View Full Version : Keep it Simple, Stupid... S13 Coupe Drift Turd

Man, I though I was done with S13's when I sold my last coupe, but I just cannot escape these damn cars... This car has been passed around between a few of my buddies and finally made its way to me, I figured I'd do it a solid and give it a chance to be useful again. I've been really interested in trying out drifting, seems like a great time and I hope this car lets me experience it.

Car was picked up with a blown KA under the hood and obvious signs it had been drifted prior and returned to a stockish form. First order was to strip the thing and get rid of the interior that was rotting away, windows wouldn't roll up so it was a disaster.

https://i.imgur.com/qrdDmBPh.jpg

KA was ripped out and thrown away, my buddy had his entire SR swap stolen by a local shop and decided to give up on the car which really sucked. I stored the car for about a year until another buddy of mine decided he was interested in putting the shell to good use. We found a Kouki SR20DE on eBay for cheap and decided to keep it simple. Engine was super clean inside, we resealed it and threw it in.

Car would not pass emissions once swapped, we had a ton of issues with getting the SR to run right and it sat for another year and a half in a sad state. I decided to buy it and finish the car up, I wanted to keep it simple, yet capable, didn't really go as plan...

I am what would be considered a hoarder of parts I had no use for, this car fell into my lap and made a whole heap of parts useful again. Front of the car got S14 LCA's, S14 Knuckles, S14 5 lug, GKTech RCC, GKTech outer tie rods, GKTech tension rods, ES LCA bushings, Moog ball joints, S14 Cusco coilovers, R32 calipers/rotors and a pair of 17x8 Work Equip Voggards. Almost completely refreshed the front suspension putting all of this onto the car and added a decent bit of angle. I need some smaller front tires, but overall I'm pretty happy with the outcome.

Rear suspension was in complete disarray, pulled it all apart and found the car already had solid subframe bushings, but needed every other bushing replaced. Replaced all of the bushings with an ES kit I had laying around from my last S13, what a pain in the ass. Threw on GKTech arms, Z32 5 lug hubs, Z32 calipers, Z32 Ebrake, Z32 VLSD w/ S13 VLSD cover, S13 5 bolt axles, Moog ball joints, and a pair of 17x9 Work Equip Voggard's. I'll never had to worry about breaking an axle and with all new arms/bushings the rear alignment will be perfect. Wheels are super sunk due to them being high offset, but I have something in the works to make it look the part :yum:

As of today it finally runs properly and is driveable. Its taken way to long to get to this point, but I'm pretty happy with the outcome. Interior got a Tomei Steering wheel and a Shirtstuckedin shifter along with a new to me center console and OMORI oil pressure gauge. Will be getting an alignment this week and a good inside/outside cleaning. Super excited for the next drift event and to see what this turd will do! In the meantime here is how it sits as of this afternoon, I have some more things planned for the exterior that should shape up soon :D

Didn't realize this thread got approved, sorry mods for trying to make another thread :duh: Anyway, here is a little update!

Rear coilovers were eBay trash, decided if I am really going to enjoy this thing it needed proper coilovers so I opted for some Powertrix R/T. I run these on my Z32 and have ran them on previous Z32's I've owned loving every set. These go even lower and gave me the rear ride height I wanted. Still need to get the fronts installed, but they need some work to fit the S14 knuckles.

The stripped interior of this car doesn't really bother me other than the doors. Stripped door panels look and feel awful, saw Street Faction's new V2 door cards a while back and decided to grab a pair. Fit and finish is great and they really help to make the interior look and feel more comfortable.

https://i.imgur.com/y1cCl8ch.jpg

A while back I picked up a set of 17x8 +4 Equip 05's, they sat for a few months until I got the motivation to clean up a pair. Some powder coating and polishing later and they look insanely good. Super stoked on the sizing, since I've low power these fill the rear quarters well and let me run a 215.

Dang, maybe I should make a build thread for my white hatch when it's drivable agian lol. Hope to see you this weekend ;)

Was great meeting you yesterday car looked awesome and you were killing it! Tried to come say hi earlier, but you seemed to spend most of the evening on track ahaha.

I wasn't able to take my car out Saturday, I was having issues with one RUCA being loose regardless of how I set it up, was not interested in it ripping apart so I sat the event out. Still had a great time hanging out, will get the car 100% for next months event and finally see how it holds up.

https://i.imgur.com/uPDBdpEh.jpg

Met up with a friend at the track and picked up a really cool shifter for the car. I'm a sucker for cool JDM stuff so this Mines Direct Shift Pro will be a great addition, was super excited to see the Mines bag it was in too. Will be topping it off with a ShirtsTuckedIn knob to add some more flair

https://i.imgur.com/mOt3k7lh.jpg

I also noticed the car has horrible wheel hop, not sure why considering its got brand new coils, solid subframe bushings, refreshed LCA's and all new arms. If anyone has an idea on what I could change up to help I'm all ears, current alignment in the rear has it sitting at 0* of camber and I'm running a 215/45r17 Federal 595SS.

Before I go all out on the Z32 I wanted to get the S13 sorted and to a point where I can step back and say "That'll do"

I missed the last drift event because of some issues I was having with my RUCA's. The GKTech arms simply were not long enough to allow the car to be properly aligned, the adjusters were too far extended and would not properly tighten. Last thing I wanted was for a RUCA to snap so I picked up some PBM RUCA's. These things are super beefy compared to the GK stuff and do not have any coilover clearance issues like the GK arms. I also threw some helper springs on my rear coils which seemed to soften the rear up a bit.

https://i.imgur.com/sbSNeRuh.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/22JwJ1Th.jpg

The car has also been leaking PS fluid ever since I got it running, I was going back and forth trying to decide to leave it or replace the rack, but the car pushed my hand when it completely blew out one of the seals after I parked it. Threw a new rack with some ES bushings in, one more issue checked off the list!

https://i.imgur.com/BluvRtdh.jpg

My last post I talked about a Mines shifter I grabbed for the car, turned out its for an RB25 so it wasn't going to work. Ordered up a Nismo 32839-RN540 shifter off YAJ and finally I have nice shifter feel, topped it off with a ShirtsTuckedIn knob for some flair :yum:

I've wanted a kitted S13 coupe for as long as I can remember, finally decided to do it. Unfortunately I was only able to get a bumper and skirts for the time being, but it'll be complete soon. Pretty happy with the fit and the primer white doesn't look bad just throw on, needs some more finishing work, but it'll do for now and I won't feel bad if I break it. Also tossed in some clear/red tails to get rid of the faded stock lights. I just need some corner lights and fender markers to finish the front off.

