Ok I'm not new to the whole import modding scene I used to drive an integra before the head gasket started leaking oil and the abs system died on me. Anyways to the point, I'm really looking into purchasing a 240sx and i'm going to check out a 1992 240sx Coupe. Are there any notable problems I should look for when checking out this car? Any advice while taking it on a test drive? Anything at all would be a great deal of help.

Let's see...
1. Former Honda/Acura Owner?
Check!
2. Wants a 240sx?
Check!
3. Wants an SR?
dunno!
Hmm, almost...
Aw shucks, I'll be nice to you.
Go read the FAQ on 240sx.org and all the info on www.socal240sx.org, as well as all the FAQs and such on here. That'll keep you busy for awhile, and it'll get you going in the right direction.

to be honest i found this car cheap it was only 1,000 and i don't mind the flames if you think i'm into the drift scene but i'm definitly not. I can't afford to do that with my cars. I'm just looking into a daily driver (i.e. coupe cause i hate sedans and giving people rides) that is reliable and has some power. I moved from a maxima to an integra and now to a 240sx. I was just looking for some help here and if i get flamed from buying a car then this community isn't helpful at all.
And final note i'm not looking into making the car into a drifter just a reliable daily driver for the next couple of years until i can afford a brand new car. Making a car into a drift car is out of my budget and if you can't overlook that fact then i suppose you need to stop jumping down people's throats for buying a certain car for a certain aspect.

a leaky head gasket and the lack of abs made you get rid of the integra? or was there something else? I'm just curious because if thats all it took to make you get rid of it, then buying an older 240 probably isnt for you and from the way you described your budget buying the closest thing to a brand new 240 is out of the question too....

errrm wasn't the lack of abs it was the fact that the whole abs system failed. i was burning oil on top of a leaky head gasket. Replacing the whole abs system would have cost me 2 grand and the fact is i didn't want to spend the money to replace it and repair the head gasket. So i sold the car for 4 grand with all said problems because i'm going to college. I thought i wouldn't need a car but i really do due to the fact that my college is in a secluded area and i can't get to any of the supermarkets and what not.

Yeah something about a $1000 240sx and the word "reliable" in the same sentance just doesn't ring true to me. Good luck to you though. The 240 is just like any other car out there though, it's only as good as you make it. Expect to replace the Timing Chain at least. :D

oh i got it from an old couple errr you could say it was a steal. anyways yeah this is the kind of help i was looking for. Anything along the lines of common problems many owners have with their cars. That's all i'm not looking to cause trouble just get help from the community. I did search for common problems but i got more of complaints from members about noobies (ie myself) and i found it quite typical as in other forums i have browsed.

I have a '93 Coupe. Problems I have had:
*Timing Chain needed Replaced
*Just had to replace all my bearings, seals, and gaskets in the engine. (prior owners fault for never changing the oil)
*Auto Tranny has shifting problems (Soon to be replaced by a 5-speed)
*Dash Board Cracked
*Side Bolsters on seats worn out/broken
*Grounding points for Brake Lights were bad causing lights to be dim
*Needed New Alternator
*Carpet is ripped under Drivers right foot
*Numerous dents and dings throughout the body.
I paid more then a $1000 for mine, but I also bought it off a used car lot. All in All, I love my car. I do most if not all the work to it myself. I didn't buy it for reliability, or drifting, or togue. I bought it because I liked it.

yeah i was reading about the timing chain which needed to be replaced and i don't mind the cosmetic stuff like dash board and side bolsters. The new alternator seems quite normal my old maxima needed that replaced too. So i'll just look for the rough idling when starting the car and what not.

abs system fail? take it out. abs is for wussies. leaky head gasket? replace it!
an old 240sx is not going to fare much better. it's a shitbox that happens to be RWD.

burning oil and a leaky head gasket in an integra = a no no mainly because if it's leaking oil and burning oil it's fair game that it's closer to not then dead. i didn't mind the abs system failure at all. But that was just an added problem to what was already happening to my car so i sold it. i'm not going to go into more detail i was just looking for help for common problems in the 240sx that was all.

old 240sx's commonly suffer from leaky oil seals, burning coolant b/c of a failed head gasket and weak o-rings burning oil, among other things. do a search for people swapping ka24's b/c their old engine failed. c'mon dude... its a 1992, you think it's not going to have the same problems as any other 12 year old car? if you're worried about that, do a compression and leakdown test before you buy it.
