View Full Version : i never understood that weight balance was so important in turns

...welll i understood, but i never thought transfering weight to the front of the car could put you into a drift so easily. All today i was driving my dads automatic volvo 960 [rwd] and it was slightly damp putside, but i was taking turns pretty fast because i was suppose to pick my brother up from school and i was late as usual. so in most of the turns the rear doesnt fishtail AT ALL, because i wasnt trying to, and its a heavy ass car i guess, but then i come up to this street where RIGHT after you turn onto it it has a downward sloping hill that jets off the to right, so i take that turn exactly like the others. brake, turn in, gas, (just normal driving) and before i know it im sideways and trying to countersteer but its too late and im turned around facing the other direction with a :duh: look on my face. you guys probably could care less, ut it was a good experience that thought me that weight distribution really comes into play, :squintd:

there are better ways to learn, but that way sure works. glad there were no innocent people injured on your adventure.

heh, yes there are better ways, and yes im glad no one was on the road when it happened. What this also shows is that accidents dont only happen from people tying to drift on public roads, they also happen from pure inexperience.

you're half right. people act like jackasses on the road out of pure experience. kids get an SR20 and thing the nissan gods are gonna keep em on the road. next thing ya know a perfectly good car is fubar just to teach some punk kid what he would've learned had he given growing a chance.

sigh, i just wanna get like 10 S13's and s14's just to keep em safe in case i get other project ideas.

it is tempting to pick up a bunch of S13's, and a few S14's, keep em in a backyard, and in 20 years sell them on ebay for 40,000. ( since there will be none left )

if you think a rwd car in the rain snaps around, go drive yourself some mid engine cars. im scared to push my friends mr2 in the dry for christ sake. its practically stock beside full exhaust, so it isnt very fast in the straights but through the turns he carves it surprisingly fast and smoothly. when i drive it though im scared to push it nearly 1/2 as hard as he does since i did spin his car out once....or twice maybe......i feel the mild flamage going on here and dont really approve. have to learn your lesson somehow! his was in a volvo, mine was in a dakota pick up(and mr2) so just appreciate what you learned there son. see this is why drifting is good and more people need to go to track days. it teachs you to be out control so when you do end up out of control you can keep those backwheels where they belong, behind you.

this only has to do with the S-chassis like it has to do with all cars that get raped by inexperienced drivers. it took a complete spin in a 4000lb car on a wet street to show this individual that... weight distribution is important? wtf? i mean, yeah a lesson should be learned from this but weight distribution is really far down the list. why not start with "don't drive like a jackass and your car prolly won't spin out" or "maybe i should be more careful in the future".

take up for this CHILD all you want but when you screw up you're subject to ridicule, a service i offer gladly.

if you think that's ten times worse i'd strongly consider you staying inside your house for the rest of your life cause i'd hate to see you break into tears cause the cashier won't accept an expired coupon or... whatever.

Don't break too hard in the rain and then turn. You are shifting all ur weight in the front leaving the rear with no weight to give traction. Well for me, I don't even get any oversteer in the rain, too much understeer even at drift events. :rant2: Damn I am pissed. Well once it got dried it came out good. Must be my cheapo front tires.

this is incorrect. to make that statement true i would have had to have gone out and bought an sr20'ed 240sx and then (with no skill level in rwd cars like i have) started doing idiot shit in it. i dont think a kid who learned a lesson from spinning a volvo that he never drives is the same as some kid that bought a 250whp 240sx and then crashed it because he has no experience.

like i said, there are much better way to learn this. i didnt do it on purpsoe and think "oh man its wet outside, i think im going to go full speed into this turn and SEE WHAT HAPPENS!!!!!" i never said what happened was good, i was just saying that it taught me by default that i need to be more careful in a rwd car.

get over it.

he wasn't really bragging, and you're acting like an asshole... I call it like I see it. So what I'm 19 I've had my S14 for 3 years and I'm still learning, true most ppl my age are retards and I hate them, but I also see alot of older "enthusiasts" acting like 5 year old kids.

you're missing the point. i said you were no BETTER than them, not that you were the same. these kids think that they are the exception to the rule as well. there is no proof you can offer. the best you can do is prove me wrong by not wrecking your car.

of course you didn't think that it was going to happen. THAT'S THE POINT. being a good driver is being more cautious the worse the conditions become. take your licks and move on.

i dont really care that hes an asshole . my dads and asshole, im an asshole to some people. thats life. it happens. im just trying to tell him that hes incorrect about what hes saying. Im at a postition where all of you once were. (even the all mightly matokola or whatever his name is). Huh? I got lost in the lack of grammar and proper punctuation to remember to continue to think what you were saying mattered... I remember slightly your conceding that Makoto was an asshole (but you spelled his name wrong) and agreeing that you, too, might be yourself, while admitting no concise guilt in the situation... I guess I was once in that position myself, but instead of damn near flying off the road in the midst of normal driving situations, rain and wet roads ARE normal driving situations that we all encounter (SoCal guys exempted) and some of us actually pay for driving schools to know how to control a car that is "out of control." I did that myself in Greeneville, SC back in 2001, what about you?

maybe that isn't what you meant by:

yes i know many people like that. most of them are in my age group (17-18)

i dont think a kid who learned a lesson from spinning a volvo that he never drives is the same as some kid that bought a 250whp 240sx and then crashed it because he has no experience.

so you concede that the general rule is that most kids your age are inexperienced THUS either you meant that you are the exception OR one of the great majority in your age group that should be given
AWD 50hp autos to learn to drive on...

which is it? inquiring minds need to know...

we are talking about two different things here.

1. kids my age that are trading in whatever they have, and jumping into some high hp 240 or similar car, thinking they are the drift king, then end up fucking there shit up because they are both inexperienced and have this "im a pro driver now that im in a rwd car" attitude.

2. kids my age that are inexperienced simply because they either dont normally drive a rwd car and dont really know how to handle it, or are simply inexperienced because they havent had a whole lot of driving experience what so ever because they are (relatively) new drivers.

you say: "kids get an SR20 and thing the nissan gods are gonna keep em on the road. next thing ya know a perfectly good car is fubar just to teach some punk kid what he would've learned had he given growing a chance."

i say: "yea there are many kids like that in my age group (17-18)"

you say: "nah, i wanna protect em from kids like you."

which means you are refering to me as one of the kids that i described in "1."

all through this thread i have been explaining how i fall into the "2." category. im use to driving a fwd car. im not a pro driver. i know i cant handle an sr swapped 240 at this point, and im willing to admit it. my driving skills just wouldnt support it. im not one of the kids trying to buy one of your precious 240's with my inexperienced driving skills.

im not saying im above the rule. im saying not every 17-18 yr old male is in that category. but there are many on this site, so im sure you can find one to flame. im not him.

why cant you get this through your head. you keep saying the same thing. i am saying there are 2 types of kids my age, im not describing them again because ive already done that. im simply in the group that is the reverse of what you are classifying me in. were you born knowing how to drive a rwd car? were you born at the age of 21 and didnt go through the first few years of driving? no? didnt think so.

you need to improve on your flaming and start taking after mrmephistopheles. whenever ive seen him flame people hes usually always correct, which is what makes it hilarious. you end up just looking like an idiot.