Took the car out last night for the first time and had a great time. Car has good angle, drivetrain is solid, but it does have some issues that need to be addressed.

Main issue is grip, the car simply has too much rear grip for this DE SR. I'm running a 215/45r17 595SS with 0* camber and 1/8in toe in out back. Started at 35psi, moved to 50psi and ended the night at 60psi, adding tire pressure helped, but still wasn't enough to overcome the mechanical grip. Low speed stuff was not an issue, I could toss the rear out and hold angle for a single corner. Once I was trying to run the actual laid out track it was a different story, if I was able to break traction I'd have to stay deep in throttle to keep the car from gripping back up and I'd end up coming out of the corner waaaayyy too fast with no gear/rpm left to transition. The car would snap back and I'd end up backwards or doing a full 360.

https://i.imgur.com/qNtpB6Ih.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/iIIwZLeh.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/rNJdRX2h.jpg

Before the event I threw some e-fans and a shroud on the car that I got from a friend. I don't have the stock fan shroud so I figured some e-fans with a shroud would be a better solution for the time being, but it didn't really work out. Car was getting pretty hot during the day, pulled the hood off and it didn't really help. Going to rip the cheap fans off and throw some quality ones on before the next event which should remedy this.

https://i.imgur.com/mn9M617h.jpg

Night ended with me kissing a stack of tires and exploding my front bumper. I had noticed my drivers front tire was contacting the inner fender a full lock causing it to bind up. I was still driving because I didn't feel like messing with the caster and it ended up being a mistake. Last run I threw the car into the last corner, deep clutch kick and it snapped to full lock. I was too close to the inside, car basically pivoted 90** on the front left tire and drove straight into a tire stack  Bumper exploded, core support bent back a bit and cracked a headlight bezel. Toe strap, a friends truck and reverse got it back pretty straight, I'll have to pull the headlight and access the damage this week.

https://i.imgur.com/YRkrDaeh.jpg

Overall had a great time, not even mad about what happened. Super happy I was able to drive as much as I did and can't wait to address the issues the car has and get back out driving!

Event two went really well! Car did great again and changing up a few things really helped.

https://i.imgur.com/AVAHURah.jpg

The E-Fan setup that was on the car was not going to cut it, after battling over heating issues I decided to buy a pair of quality fans. I'm not a huge fan of Mishimoto products, but these fans were cheap and I figured I'd give them a shot. Swapped the two junk 11in fans for some 12in Mishi race fans and had absolutely zero issues basically hot lapping at one point!

https://i.imgur.com/UKbwKzTh.jpg

Swapped from the 595SS I was running on the rear to some 215/45r17 Braum tires I snagged from Discount last minute. Threw them on some 17x9 CR Kai's and they were awesome. It was way easier to toss the rear end out and basically got rid of the super aggressive snapping from lock to lock leading to me spin 90% of the time I actually got the rear out. Still need less grip, the little SR has some trouble keeping these spinning with the aggressive alignment.

https://i.imgur.com/zUZ8VAVh.jpg

Overall night went really well, had a great time with friends and figuring out how to more properly drive the car. Night ended with me spinning, trying to grab second as I pulled off the track and my shift knob exploding :ugh: I
reached out to the ShirtsTuckedIn guys and they said they'd get me a new one sent out!

https://i.imgur.com/Jhj8a8eh.jpg

Car set back out in its resting place, I have some plans to make the car a lot more fun and stylish soon :naughty:

NEW KIT IS HERE!!! :hsdance:

Wasn't able to get my hands on another DMax Type 3 style kit so I got this cheap URAS Type 4 kit to run for the time being.

https://i.imgur.com/CuDwunMh.jpg

My S13 bumper support got annihilated when smacked the tires at my first event, grabbed a Type X bumper support to get this new kit on. Also got some Type X marker lights, smashed on of mine forever ago and it was pissing me off having an open hole in my fender. Really like the look of these, kinda pisses me off Nissan used different sockets/connectors on each of them though...

https://i.imgur.com/faxj9nsh.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/cuGckZRh.jpg

Kit fit like absolute shit, as to be expected from cheap rep fiberglass. Grabbed a die grinder and angle grinder and got to work hacking it up. After about two hours of grinding, cutting and test fitting it fits okay. Really like the overall look, make a huge difference having a rear bumper on the car too. A friend gave me an Origin roof spoiler for the car too, kinda dig the look with the OEM trunk spoiler.

Front of the car needs to come down a bit to match the rear, but I'm going to have to chop the tubs out before I can make that happen. Hopefully I can find some paint and get the kit to kinda match the rest of the car this next weekend!

The DE is cool, but man its slow. I was trying to decide between throwing a 4.9 final drive in and leaving it alone or going turbo, turbo just seems like it'll end up being a lot more fun to drive. Plan for now is to use all of the parts I have laying around, PFC, DET harness, DET CAS, 740cc injectors, Z32 MAF, T25 etc to make a super responsive setup that'll be a blast to drive and hopefully reliable.

The car is all "White" again, pretty happy with how it came out for some rattle can. Really wanted to roll it out into the sun, but the damn battery is dead so I'll get some better pictures later.

I love the build man. Turbo will definitely be cool and be pretty responsive with the higher compression on the na motor as long as the tune is okay on it. You sound like me talking about my car being slow haha I drive a single cam ka with stock rear, 215/40s probably 50 psi cold depending on track surface and temp. But it?s relatively torquey for what it is. Contemplating chucking a 4.3 rear in it. I?ve done a pretty big oval track with it and it was fine but you are entering at probably 45-50 mph so you have a lot more momentum to kinda keep the car loose vs gripping up.

