Chassis harness delete?

Im trying to remove as much of the chassis harness as i can, I just want bare bones. I want to run a switch panel. Has anyone done this and have any pointers? My guess would be looking at the relays and finding which ones i dont need and then removing the wires for that specific relay?

Grab the box, start pulling, find the first thing stopping it from coming out, remove that thing, keep pulling, don't stop

Well I'm building a track car and I want minimal wires to clean everything up and make ts wiring much easier. I just need the essentials so i figured instead of chopping up the harness and de-pinning I would just run my own wires and relays but seeing all these wires I'm skeptical on what I actually need.

Why not just remove the circuits and accessories you don't want from the current harness? Unless there's a physical problem with the wiring there's no need to remove it all. Most "track cars" have original wiring, unless there's something really wrong, like it's a British car.

+1, you're opening up yourself to tons of wiring problems. I'd keep the body harness stock.

Well that was my original plan but half the wires are rubbed down and frayed from the previous owner slamming the car. I didnt want to try to "repair" that, idk I want a really clean professional look as well I figured it would be better to make my own relay and power distribution block since im going to be running a switch panel i could just have wires running directly to what I needed rather than splicing into existing wires and creating a cluster fuck. Idk if doing this js as bad as you guys are making it seem i might just do some ghetto repairs on it.

Rip all the harness out.


Buy an ARC 8000 switchpanel / harness kit.


Install it.

Just need wire, switches, and relays:

- Accessories
- Ign
- Fuel Pump
- Start
- Elec Fan override
- taillights
- kill switch
- universal fuse box

You literally just connect to stuff you need to power/not power. I used the12volt forums to get some basic relay wiring information.

After a year of running it like that & making more modifications based on what I wanted/added, I got one of the painless wiring kits - super easy.

Thanks dude! Yeah after tearing out the harness today it seems pretty simple and straight forward. I think it was just staring at all those wires had me questioning my existence. Lol

The PO hacked stuff together with a lot of relay plugs open and no clue what's even connected anymore. I ended up just ripping everything out along with the relay box, fuse boxes, and whatever harnesses weren't necessary. Ended up being about 27 lbs of wires and tape.

This greatly reduced the headache I had Everytime I looked under the hood. Just need to work on the fender rubbing now....

They look pretty expensive, id rather make my own. I have someone drawing me up a schematic for my specific needs so it should be simple enough to do. If all else fails ill consider the arc. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

Aw. My post earlier didn't make it up.
I did it because the PO hacked the whole chassis harness up. You really need to get familiar with the chassis harness and figure out what you need and don't need. You'll need your time control unit if you want to retain thinks like timed defroster, intermittent wipers and such.

The only things I realistically need are the power windows headlights tail lights engine pump fan ignition etc. I dont even need the gauge cluster wires since im running a racepak which directly plugs into the ecu. Which is why I figured making my own would probably be less of a headache than trying to delete everything out of the old crusty wiring harness anyways

Yeah I figured. In that case you really just want to get all the lighting wires identified, flasher relay for signals if you needed it, the 4 or 5 fuel pump and fuel gauge wires. You probably want to directly wire up a momentary switch for starter and separate switch for ignition on.

you can still keep wipers. I have my wiper switch to turn on the high speed wiper mode versus intermittent or slow. Figured high speed should cover any amount of rain.
