I have recently installed a used engine in my 240. Finally got the distributor set and its started up. My only problem now is it wont rev past 3000rpm and i hear a ticking noise to be coming form the valve cover. Any ideas on my next step to bringing my baby back from the grave? I couldnt figure out how to upload my video from my iphone but i could email to anyone willing to help me through this. Thanks!

Mine has a tick sound too but I feel like it’s normal for an old engine, now if it’s super loud then I would look into it

Yeah im gonna take it for a spin and see how it drives. I just hope its not a bad "tick" and im not sure how to look into it.

It’s called valve slash, my buddy did it in his KA when he rebuild it

If it sounds loud you might want to look into that

Start it up with the valve cover off....then listen for noise

can also be the timing chain being loose...eg tensioner sticking or alternately the upper guide removed

So I reset the distributor and cleaned the MAF and she runs!!!!! Now I still have the ticking so I went ahead and checked my valve clearance. Everything seems to be close expect for cylinder 1. I have .008 and .012 for clearance on the intake valves and .012 and .014 on the exhaust valves. I guess I need to see if I can remove a shin from the intake bucket to get closer to .012

You have to find the right size shim to get the clearance

You have to see what size shim is In there then go to steps down

I’m going to search today and see if I can find the old shins from my old engine. If not I guess I’ll have to order some. How can I tell if it’s the timing chain that’s making the noise and not the buckets? Also I’ve driven it around the block a few times and it doesn’t have too much throttle response. I think maybe my injectors might be gunked up. Was thinking about just ordering some cheapninjectors off rock auto.

Check if your exhaust manifold is leaking, I put a new gasket and sealed it up, also was missing 2 studs, I was getting ready to replace the rockers, but after sealing it right, no ticking