Can?t wait to see the progress! Remember to keep your foot down :)

Sweet! I am actually doing the same, but I will be using the DE harness and Distributor (s14 sr20de). I ran my car with a 4.6 final and it definitely made it alot better to stomach. But I am having to run 215/40's @ 60psi to make it work. DE is a torquless wonder.

With the slight compression bump of the DE internals I really think you should spring for a t28 from the get-go, it will be just as responsive as a t25 and have more head room. The t25 falls off so hard above 6k.

So on top of everything I'm going to have it running ethanol, we've got regulated E54 from the pump out here so it makes it really easy to have the car tuned and not worry about content changes. I've seen great results from E54 on my daily so I figure I'll give it a try.

The last event I was going faster and faster with entries, but I just couldn't keep the rear out or I'd end up backwards because of the grip level the car has. The alignment feels good, its super controllable at low speed, but there is just too much grip and not enough power to properly run any actual layout.

Sweet! I am actually doing the same, but I will be using the DE harness and Distributor (s14 sr20de). I ran my car with a 4.6 final and it definitely made it alot better to stomach. But I am having to run 215/40's @ 60psi to make it work. DE is a torquless wonder.

Torqueless wonder is beyond accurate. The final corner of the layout we've had recently was somewhat slow, big flick, bit of hand brake and a clutch kick would get the rear out no problem, but keeping the tires spinning was another story. I think I was running around 40psi on some all seasons and about half way through the corner it was struggling to keep wheel speed. I was trying to clutch kick again mid corner, but it would grip up and I'd end up backwards

I think throwing in the 4.9 I have would have helped a ton, but since I'm driving to each event its not ideal for the freeway. Only positive to still having a 4.11 is I could cruise at 80mph no prob from my house to the track. With the 4.6, where do you sit in the RPM range around 65-70mph?

I agree, I should just go T28 and call it a day, but I think a T25 will be just fine for a bit. I have some JWT S4 cams to throw in when I do the turbo, even if the turbo is falling off up top the cams should help a bit. I'm hoping for around 250whp with a very useable midrange.

If it ends up being lame I'll probably grab an S15 T28 and see what happens.

Its been a bit since I've had the 4.6 in the car, but I think I was around 3.5-4k at about 70-75mph. It's a bit higher than the 4.08 but not unbearable. I was also running a oem exhaust so it was nice and quiet, aside from the diff howling due to uneven wear / backlash.

Def want to try a new gearset out but I'm going to finish up the turbo kit and see how the car feels with the 4.08 that's in it now.

I'll for sure keep this thread updated with how it goes, I'm really curious how the DE will hold up to abuse boosted on ethanol.

Oh that doesn't seem bad at, this car had a 4.9 in it before I swapped to the 5 bolt rear stuff, it was sitting at around 5k at 65 if I remember correctly, was absolutely awful on the highway.

Little update, local drift events are back on beginning of next month so its time to prep!

Finally got the kit actually mounted up and rolled the car out into the sun. For what is is, I'm pretty happy with how it looks. One of these days I'll get the entire car re-painted with a higher quality kit. Also dropped the rear back down a bit, somehow my tire is rubbing on the fender, quality pull job by the PO of this chassis :duh:

https://i.imgur.com/gmNxep4h.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/rc1u8Boh.jpg

Went back out to bring the car home and it wouldn't start, scratched my head and checked everything. Ended up looking up under the dash and finding the clutch safety switch connector with a piece of speaker wire jumping the terminals... Can't believe the car ran for as long as it did before this gave me an issue, again thanks PO of this chassis.

https://i.imgur.com/jo4ew3yh.jpg

I also got around to getting the cams in the car, install went smoothly. I was told these are JWT S4's, but they don't chop at idle like S4's, not sure if thats because the DE ECU seems a bit unhappy or if I got duped, regardless it sounds prettey sick.

Once the DET electronics go in, I'm going to clean up the bay and add some bling. Friend of mine made these super nice coil pack covers and I had to have one for this, if you want one check out his IG @boostinjoostin

Lastly, got some more goodies, nothing planned for this stuff right away, but hopefully by the end of summer this car will be a lot different than it is today ;)

So I picked up a 4.6 ring and pinion set for the car and went to install it Friday. Got the Z32 VLSD out, tore it apart and found the Z32 pumpkin uses a larger inner pinion bearing  Tried pulling the bearing off the Z pinion to no avail and ended up having to go buy an S13 differential. 3 days later the diff is back together and in the car, it whines a bit so I'm sure the backlash isn't correct, but I'm just going to run it.

After I did the cams I checked timing and found the mark someone else left on the distributor was at 10* BTDC. Got it back to 15* and the car has a whole lot more pep. Along with the new gearing its a completely changed car!

While the car was in the air I taped one of the new overs on it and threw a Panasport on. Really love the look of the Type 3 fenders, going to re-lip these from 17x9 (3in lip) to 17x10.5 (4.5in lip)

Thanks man! I love how simple the setup is, if I had left stock brakes, 4 lug and picked up some 15in wheels going for a "Dorisha", stock body aesthetic, it would probably stay N/A. Since the quarter panels are smashed I kinda got away from that style.

For the style I am wanting, with the parts on the car, it just doesn't really do it for me. I can't justify paying for a tune to run my PFC just to make a whopping 150whp and still have to run a super small wheel for drifting.

This thing is pretty neat dude. Love the Panasports.

Its getting there! I almost sold the Pana's, but I'm glad I kept them, they will fit the car so well once the overs go on and they are re-lipped to fit!

In other news, I finally got my hands on a PBM intercooler, core support is already cut and the short piping is something I really like about this kit. Should be fun to see what the DE does with a GT2530 on E85 :hsdance:

Give me some input guys, to turbo or not to turbo? My main goal with this car is seat time and longevity.

I dug out all of my parts I have been hoarding to throw a turbo on the DE SR today and realized I basically just need fittings and some time to make it happen. PFC, DET harness, CAS, coils, turbo, maf, manifold, downpipe, injectors, intercooler, etc.

https://i.imgur.com/TISqziFh.jpg

If I do it, its not going to be half ass thrown together, it'll be proper, I just worry about the longevity of the setup. With SR's getting so expensive, is it worth stressing this poor DE until it lets go and being left with a hunk of useless parts?

