Hi guys, I went to get my car smogged and i failed...Here are the results:
Mph-15 Rpm-2841 %co2-14.4 %o2-0.8 HC(PPM) max-88 ave-21 meas-42
CO(%) max-0.52 ave-0.06 meas-0.06 NO(PPM) max-704 ave-150
meas-1707
Mph-25 Rpm-2796 %co2-14.3 %o2-0.8 HC(PPM) max-53 ave-13 meas-30
CO(%) max-0.50 ave-0.05 meas-0.03 NO(PPM) max-738 ave-136
meas-1702
Well there are the results. I checked my EGR crap and everything is working. When i rev the engine the EGR doesnt really open but it does move, maybe like 1/4 of an inch. When i push on the plunger the engine does also die. I tested the EGR and Backpressure transducer and it is functioning. I also tested the EGR temp sensor and it is not within specs with the Resistance when cold or hot, can this cause the problem? I also had the check engine light on the other day with diagnostic code 32 but it went away and never came back on after i cleared the codes.
Thanks

If your car has more than 160k miles, I would say check your cat.
Where in Nor cal are ayou?

Your Probably right..my car has 157k on it. I am in the san jose area. BTW what would a faulty egr temp sensor cause?

egr temp sensor just notifies you that your egr is clogged.

So should i worry about my faulty temp sensor?

If you beat on your car often, and neglect maintainence. I would believe that your cat may need to be replaced.
If your temp sensor is bad, it'll throw a code.

Should the egr valve open all the way when i rev the engine to around 3500 rpm? Because it only opens alittle and then closes. The weird thing is that when i test the vacuum from the transducer it gets enough vacuum to open the egr valve fully.

WHere in nor cal are you?
EGR should not open all the way when you rev. It "shutters". The only way for the egr to stay open is while you're cruising.

Opps i meant hold the throttle open to around 3500rpm

EGR only stays open while you are cruising. From everything that you have said, the probablility of the EGR being the problem, is very slim.

Aite yesterday i was crusing on the freeway around 65 and my check engine light comes on for a few minutes and then shuts off. So i come home and check the codes and its code 32. What the hell is going on? Is it my EGR solenoid?

I don't have the manual. What's a code 32
32 is an EGR related code. First of all your car wasnt tested properly. It was tested in first and second gear rather than second gear, although this would normally help pass a car it could cause some cars to fail but not likely. Your CO2 is high (14.4%) which means the system is efficient as far as air/fuel.

Ok I am pretty sure now that my EGR valve, transducer, and solenoid is working properly but my CEL goes on when im cruising around 65mph. I think the problem is my egr temp sensor. I did a diagnostic test couple days ago and it gave code 35, which is the egr temp sensor. I haven’t got that code for a while, but I am getting code 32 all the time. Would the temp sensor cause code 32 to come up?
Thanks

Give another cat a shot, I just borrowed a cat with 60K miles and just barely passed.

check your engine timing make sure its in spec due a tune up on the car . clean out your throttle body with carb cleaner it works wonders. I have had cars that were gross polluters that were throwing codes . After I reset timing to stock specs tuned them up i.e. new dist cap.and rotor new spark plugs and possible wires along with cleaning out the throttle body car passed flying colors and the car had almost 200k miles on it. You need to remove the intake tube right in front of your throttle body and open the throttle plate and just spray a can of carb cleaner in there and then fire up your engine and run it . It will burn out all the carbon buildup in the system including your aiv. Your aiv is another thing to check and possibly clean. If they clog they will cause egr system problems. Do all this stuff you should come into spec. especially since your NO was the one that was way off the scales.

I went to a the smog shop yesterday and the guy was nice enough to give me a free pre test. I put my friends stock exhaust and cat from his car that passed to put on my car and it did get better but not enough to pass. (15mph=1025 25mph=1045) The guy told me to hold the egr valve all the way open as he ran the car and the NO jumped from 1025 to 400.....i tested the egr valve, transducer, and solinoid instructed in the FSM and all is working. Also as i rev the engine the egr valve moves up and down. Anybody know what else can be the problem?

that stupid vac line coming off the EGR on the bottom of the valve, it makes a 90 degree bend towards the front of the car, it always has a fing hole in it and causes my 240s to fail with high NOX....
have you checked it for holes?

well gee, did you read my post and do what I told you too? it does work guys , I have made many s13's pass with high mileage by doing that. Only reason I am asking again is it seems no one has said they tried it they just keep on having a smog tech tell them stuff. I did what I did to a gross polluter and it passed and not only the smog tech at the place next door was amazed but the test only tech was amazed as well due to the fact that car had failed so bad the day before.
Its up to if you have done it and your still having problems then ya check the cat. This is not rocket science people its a very straight forward system.

ya i have the same problem..ill cruise on the freeway and the cel will come on then after awhile the dam thing will turn off again..the next day it will do it again..i hooked up a nissan consult obd1 ecu scanner egr and o2 came up ...im planning to change out my entire egr system as well as my o2 sensor cause i have high co at low speed and high nox at high speed there are the only two i failed at smog tech told me that the numbers switch at thats what caused me to fail..along with my timing being at 10 tdc rather than 20 tdc...i know fsm allows +/- 2 degrees tdc so imma put it as low as possible to optimize combustion btw my cat is new the white fabric mesh inside the cat..remarkably is hella white any way i can lower co and nox w/o changing entire egr????
