Dumb aftermarket gauge question.

Hello All,

I'm replacing some of my current electronic gauges (boost and oil pressure) since I'm having issues with them, but the manufacturer has discontinued the model so I had to switch brands.

I was using S-Gear, now I'm migrating to Revel VLS.

My car already has the wires run and sensors mounted, and my current gauges technically are still functional so I know the sensors are fine.


Can I just change out the plugs on my current sensor wires and use the old sensors with the new gauges or do I have to change both ends?

I know I'll have to rewire for power, but I'd prefer to be lazy and not have to also rewire the engine bay side and swap out the sensors.

Typically you want to use the same sensor that came with the gauge.

This. Since most gauges run off a resistance range, you want to make sure the sensor matches the gauge or else you might have seriously false readings.

Can verify, swapped out everything but the oil pressure sensor so far, new gauge and old sensor says 0 PSI at temp, so will have to pull that too.

Chances are the sensors are different. They could be the same but i would not count on it.

New sensor in, everything reading as it should. Extra fun, the old gauge was BSPT, new gauge was NPT, so that required an adapter... but on to the finished product.

I'll end up replacing the other two S-Gear gauges when they give me issues too, but they are fully functional for now.

One day I'll figure out how to fix the massive pics...

"It shows a value" != "it shows the correct value".

You have no way to know sensors scale the same way unless you run both sensor + gauge combo at the same time.

It now depends on your goal. Was it to have a working gauge, or was it to actually use the value read on the gauge ?

Both the old Sgear and the new Revel read about the same for my engine, when using the correct sensors.

I was originally hoping not have to swap sensors, run new wires, or splice the existing, but still have accurate readings, but I was not so lucky. Further, the new oil pressure sensor was NPT, but the old was BSPT, so that was fun to figure out as well.

The old gauges technically worked, but the back light no longer responded to the ignition signal so they would drain my battery.