As a hoarder, I do have a good bare DET block and some other goodies just sitting around. I could easily tear the DE down, pull the good crank and build a forged 86.5 bottom end that would take the abuse. Would keep it all simple, I don't want another endeavor like my Z...

https://i.imgur.com/5PK5WQlh.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/pagAb8Rh.jpg

Other option would be to drop in the S14 DE I've been sitting on for a while now. Would give me a little bump in whp and should be extremely reliable as the engine is beautifully clean inside. Instead of spending time and money building an engine (or replacing one I blow up), I could get all of my aero/wheels sorted and paint the turd.

Fuck, I kinda hate owning multiple project cars

I vouch for na. ONLY because it?ll be a bit less of a headache and money And you can still learn to drive well with it. Yes power can be a limiting factor in driving, but I?ve seen Multiple people Drive grange in a stock ka car fine. It?s about skill, and knowing how to work the car/clutch When you have low power. That?s what makes it fun to me. Now this is JUST MY OWN opinion lol I?m a stickler for what seems to work easiest. So take that for what you will. Many will disagree because anything turbo seems to be better to a lot of people on here which 100% okay. Ultimately it depends on what you want to do with car. I drive with a single cam ka and people seem to be suprised that I drift it with so little power they all think it?s boosted for some reason. I had 18x10s at one point on it. I also have a friend who drifts a na sr with a 4.9 rear and he seems to love it. Keep it simple man and have fun

Plenty of compromises to either, like Fugly is saying.

Track only car? 4.9 diff and NA will get you a lot of fun for little money.

A car that sees the street is gonna be real annoying on a 4.9.

NA with stock rear end is boring imho. You have to run small or low grip or a ton of pressure in your tires and while it's fun for a bit, it gets kind of old. Trying to do high-speed stuff with that kind of setup gets sketchy.

The more I think it over the more I want to leave it N/A and just focus on driving. If guys in Japan can set a car up to absolutely shred with a DE SR, no reason I couldn't especially if its reliable enough to make it event after event without issue.

A friend of mine used to kill it with a KA on some wide Cerb's and a stock rear end. He's got an SR20DET in the car now and drives better than most at our local events.

Plenty of compromises to either, like Fugly is saying.

I hate the idea of compromises, but slapping a turbo on a DE is kind of a compromise in itself.

With the 4.6 it seems to be fine on the street, its kind of obnoxious at higher speeds, but that is probably more due to the fact that I have spent zero time trying to make it a decent street car. Fast entries seem like a blast, out track is really basic so there really isn't much I can smash into if something goes wrong.

Thank for the input guys, guess its time to pull the S13 SR and get the S14 SR out of my shell prepped for the swap.

No problem man! The cool thing is too is that you have options haha so if you say man I want more power you already have a majority of what you need or maybe access to resources to get you what you want. I just think it?s easier to skip over trying to learn in a ?slow? car over here and just immediately go to a different power plant. A lot of my friends are actually great drivers but have faster cars then me and but they?ve never driven a slow ka car so It would be interesting to see. Got some more fiberglass goodies for the car and mocked the front end up over the weekend. Needs some fit and finish to wrap it all up, but overall pretty happy with the fitment and look paired together with the URAS rep kit. Now I need to chop my rear quarters, mount the matching rears and throw the Panasports on to get an idea of how its going to look complete.

Once it is together I'm going to try my hand at properly painting the car, the car was repainted at some point and the paint is pretty rough overall plus white is boring as hell. Thinking OEM two tone scheme, silver on grey, to mimic my old two tone that I really wish I hadn't sold.

Reached out and met an old woman who had been keeping it behind her house in a storage unit for someone who just never came back for it. Thanks dudes! I think the RG's will end up being on this car more than the Z, just not sure how they are going to fit right now with 265's and the angle mods at the current ride height :wtc:

So, I dug into the SR a bit tonight. I'm overall pretty happy with the purchase, its pretty clean overall. It does look like someone was running straight water through it, its going to need to be thoroughly flushed out and it needs a water pump for sure.

https://i.imgur.com/fbF57Bdh.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/3dyEVJ9h.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/3cYbBDfh.jpg

Flipped it over and pulled the pan to find no oil pickup and the lower pan being held on by 2 bolts total :faint: I was told this engine was never in a US chassis so hopefully it was just purchased from an importer with a damaged pan and the new owner never actually fixed it before storing it away. With the pan off you can see how clean the engine really us, hopefully it runs a nice as it looks...

Also grabbed another torn down SR, putting my current total at 5 and a half. If this engine ends up being a dud, I'm going to build a basic bottom end and slap this head on it. Its a very clean block inside, near perfect crank and came with all new timing components.

Got a few things done today.

First up was figuring out what the hell is was going on with the turbo oil feed. I posted another thread asking for input on the turbo oil feed, the outlet from the oil passage was tiny compared to the other block I have and 4 others I had friends check. I never managed to extract anything from it, but I was able to open the hole up and put a helicoil in it. Should do the trick.

https://i.imgur.com/wOLqRq0h.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/dWurN0Dh.jpg

Went around the engine and threw a set of Mazworx exhaust studs in, I really liked them on my Z so I figured this engine should get a set too.

https://i.imgur.com/RUrXh1Xh.jpg

Cleaned up and re-sealed the thermostat housing, cylinder head water neck, and coolant tubes. Picked up some fresh hoses to replace all of the rotten OEM stuff and installed a new OEM thermostat. The water pump that came off this engine was trashed and from Nissan they are backordered. Thankfully I hoard parts and had a lightly used S13 pump sitting around.

https://i.imgur.com/kut0cqIh.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/Djtc1agh.jpg

With the oil pan back on its starting to look complete again, also took the ISR S14 style water neck off the Z and put it on this engine, much prefer to return coolant from the turbo back to the neck instead of trying to route it behind the engine. Bolted the HKS GT2540 up on the stock manifold for now, I want to get a different manifold, but I'm not sure what I want just yet.

https://i.imgur.com/LqL2oL1h.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/ae45cu2h.jpg

Engine is mostly back together, need some seals, clamps and other little things to get it drop in ready. Also decided to drill out the throttle body coolant tubes, for sure doing this to the Z as well, makes it look way better.

https://i.imgur.com/HJBOAFJh.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/q3BHiByh.jpg

Took some time to try and make the front fiberglass aero fit. The Fineline fenders fit like absolute poop, but some heat and ingenuity (Clamps and weight) I got the fender to sit flatter and the fender to hood gap closed up nicely.

https://i.imgur.com/H8IvcGxh.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/qmY860ah.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/PpwkSwNh.jpg

On the inside I got a carpet kit for the car, I can't do the completely stripped interior, it is just miserable. Carpet is from Stock Interiors and fits okay, ended up just cutting it in half to lay it, going to lay some new sound deadening down then carpet tape it down. Also decided to re-do the battery re-location wiring. It was done originally in car audio wire and I didn't like how it was run. I got some sweet little zip ties that have clips on them, drilled a few holes and routed the positive down the passenger side. Also installed a 150a Bussman breaker in the trunk for peace of mind.

Saturday off well spent working on this hunk of junk.

Got the turbo oil and coolant lines sorted to start the day, decided to give push lock fittings a shot. So much easier to assemble for these dumb little things and still look fantastic. Kinda wish I ordered a different fitting for the inlet on the turbo to avoid the long downward run, but it should be out of the way and do the trick.

Got to work chopping up my rear quarters finally. I've never done this before and it took me some time to figure out how I wanted to go about it. Finally decided I'd find the center of the arch and draw the new arch from there.

https://i.imgur.com/K2Gk4OVh.jpg

The initial cut looked good so I cut the outer lip off and got to hammering away. Gap was a pain in the ass to close up, but with enough persistence and disregard to my forearms cramping up I got it pretty close.

https://i.imgur.com/DbtwXYth.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/c8xWXHRh.jpg

Now to preface this, I've never welded anything and only have a cheapo harbor garbage welder I borrowed to make this happen. With that said, I think it came out pretty damn good. Still needs a coat of paint and maybe some sealant, but overall happy with it.

https://i.imgur.com/y1TCbcXh.jpg

Grabbed an over, taped it on and stepped back to enjoy the new look. Threw a 20mm spacer on to flush up the 18x10 +25 RG.

Spent some time cleaning up the engine today, couldn't deal with dropping it in all dirty. Looks a million times better, there was some serious shit caked on. Found a small plate stuck to the back of the head and noticed what looked like paint flaking as I cleaned it up, guessing this means the engine was taken apart in the past which I don't know how I feel about.

It is possible to remove the chassis harness without cutting it. You have to pull the fuse box out of the kick panel on the drivers side, and it unplugs/bolts from the back of it and can be pulled out through the hole in the wheel well.

Trend of things getting out of hand continues!

Engine bay is mostly ready for paint! Paint stripped off of most everything firewall forward, tubes completely welded in, and took a bit of time to stitch weld around the strut towers and frame rails.

https://i.imgur.com/iIKipxgh.jpg

I've always wanted a removable core support to simplify the engine install and removal process. Have had some ideas kicking around and finally decided to just make it happen. Pretty simple overall, few small 1/8in plates welded under the edges and m6 nuts tacked to the bottom of them. Needs a bit of filling and grinding to finish it up, but super happy with the outcome!

https://i.imgur.com/yRTYIVih.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/XLPDBBqh.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/Qk2FBbvh.jpg

Last bit of welding will be to close up the extra holes in the firewall, will really help with keeping heat out of the cabin. (Brake hardlines will be gone soon too)

Valve cover also got some love to get it ready for paint, OEM red gave a hell of a struggle coming off, even the strongest paint stripped I could find took multiple coats to pull it up and there are some spots in the valley that won't clean up. Got lucky and scored an 18x10.5 pair of C5C2's the other day, really didn't need more wheels, but double stagger Pana's has been something I have wanted to run on a car for quite some time. Turns out they have a small center bore and are sitting about 10mm from the rotor face, once I get the center bore sorted they will fit the rear overs amazingly!

Front looks goofy being so high up and with a 255/40, if I can get another pair of 17's cheap I'll re-lip them to 17x9.5 and run a 225/40, should complete the look perfectly!

Thanks! Really need to roll them outside this weekend and hose them both down, the dust on both is insane :ugh:

Ohh I wasn't aware that was something they were working on! I'll have to keep my eye on their IG page for when it drops.

I could, but I don't really want to deal with trying to clean out the metal shavings from the baffle after. Going to rock some regular ass hose for now, once I build this extra bottom end I have for the car I'll for sure be going AN like I did on the Z32.

The last thing I wanted to take care of before I start painting was getting the harness out of the engine bay. Was such a pain in the ass to drag it through the fender without hacking it up. I'd really like to build a full chassis harness for the car, but I want to drive it before I dive into that.

Did the kit come with the hose clips to attach to the fire wall?

Also do you think that kit would be long enough to allow for a D21 master with the fittings on the other side of the master? That setup looks really neat.

Yes they come with the clips and will work with your "rhd" brake master.

The cams in the SR were looking a bit worse for wear, not sure what this means for the overall health of the engine, but I figured I'd swap them out with some DE cams I have been hoarding just for shits. Rockers were also pretty jacked so those came out and I threw a spare set in after re-bleeding the lifters. One of the cam bolt washers decided to take a vacation to the oil pan, but thankfully it made it all the way and was just chillin on the upper windage tray!

Original crank damper was cracked and chipped to hell, wasn't going to leave it to fall apart. With a fresh OEM damper from the man Juan at Bardabe Performance the engine was ready to drop in!

Picked up a band saw, made a few cuts and bend the pickup a bit to get the intake mocked up, still needs some adjusting before it gets welded up, but having a full 3in intake should sound awesome and provide the best overall response.

Yeah thats not the issue, SR20's run with the wrong oil will do this pretty quick. Running a high zinc oil prevents valvetrain wear, previous owner of the engine obviously didn't know this.

Wowowowowow

Wowowow it gets better! Made some changes to the engine harness, mainly pulled the chassis interface connectors inside the firewall and re-wrapped some bits of it. Transmission harness also got stripped down and re-routed through the old HVAC drain, fits well and cleans up the overall look.

