Personally, being 27 years old....I have been die hard JDM ever since I had the opportunity to be stationed overseas. I can remeber having my 88 10th anny and working my ass off to make it right using only the best parts. I sold my supra and bought my 240 to do the front clip and sr swap. It just seems wierd that all of a sudden 240 are getting all this press and info about swaps when for so long I busted my ass trying to find parts. Sorry post so long, just wondered how each of you felt.

being a l'il older, growing up on east coast, being involved with domestics & imports, i've seen more "crazes" than i care to remember! I love "custom" mods, but to build a car using very specific mods, like JDM-only parts, has always been of great interest to me. Super Street this month is full of JDM-style cars, and so many of the ads in the past few months have been leaning towards it too. but like all crazes it'll come and go. my biggest bitch is i bought my '98 240 almost a year ago when there were just a few getting noticed in the scene. now they're in every issue at least now we get LOTS more ideas, huh?

Well, to a certain extent, it's bad. "JDM" styling is basically the next biggest trend since Altezza lights, aluminum wings, city lights, and clear corners, except it's a bit more subtle. People are getting all worked up over everything that's not "JDM-style" or from Japan. Someone sports a copy of a JDM wheel on their car, some random bandwagon jumps on their case. It's even gotten a few people to stop what they're doing so they can also join the JDM bandwagon just because everyone else thinks it's "cool". With automobiles and such, they're SO into the Japanese styling, it's nuts. For example, some idiot JDM facists would buy some piece of plastic that covers up their clock just because it's from a car in Japan. I also find the word "JDM" being whored around to be really annoying. Of course, it's funny when some of these people say they dislike Japanese food, Japanese music, and anime (cartoons).
My point here. Get whatever works best. Who cares where it came from? Not everything that comes out of Japan is the greatest. It's kind of a kick to the crotch for some companies in the US who's development teams work their asses off just as hard as the Japanese when it comes to bringing quality parts and tuning to some of us for our cars only to be put down by JDM facists. Say no to ravertastic, Super Street loving/hating, wannabe drifting (into trees I hope), anti-Honda/domestic/Rota/whatever, JDM Integra cock-blocker purchasing, Spoon dickriding, Vision corner lense loving, Gaijin, JDM facists with big ass Option2 stickers on their cars. Yeah...that's true...JDM is pretty much the biggest trend next to Altezza's...
It costs a Ton...doesn't help your speed...so why bother getting it?
Like...sure some cars have to be pretty to watch too...
Like, when i get my 240...Im gonna pe putting a shitload of JDM stuff on it, from other cars.
well, it can be good or bad i guess, depending on how u look at it.
The most significant advantage to OEM JDM products is the extensive R&D that is done when creating each product. Thus, overall erformance and durability increases. Also, many aftermarket JDM products are better quality than those made elsewhere. Although, this is not always true and becomes less and less of an issue as time goes by. I have always enjoyed delving into the strange and elusive and therefore enjoy the hunt for JDM parts. However, I do not consider buying a JDM 4-1 Honda Integra Type R exhaust header a journey of any sort. All that is required is opening up an issue of Super Street and buy a "JDM package" and you get a valve cover too. Now, I consider finding a set of Speed Star Racing (SSR) wheels that have been out of production since the 80's an accomplishment. In any case, JDM can be great in some ways. I just think it's overused. I don't really thing JDM lug nuts are "cool". Sorry.

i could live w/o it. sometimes the jdm products are uglier than the usdm counterparts. take the integra. the jdm front its uglier than the usdm.

And that's pretty hard to do, lol.
I like a lot of JDM stuff because for a long time you didn't really see it in the united states. If you were importing shit then you were really hardcore, u know? Now it's easy enough to get a lot of it though and it's starting to be more common, so it doesn't really interest me as much as it did. A few things are still cool, like the wheels they sell at Jspec.com

JDM can help your speed, I saw the comment earlier that it can't, it just depends on what you are making JDM. If you mean JDM looks, then it is rather pointless, but hey, if you have the money, why not. If you are talking JDM motor SR20DET, CA18DET, etc. then IMO, it is well worth it to spend the money on. Personally, I think that it is helping the scene quite a bit. It gives everyone something else to talk about, and something to dream about, and that is what makes or breaks a scene, dreams.

what about people that create sil-80's? That's a JDM thing, and it's not pointless. If they want their car to look good, then how would it be pointless? Maybe it doesn't make you go any faster, but that's beside the point.

All I know is that thanks to the JDM hype, Eclipse and Civic ricers are driving up the price of S15 Silvia projectors on Ebay.....dammit.

hehe, yeah, that's a definate downfall.
personally, I like things that are different from the mainstream, so I guess JDM isn't going to be what i'm after anymore

Yea JDM has become a trend but the real meaning of JDM has also been twisted around and transformed once it entered the mainstream.

As far as I'm concerned, if it's good shit, I could care less where it comes from.

Amen to that!
There are a lot of US companies that have better products at better prices than anything out of Japan and I support them whenever I can. Plus, service/support is always better domestically. Examples: Ground Control, Comptech (hopefully for the 240 soon), AEM, CarboTech, etc.
Otherwise, JDM whoring is out of hand. One more white car with a black CF hood... Who decided it looked "cool" to have your car look like it had the hood wrecked and you couldn't afford to paint it? Why would you cover/remove your clock? Does 8 ounces matter THAT much?

like everybody here, JDM is great stuff to an extent. It's great to see ppl go all the way out just to get RHD stuff and other goodies. I'm trying to bring back the Gold rims japanese look back. woo hoo ghetto baby.. Can't go wrong with JDM stuff... JDM idiot wannabe freaks are another thing.

So far everyone has made some excellent points. I myself prefer some "JDM" stuff over USDM because of the extensive r&d that went into the testing that particular product....admit it some of our American born companies are cheesy when it comes time to producing a quality product. And that's not to say that some Japan companies aren't the same way...(I'm goona stop before I start contradicting myself:))..hehe
Anyways, what I'm trying to say is that if it's quality and has been proven by many other 240sx owners, then I could care less if some homeless guy constructed it out of tin cans in a dark alley...I'll buy it
.....and don't you worry, you guys will be the first ones I notify If I happen upon the afforementioned homeless guy....hahaha

Which is worse, if I took my 240sx and painted it flat black and put stock tires on the back with deep dish longchamp 15" cambered out on the front to the point where I'm riding on the edge of the rims, with an 2inch exhaust, Oh and had crazy white kanji letterings on the back window. with abunch of stickers on my rear passenger windows, or If I took my car and painted it 15 different colors so I can make people looking at my car start to swallow their own necks. with chrome *dubs* and 6inch dual exhaust with a gt wing and strobe lights like an airplane.

I got to admit something yes I maybe JDM whore.
I have a couple of JDM parts apexi N1, kg/mm cusco struts. I bought them because there were better then most of the stuff here in the US. The I did learn a lesson from this Kg/MM springs= badly dropped car! I really bought then cause there stiffer then the pro-kit. Now to get the engine te engine that goes with the springs! Man I wish there was a to get power with out having to import most of our parts from Japan.

Well Ive posted my opinion once but I wanna finalize on it by saying its bad cause it destroys originality. Any trend does. Do your own shit, whatever works better, go with it, be it USDM or JDM. You'll get more respect in the long run for doing so and who knows, your originality might become a "trend" for ricers of the future to try and pursue.
