I was wondering if anyone has tried this and has any tips. My interior is tan, whith a brown dash and I want to replace the entire interior with charcoal gray, but thought that it might be possible to just paint it. I've seen this done on quite a few dash peices, but wonder if I could do the whole dash, or if that would be nasty. :bite: Comments????

"I" before "E" except AFTER "C" ;)
hehee, serious tho, I do have some actual input :D
Against both our better judgement, a friend of mine did this. It looked okay, just don't expect to be able to preserve the texture of the plastic perfectly.
Cleaning, light sanding, and primer are key.
HOWEVER, if you're looking to change your whole interior, just change the pieces. THey're cheap from part yards, as well as people parting cars here on zilvia. The charcoal interior was by far the most popular, thus better for your part sourcing. When all is said and done, the negligable savings of painting your whole interior (don't forget you'll have to dye or replace the carpet... tan carpet+charcoal interior = ass) vs. having the real deal that won't chip or scuff with normal wear (which WILL happen) isn't worth all the man hours you'll have to put into it.
But then maybe you're the kinda guy that says, "I climb mountains cuz they're there."
Me? I say, "Damn that's a big mountain, screw that... lets 'drift' my friend's civic into it with a full payload of TNT" ;)

i used a plastic paint for the plastic parts. worked fine with just light sanding and no primer.

hmmmmm...... I don't know what to do. The car is ripped apart in the garage anyway and I saw some Kryon plastic fusion paint in Walmart. I was just thinking of ripping out the carpet anyway, because it smells like mildew. I might try it, if it doesn't look good it doesn't matter cause it would have been scrapped anyway.

i used interior dye from autozone. it took quite a few cans but it did the job and it seems to be holding up well. it's gonna do till i find a really good looking4 black interior for my POS.

That looks good to me Makoto. So does that dye come in spray can like paint?
I was thinking of using the kryon black satin finish and a matte clear coat.

SEM. The only answer for plastic painting.
Most quality autobody suppliers sell it, there's a staged process that includes a spray adhesion promoter, prep, and color coat. They also make urethane bumper coater and similair type products that work excellent on plastic, as long as you follow the proper application and usage.

yeah it was sprayed and it's supposed to dye the material. also, you have to know how to PAINT or it'll come out lookin like refried donkey balls. since its supposed to dye the stuff i didn't sand or anything for fear of putting scuff marks in the stuff. it is/was a trial and error thing so don't blame me if your stuff don't stay/come out looking good.
p.s. listen to R240, he knows things.
p.p.s. i got my cans from autozone about 5 bones a piece.

hey GENIUS how about you search for a thread titled "my brand new carpet"?
oh yeah, cause that would require having testicles and more than half a brain.

my advice?
trash your dookie brown interior and replace it with the grey. regardless of what anyone says (including russ), if you paint your interior any SCRATCH will remove the paint and reveal whats underneath it, which brings you back to............. . . . . . dookie brown interior.
so, dump the carpet, dump the dash, the door panels, and everything.. give it to a friend in need. then, find someone (or some car) thats being parted out. you can get the interior for dirt cheap depending on who you know. while you have the interior apart, this will give you the fine opportunity to steam clean your carpet and seats, etc.. cleanup wiring, etc.. etc.. and so on and so on....

Somewhat true Mikey. When done properly it's pretty scratch resistant, and I'm going on how I treat my own car, being careful and not kicking/banging chit when I get in and out or throwing bricks, bowling balls, etc. in the backseat. I even warn passengers when they get in to wipe their feet, empty their pockets, etc.
For the people who can't control their motor functions, things will eventually get roughed up, a little touch up goes a long way though. Who knows if the boneyard panels will be in any better condition or not.
And you can lightly sand any plastic panel to get some of the scratches out, worst case scenario you can sand it completely smooth, then use texture coat to bring it back to OE spec. But there's few people who put that much work into it, I'm probably one of like three who would.

i would search... then find the answer to this question (plenty of threads on this)... then do it myself instead of being spoon fed all these answers.
I painted the parts in my Civic (yes but it was back in 99) and the cun faded the colors from dark purple to lavender it was a really nice when it was finally done. The interior guys use car paint with plastic adheasive on the paint. But Ive also seen it peel from these guys so prep work is gonna be where your money should be at.