Got all of the vacuum lines connected, double checked the mess of wiring inside the car and connected the battery. No sparks, no fires, good for a crank. Filled it up with some VR1 20w50, pulled the plugs and cranked it a few times to get some oil back into the system. Dropped the plugs back in, forgot the PTU was on the work bench from my re-routing shenanigans and tried to start it to no avail. Swapped a goofy ass FWD FRP onto it and then realized the real issue was the missing PTU, got it back in and the car started right up! Oil pressure is phenomenal, no weird noises (That I could hear) and it idled kinda okay even with all of the intercooler piping just sitting loosely in place.

https://i.imgur.com/xeEwNgWh.jpg

Swap is mostly sorted, need to fix a small coolant leak and bleed the cooling system a bit more, but it runs and the engine sounds happy overall. Currently only has half an exhaust on it, I think the GKTech engine mounts I have are warped causing the downpipe to sit against the floor pan and the trans mount was a bitch and a half to bolt up.

Anyone have a budget friendly mount suggestion? I want Nismo mounts, but I really don't want to spend the money right now...

When I had the car on stands last I noticed the drivers side axle boot was split in half and made one hell of a mess. Ordered some J30 axles from Rock Auto, they seem solid overall, but only time will tell. Also swapped some shims around in the diff, when I picked up the 4.6 R&P, it didn't come with the shims labeled. It was whining a bit so I swapped the thin shims around and hopefully the issue will be solved.

Little bit of progress with the car recently, really want to get it done ASAP to enjoy it while the weather isn't trying to kill us out here.

My rear brake line union decided to leak after the bay was painted and made a mess of the fresh paint on the frame rail. Pretty annoyed, but it was my fault for not tightening the fitting completely. Ended up pulling the intake back off and just rattle canning it black, looks like poop, but its drift car so MEH. Also tightened up/swapped all of the hose clamps while it was off since there was a phantom coolant leak I could never track down after the first start.

18in Panasports got torn down for a refresh too. The seal job on these was horrible, I have no idea how they held air. I actually thought the lips were different because when they were assembled one was slightly wider than the other, but it turned out there was just silicon packed between the barrel and lip. When I loosened the bolts some were tight, some were not so tight and once they were all out, I could just pull the lips from the barrels.

More silicon = better, right :keke:

Spend today buttoning up bits and getting the car ready to see the pavement again. Cooling system is finally working properly, after I re-installed the intake manifold I had an air bubble trapped somewhere and I was seeing temps on the PFC jump to 90+c idling while the outlet temp sensor would hang out close to ambient. Finally got it to burp a big bubble out and after topping it up temps are hanging out at 86c idling on the PFC and outlet sensor. Got the coil pack cover mounted and am overall very happy how everything turned out.

Passenger side fender is wrapped up, was a much nicer process welding with the MIG instead of the flux core. Before you judge me, I did clean up the edge and seal the seam. While welding the front corner a spark found its way into the little bit of insulation left inside the quarter panel and I had a nice size fire inside the car. About shit myself, but got it out without issue. I need to get a new fire extinguisher to keep in the shop...

Finally got my hands on a catback, tried to order a Greddy RS-Race from Enjuku a month ago and they failed to notify me it was months out on backorder. Found an ISR 3in blast pipe setup locally and decided it was better than nothing. Car is dumb loud, louder than it was with half an exhaust which doesn't really make since to me. It also really needs a tune, with the different cams, Z32 maf and 740cc injectors the base PFC tune is not super happy.

Happy new year everyone! Finished up some other little stuff today and took the car for the first drive since swapping the DET into it. Car sounds insane, I've heard SR's without BOV's before, but with the 3in intake the surge is way louder than I have ever heard, once its tuned its going to sound absurd. Mismatched wheels since the 18in Pana's are still in bits and the 17's have too much tire to clear the front at lock.

https://i.imgur.com/0h6hIUEh.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/E8sHno7h.jpg

Noticed some grinding noise as I pulled out, but decided I didn't care. When I got back I investigated and found the front outer tie rod is hitting the passenger side wheel barrel. Looks like its only hitting in one spot, guessing the wheel may have a slight bend in it because this was never an issue with the 8in pair I used to run. Don't mind the spider webs, most of the spiders are friendly :eek3:

https://i.imgur.com/9Bg9nxDh.jpg

Car also stalled a few times on my little drive and I noticed the alternator wasn't charging. Really wasn't sure what could be wrong, did some forum digging and found the "Meter" fuse was pretty important and found mine blown. My dumbass left the cluster laying on the exposed dash bar, back shorted on the bar and was popping the fuse. Got that sorted and we were back in business.

I had the same issue with the gktech ones and had to cut the extra threads down flush with the nut. Oem style outer works well in that sorta scenario for me.
Anyhow, car looks very good and is coming along really well. I need to get out I. The garage but the snow makes me not want to go out lol.

I think I am going to swap back to OEM style too, pretty sure I have a pair from my Z32 kicking around that I can toss on. The boots are already torn on these GKTech ones anyway, such "high quality" parts

Really appreciate the kind words, its finally coming together the way I've wanted it after all this time. I feel you on finding motivation, but with the heat instead of the cold. It was a brisk 65*F today out here, but when its 110*+ I have a hard time forcing myself to touch my cars.

Car is officially ready for a tune, been sick and busy so I haven't touched it in a bit. After the first test drive I had a feeling that there was a pretty significant boost leak due to the idle not catching and the car stalling. Pulled out my trusty PVC cap/valve stem and pressurized the whole system. Found #4 injector was leaking pressure, I installed new seals when I put the rail back in, no idea why it was leaking. I applied pressure to the whole rail, bolted it back down and all is good. Car idles significantly better and doesn't try to stall on me anymore.

Took the car for another little drive and noticed the AFR's were dumb fat, 13.2 idle and 12.2 low rpm cruising. Seemed to be getting a bit warmer now, sitting around 89c on the PFC readout, but I can only assume that is from the fucky PFC base map. Hopefully I can get the car to a tuner this week!

Shitty ISR catback wasn't going to fit with a kit on the car so I chopped up the old axle back I had on the car and made it fit. Not the finest craftsmanship, but for now it gets the job done and I won't be burning the car to the ground melting fiberglass.

