View Full Version : I need a muffler....

Okay, my exhaust is rusted out, and the noise pisses off my parents, so I figure now is the time to upgrade. I decided to take it to a shop and get custom 2.5" piping. I guess it's the best compromise power-wise (retain low-end torque and still gain some high-end), and I don't have any plans to go turbo anytime soon.
Problem is, I can't find a good muffler. Preferably 2.5" inlet, 3" dual tips (or so), for less than $150. The only two I've found like this were APC (...) and Matrix Racing (I don't know anything about them....aren't they just another cheapo "poser" company?). I'd like a deep sound, not too loud at normal driving, but makes a lovely rawr at WOT. How do Borlas sound? I think they have mufflers for around 115 w/out tips.
I know MagnaFlow makes a 2.25" inlet, dual 3" tips muffler that looks awesome and would sound great. But 2.25" is the stock piping, isn't it? Would custom 2.25" piping (ie straight and mandrel-bent) show any gains over stock, or gains similar to 2.5"?

Die Myth Die!!! I had a 60mm exhaust( http://www.zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?t=63555 ) and I went to a 80mm. It gained in the low end and opened up majorly on the top end. I have yet to see someone post Dyno sheets showing the loss.

Don't tell me to search, I've been searching all day all over the net.
As for the "myth", I figured that would generate some controversy. I've heard people say both. Whatever, 2.5" would still be cheaper and quieter (right?), so I'm still probably going with it.

big ass post on freshalloy dispelled that myth... maybe it's true for some engines but not for ka24de. big displacement yet such low numbers, opening up the ass allows it to breathe and it gains torque and hp across the entire graph.
if u want to save money u can just get a junkyard to slip you a stock exhaust. or you can look for someone getting rid of theirs after an upgrade. i've seen them go for free - 40 bucks.

My 80mm is much quieter and deeper in tone than the 60mm. 80mm Mufflers are bigger. Also, consider the style of muffler. N1's will be loud no matter what size they are. If you do custom build remeber to install a resonator and muffler cat back.

i've got a custom 2.5'' exhaust with some random muffler (forgot brand, looks like the 5zigen fireball one).
going to switch to 80mm GP Sports exhaust, hopefully to see gains.

got full 3inch straight through piping without a resonator, and using a basic straightthrough N1 style 3inch inlet muffler. (Think of a straight pipe from the cat back) Loud, but not annoying, and great power. Pulls very nice up top.

I JUST had my exaust done... Ran 2.5 off the cat into a 2.5 inlet 3.5 out(I think) N1 style. Got the muffler from pdm for $77! ...I absolutely love the sound, it's sooooo low.

DaveSev,
Me and my cousin are making a custom cat back exhaust with the Magna Flow exhaust. 3" inlet and 2, 2.5" outlet. We actually had to cut and reweld one of the outlet inorder to have closer outlets (aesthetic). It's costing me about $150.
$50 muffler
$45 resonator + exhaust flange
$5 (5' of 0.5") rods to make hangers
$2 sheet metal to cover moved outlet hole.
$25 for 3" U bend
$10 for 4' of 3" pipe.
+ Misc like welding rods.
I'll post pictures of our progress so far this weekend.

well i was in the same shoes as you a couple years ago, i had an apc twin tip muffler and it was annoying loud with 2.5 inch piping.got full 3inch straight through piping without a resonator, and using a basic straightthrough N1 style 3inch inlet muffler. (Think of a straight pipe from the cat back) Loud, but not annoying, and great power. Pulls very nice up top.
I now have an sr20det red top, i am running 3inch piping from the downpipe back with no cat, with an apex'i N1 cat-back. In the city, its actually quieter then my previous setup and its one of the quietest import cars in my town that is equipted with performance mufflers. On the highway, the is a nice little hummm, nothing annoying and also quieter then my previous setup. At full throttle, it screems and shoots the odd flames out between shifts!!! :coold:
