate milk in my oil pan, I drove like a dummy back to the house instead of just pulling over. I'm cutting the jiggle valve off the t stat just incase, dumped it in a boiling pot and it opened up. I think the misfire problem will be fixed after I replace the distributor cap, rotor button, and spark plugs with new wires. After I get everything back together Ima get my uncle to bring his machine to pull all the air out of the system and hopefully that solves all my issues for now.

Finishing this forum for those who might come across the problems I've encountered. I finally was able to bleed the car again and I took it out on the road tonight with no overheating and misfire. The fan clutch was my culprit all along for the overheating problem, and a new distributor cap, rotor button, and set of spark plugs with wires solved the misfire. Hope this will be able to help someone!