Panasports are all torn down finally as well, ready for a full refresh. The 17's are getting some parts swapped to make a proper front pair, seemed like and easy project until I started pulling them apart. I paid someone to clean these up a few years ago, what a mistake... Again silicone between faces and lips/barrels. Bolts were not torqued evenly, some were stupid tight, others were finger tight. Of the super tight bolts, one was cross threaded and tore apart the captured nut in the face. Faces were painted fully instead of leaving the mating surfaces raw which made it so the faces had to be hammered from the barrels. Overall quite the shit show, never trusting anyone with wheels again. Ordering all new hardware for these before I re-assemble and chasing all of the threads with a tap to clean out and silicone/shit stuck in them.

Car got onto the dyno and found that timing was out mechanically, ended up having the exhaust cam retarded a tooth. We got that fixed, timing was perfect and started dialing it in. Few pulls later it made 230/203 at 8psi, but on the last pull it made a loud tapping as it fell back to idle. Noise went away at idle, but came right back with a little throttle input. Called it a day, will have to investigate more tomorrow once I get it back home.

Looks like a clean build. Why did you install two different types of wheels?

The wheels for this car are in a million pieces waiting for paint/polish/new hardware, just running what I have around with tires for now.

For a dyno session while the car is still undergoing prep, does it matter??

lol!

Great build dude. Keep it up!

Honestly I kinda expected failure when it went to the dyno. I'm just happy I have a useable map I can run once the engine is sorted.

I didn't had the printout from the dyno the other day, but here it is. Not sure what to make of it tbh. Still have no idea what turbo is on the car, CHRA part number doesn't match anything I can find online. Wish the boost graph was on there, but it made 8psi pretty early and held strong to redline without any creep. I think this turbo and the DE cams will be very nice once its in the 14-18psi range.

https://i.imgur.com/Ym8H6Mhh.jpg

If you find an engine abandoned in a storage container with oil filter on it, its probably not the deal you were looking for. The cam wear I found when I pulled the valve cover off originally didn't inspire confidence with this long block, but I decided to take the risk and dress/drop the engine in. With fresh VR1 and good oil pressure it sounded very happy, I was pretty confident that the bottom end was in okay condition. Well lets say I should have taken the time to dig a bit deeper because shes done for. Dropped the oil and its painfully obvious there is bearing failure. Going to need a full tear down, clean out and rebuild.

https://i.imgur.com/vXwyYp6h.jpg

I was happy to see the drain plug didn't pickup much magnetic material, hopefully this means the crank is going to be okay.

https://i.imgur.com/3kcxLkJh.jpg

Now I am at the cross road of building this bottom end and I'm really having a hard time figuring out how I want to do it. I know my thread title says "Keep it simple", but I have a hard time doing that when I have a choice.

- Easy and cheap way is OEM+ type rebuild, clean it all up, fresh OEM main/rod bolts, OEM bearings, OEM pump and re-use rod/pistons. Car made great vacuum, decent power at 8psi and had no blow-by or oil consumption so running the original pistons and rings shouldn't be an issue. This does severely limit power potential though, our piss 91 pump gas is going to stop me around 300whp and still probably be pushing the limits of what the stock pistons can handle.

- Forged internals brings a lot of extra cost and labor to the assembly, but will give me the room to make more power and be able to use it as I grow with the car. Really leaning toward building it simply because I don't want to put the work into a stock rebuild just to end up limited if I want more.

Opinions? Thoughts?

Got to work ripping the car apart today. Didn't have an extra pair of hands out with me so I just prepped it to pull, but I did take the turbo off so I can have it cleaned out.

Made an executive decision that the S13 is going to borrow the Z32's SR for the time being. Its going to take some time to get another engine together so I may as well put the build engine I have to use. Really excited to finally see this engine running and its going to make the S13 an absolute animal!

Run down on the engine is:

S13 SR20DET block
WPC treated crankshaft
WPC treated Nissan OEM main and rod bearings
Nissan OEM oil pump w/ WPC treated gears
CP 86.5mm 9.0CR pistons
Manely Rods
Sianar Motorsports -10AN breather
Nissan OEM main bolts
Nissan OEM timing components
ATI super damper

180SX head ported & polished by Port Flow
Ferrea dual valve springs
Ferrea +1mm valves
Dual guides
Tomei 260 procams
Apexi head gasket
Mazworx ARP Headstuds
S13.5 valve cover w/ -10AN fittings

Since the G25-550 setup currently on the built SR has an exhaust suited for the Z chassis, I'm going to run the Tomei manifold and HKS turbo that were on the S13 with it. Separated the turbo and manifold, manifold was covered in some nasty heat wrap that was falling apart. Got it all stripped off and covered myself in fiberglass nastiness. Thinking I'll have it ceramic coated before it goes back in to manage heat in the bay without needing to re-wrap it. Turbo came home with me to be dropped to a local and have it torn down, cleaned and to see if it needs a rebuild after being pumped full of bearing material

Damn that's a bummer about the bottom end. Yeah no magnetic material is a good sign!

That other SR sure is gonna be snappy though! Wish I could afford to put Ferrea stuff in mine before it goes back together. Oh well!

New motor is going to be awesome. I'm jealous of all the WPC parts! I asked mazworx about doing wpc if I send an engine in for a build and they said it wasn't worth it -_-

My head is way overbuilt for either application, but I am really excited to see the power it will make!

I'd really love to know why they don't think its worth while. Any friction reduction on moving parts seems like win in the event of dropping oil pressure.

Interested in selling voggards once new wheels are done?

Happy new year everyone! Finished up some other little stuff today and took the car for the first drive since swapping the DET into it. Car sounds insane, I've heard SR's without BOV's before, but with the 3in intake the surge is way louder than I have ever heard, once its tuned its going to sound absurd. Mismatched wheels since the 18in Pana's are still in bits and the 17's have too much tire to clear the front at lock.

Car also stalled a few times on my little drive and I noticed the alternator wasn't charging. Really wasn't sure what could be wrong, did some forum digging and found the "Meter" fuse was pretty important and found mine blown. My dumbass left the cluster laying on the exposed dash bar, back shorted on the bar and was popping the fuse. Got that sorted and we were back in business.

