It has a really strong RB20DET, but Jr has snagged this GREAT running RB26DETT to swap in. That is the weekend project.

This is the first car he has ever had that really worried me. I drove it with the RB20 in it and had a hard time controlling myself! I wanted to take it sideways from EVERY stop. It is loaded with aftermarket goodies, but with the 26DETT it will be STUPID FAST as well as WAY easy to get sideways. Fortunately Jr is a good driver with good self control.

It has a relatively new suspension and a Nismo LSD that I was really impressed with. He has a triple-plate clutch...HKS turbines...bigger injectors...igniter...cams...rolle cage...(and I don't know what all else). It will be a beast...oh yes...it will be a beast. :D

EDIT: I forgot...
It has this knob along side the console that when pushed in the exhaust is normal and pretty quiet. When you pull it out...it is like uncapping the headers or something. It disconnects the muffler and cat. You can be loud and fast...or quiet and tame (relatively tame anyway).

the Apex exhaust controller eh?
those seem pretty cool.

Yeah I think so. He hadn't gotten the 26DET yet then. It took FOREVER to get it registered. The former owner let the JCI expire and their signature stamp forms were old. We had to wait on them (it was a girl and she got married...he name changed...needed a new sig stamp...the car was no longer much of a priority for her). THEN we had to go through a bunch of hassle on base to get registration. We already have more cars than normally is allowed and have a waiver for more. Some of the cars are permenently at a track and they made us officially deregister a few so that we didn't have so many on the books. THEN we had to jump through all the new parking crap. THAT added another 2 weeks to the process.

It was worth it though....it really is a sweet car.

Out of curiosity, do you know what motor '89 Laurels had?

god one of these days they'll ship me out to okinawa or ayase or somewhere in japan so I can get my hands on all these wonderful cars. was talking to my SSgt today and found out he had a nice ass fd in oki when he was out there, he showed me a bunch of pictures of his car and others out there, they were awesome. this is the same guy that now drives a c5 zo6.

89 Laurels were C33s. They came wqith RB20de engines unless they were Laurel Medalists. The Medalist came with the RB20DET. I am not sure but I think the C34 Laurels came with the RB25.

mrmephistopheles
11-11-2004, 12:22 AM
ok, so Medalist = DET.
I might try to find a 5sp Medalist C33 soon then. I was informed that S13 suspension swaps over.. do you know anything that contradicts this? I'm getting tired of our Legacy crap wagon.

I am not sure about the suspension question. My guess would be no as the Laurel is a bit bigger. I am also not sure if the Medalist was available in a 5 speed, but many Laurels have had the transmissions swapped. Jr's tranny came from an R33 I believe. They make great family cars, Dad. :D Screw the ScoobyDoo.

I could swear some came M/T... Yeah, if I can pick one up on the cheap, I'll snag it and play with it. The Scooby is so unreliable, we have the baby's carseat mounted in the 180!

so...!?! how did the swap go?
Well he was working on it until LATE last night...this morning. Got the RB20DET out...went to prepare the 26 to go in...found that the RB20DET oil pan didn't fit. We were under the impression that the RB20 oil pan WOULD fit. The valve cover fits...we thought the oil pan would as well. The 26 oil pan has to be replaced as it has special fittings for the all wheel drive components. So...the car has to sit until we can get an oil pan from an RB25. Should be next weekend or sooner. Boy is Jr bummed. :-/
Edit:
Well....he was right in the first place. The RB20 pan DOES work. The holes are different from the RB26, but the block has 2 sets of holes! Who would have thought to look for different holes for different pan? He needs to gently bang on it with a ballpeen hammer where the oil pump is and shave a bit off the pump and he is good to go.

nice looking laurel, check out my cardomain for my c33. http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/569880

as for suspension, everything from s13 works, it's all exactly the same. the rear end suspension/subframe and diff is the same as r32 skyline. these cars are exactly the same as A31 nissan cefiro, just different body panels.
medalist is just a trim package, some of them were diesel! i have medalist Club-L which are all turbo with leather interior. theres also club-s which is turbo with luxury trim. then basic medalist and basic laurel which come with these engines: rb20e; rb20de; rb20det; rb25de; rd28; ca18i. all of which have a rare manual option. the c34 came with rb25det and there was an attessa version which was 4wd. the c35 also has rb25det.

just felt like spreading the knowledge :D
enjoy

I really like Laurels. There is one near here that the owner modified with a Silvia and made it into a 2 door sedan. 4 drs is my only beef with them. 4 drs are for grocery gitters :D.

Most people are unaware of how nicely they drift.

Okay...so it isn't bad enough that he already drives cooler cars than his old man....
You can see his beast here. (http://www.quickstyle.org/) In addition to that he has two cars at the track JUST to beat on!

NOW...........

He has decided he wants to get this:

He out-did me with his second car he ever owned. The little jerk had a C33 Laurel then. Then he got his first Sileighty.....THAT is why some animals EAT their young. They fear being out done by their progeny.
After my wreck in December....I'll stick to the cheap wheels for a while. My truck is just fine for the time being.

26 will be stupid heavy as well so it doesn't make for a good handling car. This is from personal experience w/ 2 installs into s14's. I know its a difference car but w/ the added weight u will notice how nose heavy it is. rb26 is a different beast, linear. Not the same pull as the normal sr's. But that car should be a fun beast to drive

elevator
04-24-2005, 04:54 AM
He has no plans for another 26. He has started accumulating parts for a full tuned SR. The S15 runs fine as it is, but he is not one to leave well-enough alone. This time he plans to get the engine work done PRIOR to the swap. His Laurel sat too danged long in an innoperable state. That was pretty frustrating.

I don't think I would EVER put an RB in a Silvia or 180. I am much too much a fan of the SR.

The Laurel is getting shipped to Okinawa. BTW the RB26 is PERFECT in that car!

The S15 is going to be on the road within a week or two.
