View Full Version : jumpy springs on my D2 coilovers

I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem or has any insight...I imagine the same problem could happen with any coilovers, but anyways..
When I turn the wheel and the whole coilover body rotates, the spring like jumps as it turns instead of turning smoothly. At the top, instead of the top of the spring (and the rubber insulator thing on it) rotating smoothly against the upper mount (which obviously doesn't rotate when the rest of the coilover does...or is it supposed to? is this my problem?), it sticks and then jumps as it rotates, making very loud pinging noises as the wheel is turned. Both sides do it, and they've been doing it since I got the coilovers back in April. I spray the hell out of them at that spot with white lithium grease, but it doesn't do shit...any ideas?

I hope my KSports don't do this when I get them :(
There are a few people on the NICO Ksport (same as D2, but orange colors instead of blue/purple) GB thread that are having popping noises. You might wanna read through those threads (search for KSport on NICO)...

Can you do some copy-paste? I get 6 results when searching for KSport, one is AceinHole's thread, 4 are FS/WTB threads, and one is a GB thread.

my right side was doing that. we ended up taking the pillowball apart and greasing the whole thing up.
doesn't do it anymore and it works great now. i love them. done like 10 or 12 events on them so far.

How is the preload on the springs? I had the perch snug against the spring when I first installed them but they were bouncy as hell. I adjusted it it to about 1/2" gap between the spring and perch when unloaded and most of the bounciness is gone.

from what ive heard u have to keep it on a realy stiff setting

What's that have to do with it?
Anyways, mine make the popping noise, first it did it on the passenger side then that stopped, then it started on the driver side. Now it only does it every once in a while. Id' say take mess w/ preloading it, and grease it up well. Soon as I can get a garage to do mine that's what i'll be doing.

read the original post, it's not a dampening issue.

so it is a problem that part of my mount isn't rotating, and my spring is rotating against that part thats supposed to be moving with the spring, is that how I'm reading things?

When I adjusted mine I saw it like this. I had too much preload on the spring which didnt allow the shock to properly dampen and made it really bouncy. So I took off the preload which allowed the shock to compress another 1/2" and the bounciness and noise went away.

will doing this wear the shocks out quicker? the guy i bought my d2's from had it like this, and the ride felt really nice, I then preloaded the spring, and my car is now very bouncy, and my driver side is the one that now makes that spring poping sound.

Yes it probably will wear them out quicker but they were cheap in the first place. Also, I believe they are rebuildable in the US now and they did come with a one year warantee. I always have them at full stiff too.

I had the same problem with mine just a few weeks ago. All I did was tighten the strut screw on the top and that was it. The popping sound went away.
I have these weird problems ever since I got D2 coilovers... I really hate them. The front left and rear left strut makes vibrating noises when going through bumps. Seems like the pillow mount's hitting the body. Also, since the weather got colder, the rear struts are making a lot of screeching noises.
These noises are driving me insane. Could it be that I don't have bump stops and that's what's causing all these noises?

"pillow mounts hitting the body"? What does that mean? Its mounted to the shock tower. I just found out that the loud clunking I was hearing was my tie rod ball joint that was broken which gives a little play in the front left wheel.

You know that plate on top of the strut where it has the 3 bolts sticking out (sorry I don't know the correct terminology for it), I think that plate hits the body everytime I go through a bump. But that's a thought, I should have the tcc rods, tie rods, everything checked out.