Pretty excited that nothing blew up or leaked, once I get the wheel issue worked out I should be able to get the car to a tuner and actually enjoy it! Finished the day up by cleaning up the absolute disaster I made while working on the car, feels good to have everything tidy again.

Okay, so some progress has been made since the SR committed seppuku.

Engines came out of both cars and I started tearing down the knocking SR. Found even more bearing material in the pan, but other than that everything looks really good.

Wiggled the rods around and #2 wasn't having it so I pulled the cap to find this wonderful sight under it. Bearing is torn apart almost to the shell, but was not spun and the crank looks okay. Engine had great oil pressure and fresh VR1 in it, I'm sure I this saved it from completely killing itself. Looked into the markings on the bearings, they are eBay special trash someone must have slapped into the engine.

The HKS turbo went out for a rebuild to get all of the bearing material out of it. Local friend took care of the rebuild and was able to get a slightly bigger wheel stuffed into it while it was apart. While it was apart we figured out its some odd sized GT25, not sure what its going to be capable of, but seeing it make 230whp on 8psi gives me hope it will be able to make mid 300's with the boost turned up and the new wheel.

Before the turbo setup went back on I wanted to address the hardware and wastegate. Ordered some nice studs and copper locking washers to hopefully keep the gaskets intact. Also picked up a PBM cobra downpipe to have a flex section in the exhaust.

Original wastegate wasn't going to cut it for this engine, was planning to just order a 1 bar Garrett replacement, but this compressor housing mounting points are different from T28. Ended up going with a Tial 12psi IWG actuator and adjustable mount from ATP. Seems like it'll do the trick after I remove a bit of material from one of the ears on the compressor housing.

Cleaned the lower pan in the parts washer and made sure to get all of the junk out of it. Threw the Z's engine up on the hoist and swapped the pans. I hate leaving an engine swaying away, but I was too lazy to pull the clutch and put it on a stand. Engine is pretty much ready to go back in the car, hoping this next weekend it'll be in place!

Since I can't find anyone to buy the RG's, I figured I'd get some smaller tires on them and run them. Found some tires cheap on closeout through work and snagged a set. Moved from a 265/35 to a 235/40, fitment is way better, need to work out front fitment a bit still though because I'm hitting the firewall at partial lock. Thinking it has something to do with these GKTech RCC blocks pushing the bottom of the wheel out way too far.

Car looks goofy as hell with the front so high and no kit. I actually sold the kit that was on the car and ordered some new hotness that should show up in the next few months!

I know a thing or two about one step forward, two steps back! Haha. Looks good as always though, it'll be interesting to see what that turbo does.

Seems like I'm stuck in a loop of one step forward, two steps back :duh: Its the little things that can bring the entire process to halt...

Wastegate fitment is worked out, ground down the ear it was hitting on the compressor housing and everything lines up pretty well. Threw some compressed air into it and everything moves freely.

Drilled and tapped a 1/8NPT port into the turbo outlet for boost reference, decided to put it low on the outlet to keep a clean look. Really happy with it overall, need to throw some heat sleeve over it, but its got some good clearance from the manifold as is.

Intake manifold went back on the engine, hopefully for good this time. Fuel rail is back on with the Radium DMR and ID1050X's, really love how the short ID1050 and radium rail look on the Greddy manifold. Again I'm running more push lock fittings for vacuum to keep everything easily serviceable and reduce the need for zipties or clamps.

Got an Xcessive (short) shifter relocation for the Z32 trans, instructions kinda sucked. Got the old linkage cut off, pressed the little needle bearing caps out with the vice and it went on perfectly. I love the FS5R30A feeling and I shouldn't need to mess with or worry about this setup.

You're telling me man, story of my whole life :P.

Now I'm wishing I would have gotten that direct mount FPR, that thing is slick. Oh well, haha. Definitely shield that plastic tubing well, we had plenty of cars come through the shop with holes in the blocks from melted or popped off wastegate lines. "It felt so fast" lol.

Engine is in the car, finally. I have been kicking sand and working on my WRX recently so the 240 hasn't seen much love. Had some small issues fitting everything in with the Z32 trans, but it ended up just being a bolt sticking through the trans tunnel. Mazworx transmission crossmember and Xcessive shifter bracket put the shifter right where it needs to be which I couldn't be happier about!

Picked up another set of 17x9 GT-R spec Panasports. These are cracked/bent to hell which makes them perfect candidates to re-build for the S13! Going for a 17x9.5 for the front and 17x10.5 for the rear, plus the pair of 18x10.5 for the rear.

https://i.imgur.com/aeMt0sQh.jpg

I bought a 3D printer a while back and have been playing with it a bit recently. Since the S13 will be getting new fuel lines from the tank forward, I wanted a more elegant solution for line routing. Figured P-Clamps would work, but since I have the printer I wanted to try and make some proper line holders. This is the first "Prototype" i have printed, copied the size of the original metal brackets, made it a bit thicker, two 14mm holes and a counter bore for the mounting hole to accept an M6 cap bolt. Really happy with how it turned out, going to clean up the edges, make the top removeable and print the final parts from ABS.

The possibilities are near endless, even for someone like me that has no idea what I'm doing! Here is the "Final" version I'll be test printing tomorrow from PLA before trying to move to ABS.

Revised my fuel line retainer again and came up with a much better looking design that is significantly more functional. Used the original retainer/metal bracket to model this part and ensure there won't be any fitment issues against the bottom the the chassis. This design is meant to use a metal zip tie to hold the upper and lower halves together, snugly clamping the hose. For the final part I wanted a much stronger material than basic PLA, upgraded my 3D printer to allow higher print temperatures and made a test part from reinforced nylon/carbon fiber filament. Part came out awesome!

https://i.imgur.com/SUKrzobh.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/vtrqDdAh.jpg

With knowing the design was going to work, I revised the part one more time and added the brake line provision. Final part has a slightly revised fillet around the channel for the zip tie to allow for a cleaner print with less overhang as well. Will be making some of these tomorrow and test fitting them on the car!

Also finally set the car on the ground with an engine in it and the RG's on, seeing it at the correct ride height gets me more hyped to work on it!
