View Full Version : Rough Idle due to injector?

So I take my car to the dealer to have them look at the shaking at idle with a/c off. They say it turns out to be the #3 cylinder..and that a USED INJECTOR would run me $200-250, and that may be the problem. :loco: I dont even believe that its the injector thats the problem, but is there a way I can find out myself if it is? What else could the problem be, I already changed the plugs, and fuel filter.. And where can I buy a used injector, (definetly not for that price). Thanks

Look at the plugs, that is the easiest way. To narrow it down to which cylinder it is you can do a power balance test where you pull the sparkplug wire at each cylinder. The idle should drop when you pull it and if one cylinder doesn't change then thats the problem cylinder. Look in the classifieds for a used injector from someone paring out their car, you could probably get 4 with the fuel rail for $100 or less.

Ha, the exact same shit happened to me yesterday; the injector just died out of nowhere. :tweak:
Just check for different things, pull the plug wire with the engine running and ground it on the valve cover to check for spark, switch the plug wires around to see if the misfire moves (means get new plug wires), unplug the injector connector and check the wire side for power with the ignition at ON (one of the two connections inside the connector should be 12v)... that basically leaves the cap/rotor or the injector, but if the dealership thinks it's an injector I'd believe them.

A brand new injector at the dealer is ~110, autozone/etc it's ~90. The estimate you got was probably with labor and all that. If you've got the tools (invest in some hose grip pliers (http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000AXBUZ.01-A1787XOD7Q2I4M._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg) and penetrating oil) and the time just do it yourself and save some money.
There's an eBay auction going right now for a fuel rail with injectors for 50, with a buy it now of 55.

The injector could be fine and just the lower O-ring could be worn or torn. Pull the injector, inspect the o-rings.

Update
I went to a yard today and picked up an injector from an auto 91 240. Im told to change the rubber ring that sits on the injector.. Do I pick one up from nissan or autozone?? I tried to take out the 2 screws that hold the injector and i couldnt move it even with some wd40 sprayed on it. Any trick to it? If I cant get it im just going to take it my friends dad who has a toyota corrola 86 setup for drift, so im sure he can help me out.
Thanks

Get a screwdriver that fits it perfectly. Use visegrips on the screwdriver and when pushing down on the screwdriver turn the visegrips.

Ill give that a try on one of my good injectors tomorrow..this whole time i thought the car was just running rough, a while back i posted that the car has a certain vtec feel to it after 5500 rpm, my guess its that the 4th cylinder didnt kick in till that rpm and it felt like a boost in speed.
thanks

put the screwdriver in the screw, and tap it a few times with a hammer. This will usually break loose the threads. Then proceed to try to uncrew it with the screw driver still in place from tapping it. (this makes sure the screw driver is fully seater in the screw.

another thing you can do is get an impact screw driver. works with the same hammer pricipal, but they add a twisting action when you hit them.

this was probably due to the Swirl control valves opening in the intake manifold.

What is the purpose for that? I still feel it come on..

THe Swirl Combustion Valve is designed to imporve engine torque and power by increasing or decreasingthe intake manifold induction volume under different driving conditions. Limited induction volume at low speeds heavy loads is desired. Increased induction volume under heavy loads and high speed is desired.
