Oil additives and Hydraulic lifters

OK, my KA24E burns oil... I believe it mostly comes into the combustion chamber from the valves. I don't care too much about it since I am swapping to another E sometime late this year...


Anyway, I have contemplated using products like Lucas Stop Leak to stop the burning, I have heard friends say that it has worked well in their cars. My concern is that if I use these thick fluids, it will block oil passages to the head and perhaps cause trouble with the hydraulic lifters on the KA-E.

My E already has a nasty valve tick after runs where I have sustained high steady state cornering loads, so there are already problems in getting oil up there.

Does anyone have experience with additives like these on a KA24E engine?

The lucas additives are the best out there IMO...as far as thickening the oil, yes it does that, but as the oil heats up the flow becomes normal. It dowen't turn your oil in mollases if that's what you mean. Basically it helps keep the oil up inside the engine in between operations. As far as the lifters, I wouldn't worry about it, if they're already trash this stuff isn't going to hurt them or help them. It will help plug some leaks if you got any. Maybe not all the way but mostly.

I use it in my 96' KA24DE with 185k miles and no leaks, still pulls hard, runs quiet and smooth. I've been using it since around 80k, excellent stuff.

If I’m not mistaking the KA24E doesn’t have lifters. We have a rocker arm that one side rest on the valve stem, and the other is on a pivot. The cam lobe then pushes on a pad on the one end of the rocker arm.

If I am way off correct me, so far the valve cover has only been off my engine once and I do have a shady memory...

The hydraulic lifter is in the rocker arm...

I use 3 quarts castrol 1 quart lucas every oil change. runnin strong.

Have you tried Seafoam in the Crankcase & Fuel tank??

It might help clean up the excess carbon buildup on both the pistons & valves. It can also help clean up some of the sludge buildup in the crankcase. It's a cheap alternative & might help stop your oil burning. Should hold you over till you replace the engine.

Yeah, I have done Seafoam treatment to my engine before. It made it worse :doh:

Seafoam cleaned out all the carbon deposits that were sealing the valves.

If I can grab my friend's compression tester sometime this weekend, I will go buy that Lucas Stop Leak and do a before/after test. Thanks for all the help.
